Wow, what a coinkidink dentalGURU2009, me too! It's complex, involving multiple personalities and my desire to be treated like a human being on par with other "team" members. It actually has started to resemble a chapter from "Lord of the Flies"..but I think it started when members of the team simply decided not to view my errors with the same charity as those mishaps/oversights/errors of their own making.

There are plenty of indicators the doctor discusses the doctor's own thoughts and feelings about me with 2-3 other team members and is deliberately leaving me out of the loop, except to ask another employee to admonish me for real or imagined/manufactured errors. That certainly seems counter productive and I am preparing for an exit in due time....looking for a team that understands how to circle the proverbial wagons.

I hope you've found a better situation.

for a specialists after years of being there I believe you can make
up to $30 an hour. I however made $22 an hour. That was not bad
for no schooling. You don't need school to be a dental assistant. However I did not start off making that it increased as the years
went on. So, as someone said it depends on the practice, the area, and if it's a general dentist or a specialist, also length of time on the job (or years of experience) which determines your pay!

wow your lucky for working in a dental assistant position, I went to school for dental assistant i finished in 2008, i went for 6 months i feel like i wasted my time, I am still having some problems finding jobs as a dental assistant, these jobs only want an experience dental assistant, where can i find a dental office where you dont have to need experienced as dental assistant.

Neophyte, that's hysterical about The Lord of the Flies analogy. I can totally relate to that office experience. Now I'm out of dental, of course I'll temp here and there for some extra cash but I love the freedom of not having to feel stuck or at the mercy of some unsavory dental beeotches. I've taken a very different turn and work at a pizza place it's fun. I'm just trying to enjoy myself. Its a much different atmosphere!I've learned how to toss dough, I love it!

Dental Assistants are just dental slaves. I've been one for 28 miserable years and it is the most unappreciated, demanding, degrading jobs. If you like being talked down to, work with a bunch of gossiping hens who try to kiss the bosses behind, arrogant rude dentists who are always right, who talk over you, yell, scream in front of patients, never give you a raise, ask you to clean toilets in between patients, 1I can go on and on, become a dental Assistant. Notice "ass" is the first syllable. And Dr's we all do it for one reason, MONEY. we take all that shizz because we NEED money, hello. Don't you think we'd like to make 35 to 40 dollars like a hygienist. And no you can't go back to hygiene school if you have a house and car and kids at home to support, so your stuck, and they know it. I always thought women were in a sisterhood till I worked with a bunch of them. I'd rather work with a bunch of guys in a gas station anyday.

OMG! There should be a sisterhood but girls are so judgmental, insecure and fickle. I love working with guys, as crude and in your face as they can be. Granted, not all girls are ruthless and cruel but it seems that too much estrogen leads to unnecessary drama :) esp. If the dentist is a woman herself.

Sister in Ashland & Fairly Claire... Amen sisters! I agree, and I am no newbie. I've had very kind Drs, and also egotistical ones. The last one expected me to shack up with him! Yeah right. The woman in offices are almost worse to deal with than men you have to beat off with a stick. I couldn't take it anymore. There are better things in life. It's just sad when it's you true passion but can't deal with the [evil] people.

You guys hearing what's goin on in the world? I want to know, from one dental assistant to the next, or one human being to the next, is it crazy out there or what? We should stick together at least unify ion some way. Let's make a positive dental assistant sisterhood website of some sort, you know bring it all together! Help each other out. Give advice don't preach. Be thoughtful and patient. Any takers?

I worked for this dentist for an years. She recently fired me and told me not to put her down as a reference because she doesn't have anything nice to say about me. I regrets so much for chose to be Dental Assistant as my career. You get nothing out of it except dealing with mean and nasty dentist who yell and scream at you in front of the patient. Who made you worse about yourself. Who made your life as a living hell when worked for her. I wish i could have done some research before i chose this career. I REGRETS IT SO MUCH!!!! IF I COULD GO BACK,I WOUDN'T CHOSE THIS CAREER.

Fairly Claire, Dentalguru and all my other sisters, we need to unite. Just to have a safe place to land when you feel like you can't take anymore. When you leave work feeling like such a loser. My boss is a WOMAN, and menopausal! We both are, but all I can do is take her shizz and like it because I have a mortgage, car, son, (no husband or child support!) she belittles me every chance she gets. 1I look every day at jobs, but their scarce, and I feel I'm being discriminated against because of my age. Doctor's want some young 20 yr. old, not someone in their 50's. But I have soooo much experience, patience and love for my patients. show me some 20 year old that knits blankets for the cancer patients, and sends cards to the elderly and forgotten souls, and misbegotten. This is all I've done my whole life, serving dentists. she has me doing all her work, including restoring, polishing, and fabricating cerec crowns! when she takes a vacation , 5 last year, I get laid off while the rest of the entire office come in and get paid. I'm selling all my jewelry and collectables on ebay just to survive. she knows I have no husband, parents, or family and I just lost my daughter. I'm at wits end. God Bless you soul sisters....yours in the fight.

O and cedall in ontario, I have scoliosis from being bent to the left for 28 yrs, cateracts in both eyes from staring at UV lights, while holding the orange paddle so boss wOn't hurt her eyes, and vertigo and deafness from the loud pitch of hand pieces, but I still go on, because I have to. I feel for you 'Sister' . The orange shield comment made me chuckle because I know all too well
how THAT goes! I wish that these girls going into the field knew it's all an absurd joke many times.
Dentistry is awesome. Dentists are not. The last dds was the worst behaved HUMAN that I had ever met in my entire life. Not kidding here. He was evil, selfish, sick and twisted. I locked my doors on my days off because I couldn't be sure he'd come to my home.

Wow! No wonder I have a hard time finding a dentist I like! If I find a dentist I can tolerate, it seems like his office staff are jerks! And when I find a dentist I can't stand, his office staff are usually pretty nice. I've gone through several dentists in my area trying to find one that is nice and has a nice office staff. The last dentist that I went to and actually liked, his wife ran the office and was total b****.

One time on a working interview several yrs back , the doctor called to me while I was polishing a pt. I quickly replied. "Coming in a second, Doctor." I went to him and he was very unhappy. He was angry that I didn't say "Coming now Doctor" . I was given the riot act and he took much time to explain to me why I should say -Coming now, even if it would still take the 15 seconds to walk over to him.
He proceeded to tell me his whole life story. How he was an ex-alcoholic, he can't wait until Obama is elected , and how he has published articles on specialized "fringe" dentistry.
I knew right then that this job would be like a prison sentence. I simple replied
"I'm not voting for Obama , doctor!"

Never heard from him again - THANK GOD!

The very first dentist I worked for as a teen told me I used too much toilet paper. He didn't understand why woman had to use tp every time they used the restroom.
He also was a packrat, like a "hoarder" and he kept and reused disposable supplies and reused them. Such as prophy cups.
He also refused to pay for hazardous waste and he took the used needles put them in a coffee can , poured stone into it and threw it in the dumpster out back. He also had sex with his childrens babysitter.

OMG whoa….that is horrible.. I thought I knew stingy dentist…yall have some worst out there. I have not had it that bad.

I understand the packrat type too,, Back in the day, when I was working for this one dentist, I would squeeze out to much bonding, he would literally have a heart attack. Every time it happen you will get a ten minute speech on how to squeeze the bonding and primer, and them how to suck it back up if too much was poured.
He was super anal about that, and all while in front of the patient.
After a while, all I did was rub or dab the micro brush, just enough to see something shiny on the tip, yes, its to the extreme, but hey we have to make sure were not wasting :)

Im sure many of dentist are going to be cutting out hazard waste too… or will dispense of them in different way which are more convenient to them. I actually collect the lead sheet, from the x-ray film, because most would throw that away in the trash , put I decided to collect them and bring them home, but Im thinking you can recycle that and get money. I have a stash and it weights pretty heavy, I have to goggle that. Maybe you can collect that for him. And make the small profit

It sounds like you worked there for a while ?

Before, I used to work for ANY dental office and I know lots of things about them as well from personal to professional stuff but I wouldn’t share that out in public, but you will be shocked what you see in a dental office, behind the doors. Im way more selective of who I work with now…

If we were to give dentist a personality characteristic its stingy and horny, okay im kidding, but the majority are lol

what do you broads say ?

This doc I worked for many many yrs ago. He has passed away now. He was cheap, unorganized , an adulterer who went thru a nastly divorce after having an affair with the babysitter. His wife phoned me some yrs after to tell me she needed my help in court for the divorce/child custody but I declined.
I felt bad for her. She was so nice . But I told her if I did- he is just crazy enough to come after me. He for sure had a psycho streak.
He was reprimanded by the dental board for rx drugs and custody pymnts. He died broke, unhappy and from side effects from drugs.
The scary thing is ....this dds wasn't the weirdest one I've worked for. Oh no, It can get worse....
One dr stalked me at home and tried to ruin my marriage . He felt we were meant for each other. In his sick twisted dreams!!

Fairly Claire Oh My ! my reply did not post... It must of not liked what I said, or i dont now what happen. I hit reply oh well here it goes. Ill clean it up this time :)

I was saying that, most temps, make a % of your paycheck, have a screening process/interview and obviously you tap into their network of dentist.

were all capable of the same. surprising there's actually lots of opportunity within dentistry. you just have to be open minded.

I have wrkd in different dental offices and i have always left in good terms. they have nothing on me and thats why they call me to fill in for help. Im not sure how many other assistants can say that, but I think it would be important to have that as a temp assistnat. And we all know their are always seems to be someone taking off, who is sick, cant came in. and thats were you feel in. I dont like assisting so much, i rather work by myself on polish, temps etc. think about it you grow your network you pick and choose who you want to work with. I prefer woman dentist, I understand their pickyness, and im more comfortable. boys are dirty. I cant stand their arrogance, and their dehumanization techniques. Once I had a dentist tell me you cant even suction,, I did not leave that office till I shut him up. thats what you have to do, You shut them up and then you leave. Now the hole point is for them to like you and refer you. I very selective duh...and i can do that becuase i have that flexibility were as otherss donet, i feel bad for other assistants. I cn just tell you since Ive been temp'ingonly they treat you so much more better and are more appreciative of you. today, I went in to help in a office and the girl im

Some of my good friends are hygienists I have worked with in the past. It's great working with them and lots of fun too. There were only two hyg. that I felt were "sharks" , both ( seperate offices)hooked up w the boss/dds and eventually married them . All parties were presently married and became divorced. I didnt like thier manipulating behavior and I wanted no part in it. Both offices had a "mass exodus" , if you will, me included.

All the hygienists I worked with were awesome! So were most of the docs though, so I really can't complain. I do know how some can be though. I was an office manager, but never had to work close to the docs like the assistants, therefore, never had to experience the belittling that I've heard them express. Hygienists were much nicer though and much more willing to teach what they knew.

That's hilarious! I thought I worked for a frugal dentist, but he only tracked dental supplies... I've never heard of a dentist so stingy wanting to save a penny on toilet paper. I wonder how people so educated can be so ignorant at the same time. That's disgusting to reuse anything too.

He probably had bulging, expired 'non-perishable' cans in his home pantry if he's a hoarder. Thank 'God' for OHSA... Wondering if he took his sitter on a date to MC Donalds, where she ordered off the kid's menu.. Gross! So sorry you went through that!

Kathy in Orlando, Florida said: It's sad. We had courses " Medical errors and how to avoid them". The lawyer who gave a lecture said that everybody sued if dental error happened, not only dentists and hygienists...all the office is sued. However, DAs and front people don't have special insurance, that to protect themselves. So, I think if a dentist blames on assistant in front of the patient it's unfair totally. What about teamwork in this case? He just sets up DAs and puts them in troubles. You would say "Who is going to sue DA? She has nothing", but remember, the World consist of crazy people. Someone, a crazy patient doesn't care and sue everybody, and what assistants do???

assistants really get sued? i have been trying to do some research, because the other asst & myself noticed the jack@ss we work for has been walking out procedures he doesn't do, the hygienists are not happy because he leaves the building while they have a pt in the chair (illegal in jersey), & some staff members have been mumbling about reporting him. i'm concerned about what would happen to me if he gets investigated for anything. i am looking for another job, i will take pretty much anything right now, i don't want to be around when it falls apart. unlike some of the others posting, i do love my job, i assist & work at the front desk, & i love my pts. but the dr & especially our office mgr (who happens to be his wife) are becoming impossible to deal with. any suggestions on how to learn what i need to do to protect myself?

I followed her advice and I finished the assisting program last year. I didn't know how much more money hygienists make until I started working. In school we were lead to think that the assistant position wasn't below the hygienist. It was just different. No one ever told me that the hygienist is paid much more and that the assistant has to assist them too. And they have only gone to school one year more than I have!!! Why didn't my advisor tell me to go for hyg.?? Dental assisting is a joke, one of the assistants here is a joke, no education or experience, all of her x rays must be retaken, etc. Now I am supporting myself and can't go back to school. Ugh please will someone go back in time and tell me to apply to hygiene school! I love the dental field but the dental assistant is a ridiculous position. Why make people go to school for it if you can just hire someone off the street and show them how to do it in a few weeks?

THE SCHOOL DID NOT EXPLAIN THESE JOBS VERY WELL

Jocelin Aparicio-Really???? Wow Im kinda getting scared working as a Dental Asst now haha, Im bearly studying for it I'll be certified as Dental Asst. by May of this year 2011... by the way soo u didnt knew that hygienists made more money?? Cuz thats obiouvs to know

Cheap, CHEAP? My boss is soooo cheap she shuts the lights off and heat when she leaves to go to lunch, so you just sit in the dark!! And yes in the summer she constantly shuts the air off too. We use little used plastic grocery store bags for trash, and reuse a lot of the disposables. Forget a raise. Your not getting one. If a pt. cancels she makes you clean toilets, windows, grass, I could go on and on.

I'm so glad that a lot of you have spoken out about the reality of being a dental assistant. I clearly can't stress that these trade school ads won't even tell you what to expect as a dental assistant. I can't believe that in these trade schools, one person goes from a "dead-end" job to a "career that I love" without knowing the reality of what to expect.

Oh by the way, one Sanford Brown commercial starts out by asking "Why did I choose dental assisting?" And the answers were: "Because I wanted a better life", "Because I wanted to help people", and "Because I just love to see people smile." What a bunch of crock!

I know myself that I could never do that type of work. I don't want to look inside peoples' mouths at blood and guts, and have to deal with sickness and disease all day long. Oh and let's not forget, a dental assistant has to deal with crying children as well. So if you don't have patience with kids, like I do, then being a dental assistant is simply not for you.

For those of you who have worked in the field and you all had bad experiences, I hope that you can find something better real soon. I am so sorry for what you've had to go through.

the marketing aspect from schools, does make it look superb :)

this field would be so MUCH better if woman would be more supportive and coach-able with each other, instead of riding each others back, acting conceited and competitive with each other.

women are more animal then divine lol

Kyle, I don't know about hygiene schools in your area but it is four years training here in California. The RDA programs are two years long. You can shorten the time by 6 months if you go to a private school. With all this said, if there are Hygiene positions available in your area then pursuing a Hygiene degree would be worth it. I have been unemployed for almost two years. There are just not any RDH positions in my area. I, being a Veteran, have just applied to the Army and the Navy Departments to be considered for hiring as a Civil Service Hygienist. There are also RDA positions currently available across the US with the Department of the Army. I am not sure whether you need to be a Vet in order to apply. You would be better utilized and respected for your training as a RDA in the Civilian Dental Corps. They don't accept someone without the proper training. Check out: www.civilianmedicaljobs.com for current RDA positions and requirements. Good luck!

I stand corrected. The one that asks "Why did I choose dental assisting?" was for All State Career School. They have a campus in Tinicum Township, Delaware County; just a few minutes south of the Philadelphia airport.

dentalGURU2009 in Genoa City, Wisconsin said: The very first dentist I worked for as a teen told me I used too much toilet paper.
When we had down time. He wanted me to drive him across town to buy cigarettes instead of buying them at the corner to save a nickel!

really crazy indiviual, huh?
what's sad is the nickel he saved in buying cigs across town probably cost you several times that in gas money! and reusing cups and not paying for hazardous waste? shame on him!
