In my opinion the three top skills for a customer service manager are:

1. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

2. Ability to coach, train and motivate team members.

3. Provide fair and open feedback.

These skills can be developed by reading magazines/books on the subject and following authors who study the subject of successful management techniques.

Job specification of Customer service manager

1. Two to five years customer service supervision and/or management experience.

2. Minimum five years of insurance experience in the personal lines industry.

3. Post Secondary education or equivalent insurance industry work experience.

4. Holds appropriate licensing.

5. Ability to manage complex operations, processes and multiple assignments.

6. Ability to manage staff in a people focused manner.

7. Strong analytical and problem solving skills and the ability to successfully interact with staff and internal partners to problem solve to achieve goals.

8. Excellent communication, organizational, motivating and planning skills.

9. Ability to provide outstanding customer service.

10. Ability to develop and train work force, build relationships, utilize skills of workforce most appropriately.

11. Ability to manage front end operations effectively.

12. Ability to process information/merchandise through computer system and register system.

13. Ability to maintain a fair, consistent set of standards as they apply to work force.

14. Ability to adjust priorities and manage time wisely in a fast-paced environment.

15. Ability to maintain records and documentation pertaining to work force.
