HARTFORD, Conn. - Connecticut's Department of Correction is hiring new prison guards, despite the state's hiring freeze.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell directed the agency to begin a new class of 125 correction officers and 10 others such as counselors and food service workers, beginning Aug. 14. The class will be drawn from applicants who've already passed a screening process.

While the hiring freeze remains in effect, Rell says she must make an exception for critical public safety jobs.

More than 3,800 state employees took advantage of a retirement incentive program, including 425 corrections workers. That's more than any state agency.

The recruits will attend a 10-week course and more than 100 hours of on-the-job training at their assigned facility.

thanks again for the info... that is why I am worried, because my employers have not been contacted yet and it has been 7 weeks since my interview.

I really hope this is not the case. I think the medical evaluation is part of the job offer. Of course you have to pass it to move on to the academy.

I think it needs to be considered that there may be some candidates from the last hiring pool that may still be under consideration for the next class.
I know a CO that was hired about a year or so ago, and I'm sure they did not hire all the available candidates from the last pool.

I have also been made aware that there may be some fairly recently hired CO's that were layed off over the last several months because of the economy/budget, and I believe they may have first right of refusal on any new positions opening up now.

These thoughts are based on my communications with those currently working at DOC, and from a friend who mentioned a friend of his that was layed off from DOC just a short time ago.

Just figured I'd mention this info.
I do have to say that I have no personal knowledge if any of this is accurate, so take it for what it is.
I do not know how the state is going to make their choices.

Hopefully, we will all be pleasantly surprised when we get the call!!
Trying to stay positive.

I know a guy that's a co and it took him a year to get in!! I'm just gonna keep doing what I have to do to get bie. When they call, they call. Don't rely on a doc job. You gotta have another hussle to fall back on. Its most likely gonna be a while

well to start off with they can not hire from the last hiring processes. once they started a new process all other candidate's applications are exhausted, thats why they encourage people who have already applied 2 years ago to reply if they have not recieved a job. as far as lay offs getting first dibs that has nothing to do with us. the 125 people rell wants hired are people that have not been laid off and who are going through the process right now. and lastly there was no such lay offs. no cos were laid off. i dont mean to sound like a prick so please no one take offense to this. i am on your side and hope to meet all of you in the academy. o and by the way the state is not allowed to start a background unless they plan on hiring you at some point simply do to the lack of money. so for all the people who know their backgrounds have been started, you will eventually have a job, but who knows when. all this info is coming from a good source who has sources from DOC human resources and who was a cop for 20 yr and has been with ct doc for 14 yrs

When I got hired at that time , I rec'd a letter.
However, a friend of mine rec'd a call right before they started testing this time around, because she did the process on the last testing in 2007 and she rec'd a call asking to see if she was interested in starting a class. I know we are suppose to get letters of offers, but the way things are going and to have a class starting so soon, if they start it on Aug 14th, they probably will call just to make sure and book the slot, just to confirm...then assuming the letter comes right after. I cant confirm on that...as soon as I get more info, I will defanatly post. but yes, I rec'd a letter, but this was Dec 2000. Also I rec'd a letter 2 months prior my start date.

Pete N CT thats not true. a guy i know who is a co was called three days before the academy started and was offered a job. now i do believe that u do receive a letter because that was how my brother was offered a job. maybe the kid i no was an exception and was a last minute candidate for the academy.

Your original statement was someone you KNOW was offered a job for this academy on 8/14/09. Now you are saying it was a previous academy and the guy is already a CO.

Anyone posting on this site is concerned with 8/14/09 and getting a spot for this coming class. lets just chill out and wait for letters.

is it possible once they start the background check such as contacting former employers, that they will take you out of the pool? my concern is if they don't actually get in touch w/ a former employer and also, how far back to they check your employment record?

I know several CO's and several Police officers in the area. They all said that they are pushing that samll class through at the moment just to fill in some of the vacant positions. As far as the full blown academy is concerned they are looking to move fast. It is going to be 2 weeks at the academy and the other 8 at the facility you are assigned at. This should move things along. I have my interview on July 29. But I was told as far as the rest of us getting hired is not going to happen until this temporary budget is resolved.

john g in Milford, Connecticut said: what if you don't have w2's b/c it's been a few years since you last worked and misplaced everything?

Contact your old employer as a first resort. The employer is required to keep their records of employees and wages in case of an IRS audit and for worker's compensation claims.
ALSO You may call IRS for assistance toll free Boo B291040 if the employer is not willing or able to supply the old W-2. They will supply a copy of the tax return filed along with the W-2s .Request a free transcript from the IRS. You can request a transcript of a past tax form from the IRS for the previous ten years. This will have all the information from the W-2, but not the W-2 itself. This is usually a legitimate substitute for a W-2 for most situations.
AND You may also Contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) or Labor department.

per the application: "LIST ALL EMPLOYMENT YOU HAVE
HELD DURING THE LAST 10 YEARS" and in the past they have contacted all of the jobs I had in the last 10 years.
