I'm a CO now with the state. I just finished the academy 2 months ago. The job itself is easy. When it come to the OT, right now they are having academies back to back to get rid of the OT. I'm single so the pay is not too bad. I couldn't raise a family with my pay tho. They take taxes plus your retirement each check. I work in Ely so the prison is pretty safe here. A lot of people that are working here are trying to transfer to High Desert or Southern Desert as soon as their one year probation is up. Or transfer to another LE agency. I would not move states for this job. |

Actually it's not bad. They have a Ridley's(which is a grocery store like Alberton's), they have a anytime fitness, and your basic needs. If you want Walmart then you would have to drive to vegas or Elko. They have bars and they have 3 casinos i believe. They have schools. They also have a hospital. People around here go hiking, hunting, go to the lake, etc. They have alot of community events. I come back to vegas tho on my days off. |

Also, if you don't mind me asking, what is your actual income after everything with being single? Sorry for all the questions, just really making sure this is what I want to do or try elsewhere. |

Hey all. Been reading through all the comments. I just submtted my application online yesterday. I am going to Tonopah or LV only. My buddy just finished his second or third week after graduation from the academy. He picked and got seleted for Tonopah along with another guy from Calfornia, which they did not know each other prior to the academy, but he was also from our area. Which is strange. I am going to try to get Tonopah as well, and live in Las Vegas with them. If and when I get a recruiter, I am going to try to see if I can go in as a C/O, not a CO/T. I was a state corrections officer in Indiana, so already have the 120 hour pre-service academy, as well as I was a police officer in Arkansas. I am 28, and need to get back into a good job, and hopefully get back into a police department again. |

Hey Guys, My husband just finished the CO test last week in Indian Springs. He said that there were a total of 28 people to test. Only 8 people passed the physical! After the physical, he did the psych test etc. Then, he had a panel interview which was very easy. All 8 of the people that passed the physical passed the interview as well . They gave him the directions for a drug test and a PHQ (Personal History Questionnaire) . Bill, the guy in charge said that academies are going from AUgust- December so the first ones to turn the PHQ in are the first ones to enter the academy. Good Luck! |

So mainly Indian Springs Prison is a waste of time? See the only reason why I was deciding to change from security to co was, because I am currently part time and was told by my job I am looking at a two or three year wait on getting full time. I am 27 have no 401 k plan, no benefits for myself or my wife, and no pension plan, so when I saw the state claiming they have full time, pension, benefits, I thought about my family. Also not to mention if anyone here also knows about the Arizona Department Of Corrections. I went through them and they only offered 32,000 a year which isn't anything, plus the cost of living out there compared to Vegas is almost the same, well depending on where you live. I passed everything with AZ, but decided to try NVDOC. I feel like many of you seeking a better life and not sure a better direction. I am not sure who anyone spoke to at HR, but mine has been Bill Sorom, he explained allot, so far, but again 20 years you put in and you can retire from what I am told. I spoke with a lady who works for the Prison and she told me she was retiring soon and she explained that it can be tough, but well worth the career field. Not sure what any of you all think I would love to hear back your opinions. |

Look, as a COT i make around 1500 gross every 2 weeks. With taxes and retirement taken out(which you dont have an option) I take home 963 a month. The thing is if you apply in Ely, know that you wont be getting a transfer down south anytime soon. There not transfering anyone right now even if you pass your 1 year probation. If you quit before hitting your probation then you wont ever be eligible to apply for NDOC. Thats what Ive been told. If you make that much I would suggest just sticking it out until something opens up in Vegas. I didnt have a job after graduating from college so I went with this until something better comes up.I'm single so it works for me. Plus ely is only 3.5 hrs away so i come back on my days off. I work 12 hr shifts so i get 3 days off one week and 4 the second. Wish you luck! |

Oh yeah plus even if its a maximum security prison, Ely State Prison is the safest in the state since everyone is locked down 23 hrs a day. We havent fired a gun in months. We get inmates from High Desert or Southern Desert all the time that assault staff since its open yard. |

I originally applied for Indian Springs I am still given the option to go for Ely. My main concern was pay wise how much a month an officer takes home. Cause just like you I have bills to. Damn $963.00 a month... That's nothing. Why is it the HR people saying that I would take home at least $2,000 minimum a month? I really appreciate your info. As for sticking with my current job. I kinda have no choice until something better comes along, because this is the only way I pay for my bills. The only reason I decided to make a different decision in changing jobs is, because my job they have me at 3 days a week at times or four max and 7 hour days, I know it is a job, but being broke every month and having no ebenfit at all blowz. That's why AZDOC and NVDOC seemed better to me due to retirement plans and benefits. |

Look bro, we don’t get paid $963 a month. We get paid more than that. Don’t let negative comments stray you away from a good job. Yeah the job is not that hard, but we are the part of law enforcement that goes without being recognized. Things are getting better and it will get better. It’s best to join now while things are ok than try to join when it will become harder. Thankfully my wife & I are working so we are making it just fine. It’s a State Job and there are benefits, and to me being a Peace Officer means more than the money. If you want to be in law enforcement this is the stepping stone. Trust me I read about all the negative stuff but I still joined the force and I haven’t regretted it. Integrity & pride starts within you. Just remember that this job is not for everyone…you are surrounded by the scum of Nevada. We are in danger every single day that we are out in that yard. It takes balls to do this job. Good Luck bro. |

Hey Roob I definitely appreciate your feed back, I know one thing is for sure I noticed a ton of negative comments not just from this site, but many others. I honestly want this career not just for the money, but I have always wanted to stay busy and put my size to good use instead of being some security guard. I know am not thinking negatively at all even with the harsh comments some leave, I have allot to give to the company or prison. I have been told by many of my fellow officers I should be working there at the Prison, because I am not here to make myself seem all high and mighty and perfect I am far from it, but I stick my kneck out for many supervisors and fellow officers at my job for low pay. I thank you and repect you for speaking your own mind as well and informing me, it is hard to find. Maybe if everything goes well you will see me up there at the Indian Springs Prison. |

I TAKE PRIDE IN WHAT I DO. I wear my uniform with pride. You will meet a lot of angry C/O’s and for good reason with all the state pay cuts and low morale, but like I said…Pride and Integrity start within you. Ask yourself…For all the C/O’s that complain…why don’t they leave if it’s that bad? Exactly! If offered the job…take it. It’s a learning experience, it’s a Government job, and a stepping stone in law enforcement. Good luck. |

The job isn't for everyone and neither is the pay.

Either way guys, I appreciate all your information whether it is unintentional for negativity or positive influencing, either way I need better pay and I see it at the Prison and not in security, because reading what Ace stated up above is clear, but I will also when given the chance speak with the interviewers about the true take home pay and benefits. I ask questions, because it seems like Nevada pays more than Arizona, so that is why I sought the state out here more. I also couldn't agree more with the statement that not everyone is cut out for it, because it is top notch scum bags inside all day everyday nothing changes. I know coming from a Hotel guest services background won't be squate once inside the Prison lol. |

The negative comments on here are reality. You will see under $1000 after you get benefits for you and your wife. It will be about $250 a month. I got out a while ago to take a job back east. Things will not be getting better for NDOC. A state taking 20% of your pay towards retirement means the state is broke and now all state employees are going to fund the pensions. Keep in mind that if they start giving raises again the state takes more money. A friend of mine is still at HDSP and there is no over time. If I were you I would go to Arizona. You'll probably take home the same money but won't pay as much for benefits. It's also 25 years to retire not 20. Don't go by the salary on webpage or go by what HR tells you. It's there job to hire people. |
|
DevilDog in Las Vegas, Nevada 11 months ago |
Well honestly it sounds jacked up really and not worth any effort, but working right now part time and not having any benefits for myself or my wife or a 401k plan or a pension plan makes me see HDSP or NDOC as a opportunity and a foot in the door to work there and maybe one day apply to another Prison like CCA or some other department either here in Vegas or else where. As for Arizona, $32,000 per year seems almost the same as out here, except they only have, so many areas to apply for and not to be negative since I have not worked out there at all, I cannot imagine being paid that much and trying to survive, because they too are also not getting any OT. I guess I am stuck in a rock in a hard place. Seems like every Department has a HR say in things, I mean they are all trying to hire good or decent people to fill the messed up gaps, but OT or not they all claim a Prison is like a miniture city and the careers are endless, but it seems like everyone I run into thinks other wise. All I can say is half of the people that state how bad things are should work less than 30 hours a week living pay check to pay check and not having any benefits or future benefits due to the company laying people off or at a freeze until further notice. I was personally told as much as I am a motivated guy and someone who does a great job still has to wait on a list for full time and that can take 2 or 3 years. Why in anyones right mind would I or anyonr wanna wait for that long for full time when someone like this prison is offering it. Anyone who works at this Prison and is complaining why are they still there then if it is that bad? They should just leave like many have stated before. Not being a prick or anything or disrespecting anyone, but the truth lies within those walls that people keep saying it is that bad then leave... |

For the people for southern nevada, they don't really care that you wear pt clothes for the interview because they know what your doing, but its up to you.no offense to anyone but the ones that fail the pt portion is mostly older people, very unfit, and overweight, but it is fairly simple.now the testing is done in one day then you get your phq. You have to take that home and fill out out and h get it back to him asap. Its not to bad.make sure you have no criminal record and you bring your drivers license. No ids. Someone actually went in there with a warrant. Lol, that is the only reason I said something. And you will be done right there if you do not bring a drivers license as well. |

Just wondering, because I was informed that every Academy is different as far as what they do for the trainees? Sounds like a fun time already, I am not to worried about the physical portion, because I tend to do try to stay fit as possible, but either way if one of the class mates falls behind I fall with them and push em on lol, not sure if they care about that, when I worked out with the Marines the motto was never leave a fallen behind or stragglers. I never served, but accepted that motto, sounds dumb, but I have others backs regardless of the out comes. Overall sounds like a good time ahead. |

Kinda off topic here for everyone who is going tomorrow and in the future to the tests for the Prisons, I wish each of you the best of luck and hope you all make in as much as I hope I can get the chance as well. Just a reminder to those who need to realize this, always read the info any lawenforcement gives, because running in certain amount of time has been always a priority, so if anyone else is there tomorrow and falls behind I will finish my run and run back to fetch you and move you. Best of luck! |
