1. Be flexible. That means sacrificing family obligations, social life outside of the company, and hobbies for your career. You should be willing and able to work any hours around the clock, and relocate anywhere at the drop of a dime to stay in this unstable industry.

2. Be willing to retrain and reinvent yourself on your own dime when the market begins to dwindle for your skillset and make sure that you aim yourself toward an area where demand exceeds the market.

3. Find at least one knowledgable mentor and learn as much as you can from them, and also build a wide network of people in your profession to help you move up the ladder or at least help you stay employed.

1. Make sure when someone tells you of a problem they are having that you listen and show them sympathy for the problem they are having. Even if you can't fix the problem right away (need to order part for example) they will not feel like there being ignored.

2. Find out ways to save the company money (in your department) that you are working for.

3. Never stop learning about new computer technology.

2. have good communication skills

3. always be on time: if you're early, you're on time, and if you're on time, you're late.

Get certified as the above posts say. They seem to not care at all about experience, but they want a piece of paper instead. I got absolutely no hits at all with 10 years exp as a freelance working on every platform imaginable, with references and positive feedback from over 40 clients and 5 small businesses. I took and passed the A+ and CCNA and immediately got offers, and working on more. so yeah get certified.
