Ok, this has totally crossed the line. You asked him...that means YOU crossed the line, then posted his response on the internet, and making fun of him by saying that you are not interested. What is it you are up too? Stroking your own ego? Playing with his emotions?

Professionalism has to work both ways. One can not complain about a dentist in this sort of situation.

So wha is it that you are doing? Is he a Boss, potential boyfriend, or toy?

I have only been a dental assistant for about 3 years and I just don't understand how we all are putting up with same crap treatment all the time. When I started I planned on attending assisting school, but wanted to work in an office part time. I was told my my first employer not to go to school and that she would train me instead. I thought "what a great person", she's going to save me so much money. After putting up with a year of being treated like a slave, enduring endless emotional abuse, performing all functions of a CDA/RDA illegally(I wasn't aware of this fact until I started to attend classes to get my dental radiology license), did front office work, and all the while I was only paid $10 an hour. This women terrorized me and I stayed like an abused wife until I started to talk to other assistants and finally got up the nerve to quit her filthy office. I did get my license and was #1 in my class. Is there a union for us? I've been looking, but nothing really comes up. We need start fighting for our rights to fair treatment, benefits, raises, and increasing our base pay. This has got to stop. We all know how demanding this job is emotionally and physically, yet we continue to do it for the patients and love of the field. At the same time, we are still skilled professionals that deserve respect and should be paid and treated accordingly. We have bills and lives to lead too.

I have been assisting for a little over a year and a half now. Tell me this, can they make you work 99 hours in a two week pay period and NOT pay you overtime? We do not get any benefits, no pay time off, sick days, etc. We have to scramble to try and go to the doctor when we are sick, not to mention WORK BECAUSE WE HAVE NO COVER. There is only two of us, and we do front and back. We also do plumbing. And tech support, and personal assistant things, such as booking hotels or printing out maps for the dentist for personal trips. We get one incentive, if we make a certain percentage on production, we get a small bonus on our second check of the month. But me and the other girl drive a total of 74 miles each day to go to the clinic, so to me I feel that "bonus" just pays for gas. I make 11.50 an hour. 99 hours people! No lunch break! I have to stay clocked in to answer the phone! and she paid me regular pay! for all that work! Is this even legal? Im so paranoid, I didn't even want my city, state posted for fear of retribution. I am sick, had to go get on blood pressure meds because it just finally snapped like I feel im gonna do, problem is, not alot of jobs around a tiny town like this. Oh, did I mention we have to clean the office too? Including scrubbing bathrooms. I even handle big time items like PPO networks and negotiating the contracts, that she is supposed to do because it is her clinic. 11.50 an HOUR!!!!!!! Advice? There is so much more but I am disgusted

Dear unhappy in Marfa TX, I think ur boss us mire than a jerk and slaver....it is against the law not to pay over time after 8 hours if work and not ti give the employee break times and if anything they have to pay untaken break times at your regular hourly rate, meaning that wevhave the right to take 10 min break in thr middle of every 4 hours working shift, lets say we work mondar 9-1 then one hour lunch and then 2-6 second shift, then in rhe middle of each period we have the right to fet 10 nib break but if cus of work we r top busy and we r not able to take those lil breaka then des should pay us for one hour of our time or if on a specific day we work lets say saturday from 9-3 in a row then after 5 hours working straight we havevrhe right to have 30 min break byt if notnpossible same thing...... After 8 hours of work the HAVE TO PAY OVER TIME NO MATTER WHAT!!!! It's the law!!! I know how stingy DDS r, some if them dont want to pay iver time but they feel since they r the boss they can demand u to anything they want because you pay for your time, I hate that....And also I think u r being underpaid ir maybe un RX is different wage cus in CA wages go 12-18 but must cimon like 14 which is not good enough sice they demand u to do as much as you can do, if u show u r capable to do temporary crown they will demand though is a RDA dutie but ad long as u show ur best they will try to explote you and I said "try" cus it's in your hands to do it or not to do it i mean that of course uf they ask u dont feel like u can say no but they can not force you....if you calll the labor department u will find out better and once u r tired of rhe situation and want ro throw rhe towel u can sue? (sorry dont know rhe right wat to say it) for unpaid overtime.....Im telling you they r soooo stingy but ur bodas is a crap cus she has only 2 people that according to what u said she would be happpy if you would rub her back as a personal massager as well.....it's really hard!!

Dont't you think that part of the dr's plan?? Treat you bad, make you feel inadequete and not have to promote you/give you decent review or raise? It's SO typical!!
I wish I had a nickel for every a zzhole doc out there that pulls that on assistants, please... Geniuses I tell you.

Actually they are so stingy that in my last job the boss made us sign this handbook in which he specified that he would do any kind of personal review anytime if concidered it was necessary (when we make mistakes for sure) but that it wouldn't be followed by any raise, gosh I was so irritated and I asked him about the raises and guess what a**hole said? " In 5 years you won't be any better" it's so stupid cus of course you do better w time specially when u dont have much experience in something like in that office we used to do Implants, Ortho, veneers etc.... And even worst me I did have some experience on those at that time but the other assistants no and guess what?, he was always asking me to assist w those cus he didn't want to spend more time or to have hard times if they made a mistake so in the end would they get better or not?, in the beginning I didn't know to take impressions for invisalign but after trying me out I did it good and then he demandes me to do it when he was busy.......Right now I dont work there anymore and Im looking for a Job it's been a week w no luck but I will b ok later, in the other hand I was already annoyed of working w him in the last months cus besides he was always talking on my back w my best friend at work like he was satisfied the way I work but didn't like my attitude, how can u work happy when u r All stressed w a very busy schedule and besides he seems to depend on u All the time??!!!! I was really pissed w his behavior, he didn't seem to be man or an employer in any way cus he should set a good sample but he was constantly critizising the patients w us during lunch time too, nasty!

I went to work with a well known dentist in his area. At first, I was in Aww of him and his skill. As time passed, he wanted to share some of his more personal skills, i.e in the bedroom. Though he was married, he would spin his web of lies about his unfeeling wife. He had the nerve to tell me he thought she was gay. Little did I know, I was only one of his many staff members to be graced by his attention. When I went to end it, my job services after 4 years were no longer needed. Given his rep, with his letter of recommendation I was told I could work anywhere. His underlining threat was, if I made waves or caused a scandal than it would reflect poorly on me. I never said a word and left with grace. Sure enough, I had 4 dentist wanting to hire me. I went to work for a female dentist who let me know daily how much she appreciated me...With money, not sex.

WOW! and i thought the dr i worked for was an ass for falsely accusing me of things and getting fired over it! i went to school for general dental assisting and got my first job as a orthodontic assistant with no prior experience in that field. i thought he was super nice and easy to get along with in the interview we talked forever. then 3months later he fired me saying i wasnt at the level where he thought i should be and said i was messing all kinds of stuff up and wasnt learning from my mistakes! yet he never once told me or pulled me aside saying i did anything wrong! really???? and when i asked what it was that i was doing so wrong and what i could do better his answer was you cant do anything better! make sense to you?? and said he told me all this stuff about bing on a 3month trial basis...if i woulda known about that why would i have been so SHOCKED to be getting "let go" after months for busting my ass catching on to things i didnt learn in school so fast and doing them good cuz i was never told otherwise til the day i was fired! have the "balls" to let me know when and if i was messing up to begin with and dont make up reasons to fire me! still seeking a good honest helpful dr hopefully out there somewhere!

Sorry that you had such a terrible experience with that dentist. I'm glad to hear that you are making a move to another career, that will be more rewarding to you. I've been an assistant for 26 years. I stared out as a voluteer in Germany for 1 year and when a opening came up,i got the job. This was a GS position with the army. I learned a lot from my first doc. When I got back I worked for a female doc and she was the worst! She fired me within a year. My next job was with a fairly decent doc. However I became the go to girl. I stayed with him for 15 years. I was his scape goat. I had to move on to get health insurance. Worked at an air force base for 3 years and worked with 3 great docs. My last doc there thanked me because I made him like dentistry again. Now I'm back working for the army again and doing what I love ( pros) giving back to the soldiers that defend our nation. I'd tell students that did clinicals at our office, this job has to be in your heart. Best of luck, keep smiling!

nervous wreck in Kingston, Ontario said: I have been a dental assistant for 9 years and LOVED my job up until the past year. My boss decided to take a practice management course based from Scientology. Up until then he was very appreciative, caring, gentle and laid back. I couldn't have asked for a better employer, the perfect job. Around half-way through his course I noticed a big change, there was no more please or thank you's, he began to get grabby and impatient. He called me into his office one day to ask me if I was happy working in his practice because I didn't seem happy. Sure everyone has their moments and issues in life, but I have not changed anything clinically for 9 years, other than becoming more efficient. Then he sent one of our staff (a good friend of his) on the same management course, her new title is office manager. Even though she has been employed 20+ years for this practice she relies on all of us because she retains nothing in her head, and she is our boss. Now our peaceful little office is turned upside down with closed door meetings and all of our staff is getting in trouble for the littlest issues. I want to quit but keep remembering the good times and how happy we all were. Most of all I love our patients, so needless to say, I am extremely torn wondering what to do. Its too bad he tried to fix something that wasn't broken. If its a matter of money, my advice to him is to quit spending it on personal things.
My advice to anyone thinking of becoming a dental assistant is that the right boss is the key and get ready to work your buns off with very little appreciation. You will be the first one to arrive at work and the last one to leave.

I posted this comment 9 months ago..... since then I have quit working as an assistant... and its the best thing I have ever done... even though I now work shift work in a factory, its worth it because I have gained my self esteem back, get 40 hrs a week and great pay (with raises-WOW)

You need to go to you state board of labor, anything over 40 hours a week is overtime. My old boss in private practice did this, until a past employee brought to the attention of the labor department. Quess what I got a nice check for back pay overtime. So go file a compliant with the labor department and get what is rightfully yours. I would also suggest that assistants join the American Dental Assistants Association. It's not a union, but they may help.

In fact not only after 40 hours...is that after 8 hours (no matter if u work FT or PT) after 8 hours is over time at time and a half paid adn I agree you shourl file a complain cus these f***g DDS want to explote us and pay us the minimun they can, not everyone but most of them I'd say, my previous boss he wouldnt pay OT unless u ask for it from the beginning and he didnt want to pay OT for 15 mins after 8 hours, if ever that we worked 8 hours and 20 mins then yeah but come on, everyday or at least most days we would make 8 and 15 min if u have in mind that we have to be there 5 min before to set up the rooms, same after lunch and then they finish on time or 5-10 after working hours...sometimes we have to be brave and demand for our rights....OVER TIME AFTER 8 HOURS OF WORK EVERYDAY NO MATTER FULL TIME OR PART TIME....;)

I have had simmilar expriances. I was a dental assistant for 4 years. I Loved it. I was good at it and really enjoyed the work. However the last office I was at towards the end of my time there I was the reseptionist rather then an assistant. That would have been fine if not for the "office manager." (whom i might add also a family member of mine) She worked the front desk with me and she and I did not get a long at all. She made my life hell! For the most part the DDS was good employeer, other then the time I was blamed for the cash drawer being short. That money was taken out of my check...and then everyother check afterwords. I would still really love to get back into the field. I do love it. I have had a few offers to return. But I did my homework on the DDS and turned down the offers because I did not like what I was hearing about them. Good Luck to all!

Gosh! Are you kidding? I would never let anybody take the money out of my paycheck. If somebody did that to me, I would immediately file a complaint to the Labor Department.

I wish I was kidding. I had considered filing a complaint. But I was not sure how to go about that. and also I have been out of the office for 3 and half years now so I don't know if I could still do that. Also I didn't want to cause any more family drama then there already had been with my aunt (the office mananger). I guess I might just be a push over in that way.

Also this DDS was working one day a month at the local health department's dental clinic. Long story short with that was that I orignally started there (left on good terms and still am on good terms with them as my mom is working in that clinic). On the days he would go to the clinic, the office would be off work, except for me. I got called in by the Clinic every month to help assist. I was paid by the Clinic rather then DDS I was working for. So I when I left that office he was out an assistant to come help out there with him. He got fired from the clinic after a couple of months and was not allowed to return.

It's really nice to know that I wasn't the only one who experienced unforgettable things. I remembered being threatened for my race & religion by a Dr during the 911..Like all of you, I too was yelled at & blamed with/without a patient around, treated like dirt, disrespected, and under-appreciated. I also never talked back but I did once to one doctor because he always raise his voice at me, overwork me and have in the past tried to force me to go beyond my scope of practice. I was so overworked which gave me a horrible back pain and was so stressed out that I bled and almost lost the baby I was carrying. I do agree that when someone yells at you, they throw you off loving your job and even makes you physically sick. But it wasn't only the Dentists I experience horrible things from. When I was starting, someone tried to frame me for stealing but that person didn't know that I was actually away on a holiday with my mom (who was one of the hygienist) during the time the stealing happen LOL My favourite disgusting experience was a coworker was trying to implement blame on me of the things she was doing. She got fired after I quit. I guess her faults started to get noticed when she has noone to blame. I was even accused of cheating on my husband with a person that she didn't know I only see when my HUSBAND IS AROUND to get a reference letter from for school & work haha..I agree with bringing joy to yourself by taking programs out of dental assisting. I did that too but also for other reasons. I went to nursing school, graduated from dental school and more. Yet, up til now, I am still temping around as a dental assistant while I study for my dental board exams. Unfortunately, it's a long process & requires long hours of studying. Not a lot passes and may take me awhile. So yes, up til now, I put up with the abuse & some of my experiences continue to make me cry.But not all was bad. I work with some nice people but it was brief. All the nice Dr I worked with have loyal DA

The dentist I'm working for has been in practiced for over 30 years and we do everything. He hired a lady with 1 experience and made it my job to train her. It has been tough. I felt like if my kids were sick that I should hire someone to take care of them b/c it would be hard to leave him alone there with her. I recently told him he now has 3 options, I take a sick day, he pay for my childcare, or he get a temp. He said it wasn't his job to pay for my childcare, so I just took a sick day. My first sick day in 3 years. I want to stay home with my kids more than anything, but I have a fantastic sitter. She has been with me since they were babies. I felt a little hurt that he didn't pay for my sitter. I don't know why from now on, I will call in sick.
Help, what do you all think.

I have been an orthodontic assistant for 8 years now. I started with a doctor that was very strict you said yes sir no sir and handed him the instrument correctly or you were called into the office. Thats not my problem though A year after starting a new Doctor bought the practice he was very laid back and very personal with everyone. That was 7 years ago. Now he tells dirty jokes shows dirty pictures, has certain assistants that really dont have a job title except entertaining him with pictures of themselves with thongs or other sexually entertaining shows for him. The assistants that are working get talked about by him to others, its like he is a teenage girl started conflict with everyone. The office is not clean which some of us have tried to discuss with him and he ignores us. We havnt had a raise or review in 5 years with no reason from him. My anxiety is through the roof and its even affecting my home life because I cant find another job. What options do I have now????

Talk to a lawyer. Even here in Canada you would have sexual harassment a case. Lack of boundries makes it sound like he probably has a substance abuse problem as well. Here in Canada Employment Insurance will investigate such claims then give you EI but talk to them anonymously first to see what genie you would uncork if you brought this forward.

Good luck and god speed.

I worked with many dentists. The first one paid in time, but always whatever went wrong was my fault. The second one was intimidating and yelling in front of patients. The third one was fond of dancing. She and her receptionist make assistants life miserable. She had mood swings and take off gloves and work without gloved while doing many procedures. She accused me of "thinking in my head that she is incapable" while she do extractions that is why she had to send patient for emergency care. The next one has Pentecostal views. Her husband is the office manager. She never buy material in time. They usually forget to pay to the staff in time. She payed me $12 per hour. She told me not to use disinfectants on the chair after each patients. Also insisted not to change the headrest cover after each patient. After a while, she told me sweeping and mopping of the office floor and cleaning the washroom are assistants job. But the pay will not be increased with all these added jobs. Thee is no first aid box or even a bandage in the office. Patients under social assistance are not supposed to get a brush after cleaning. The office has digital X-rays, computers and TV in every treatment room. Sometimes, the unsuspecting patients are receiving freezing with an expired lidocaine carpule. The IRM in the office has an expiration date of 2007 on it.They are cutting corners behind the patients. Is there any agency inspecting the infection control protocols of dental offices? I don't want to complain to the RCDSO and loss my job.

Hi Reeni, well let me tell u u r not alone...I have worked with many dentist and there is always "one of a kind"...just the last one I am working for is a piece of...dentist*...he would use every single material
u til no drope comes out of a bottle, the light body material for instance, lol, you can not throw the cartridge away until he says so, and that is when it completely nothing comes out of it; I started to work for ths nasty DDS just 2 months ago but I am looking for another job because I don't agree at all with his philosophy: he would use al expired materials to not waste any, hr would write on the charts with dirty gloves while he works on the px (even though he's in the middle of a sx), he uses one of those old tanks which generate "ice" for pulp vitality, he wants to take advantage of wvey so gle min just to make things "more efficient" and then when he finishes early he would let us go home early while there are a bunch of dirty instruments all piled cus we will have enough time to do it the next day...some of them are really nasty but there are some good ones out there, of course, 1-100...lol...by the way: call OSHA to file a complain and you can always keep your ID anonymous ;-)

I went recently to school to be a denial assistant (basic for 3 months)I'm over 40 and as soon as I walk into a dentist office for an interview or for a working interview which by the way most of them want you to work for free as if gas and time is free!!!they give me nasty looks.I am not ugly mind you,I'm only over 40.No dentist wants to train me,and i was even told over the phone I am not the right age.I am thinking about forgetting the $2275 I spent on school and just take something to support myself. This is crazy.I'm smart, a hard worker and a pretty fast learner, but so far all the dentists I met expect for one are all rude, nasty and disrespectful not to mention they don't want to teach you anything and have bad communication skills!!!!

I just got let go at the office I was at for 1 7 month s he was awesome until he made me float I mean I stared at walls for 7 hrs doing nothing. He take vacations and not pay us. He told me I was a great dental assistant but he needed to hire another girl. He kept me there then fired me and gave me the worse dismissal letter. Then he said I'll give you recommendation letter. I was totally blown away.

What gets me about these dentists is their job postings, they have an extensive list of what they want us to be in order to apply and meet their standards, "seeking an enthusiastic dental assistant, friendly, honest, upbeat," and list all the duties you must be experienced in BUT their ads rarely say what they bring to the table for the position. DENTISTS DO NOT REALIZE THAT RESPECT, PAYS MORE THAN BENEFITS - Do you know how much harder we would work if our dentists told us, "Wow you did a really good job on that last patient," or "If you have any questions about how to do xyz just let me know I'd be glad to take the time to teach you." If they are going to treat people in a non-human way, they better have a full-package of benefits and competitive pay that makes it worth taking such treatment. Dentists GENERALIZE ASSISTANTS, they had a few assistants work for them that were lazy and dumb so they think everyone else is. I've felt my self-esteem lower when a dentist I have worked for treated me very badly. And then I learned, anyone who treats another human being like they are less than a human being has the lowest self-esteem of them all.

Did you ask him what specifically was it about your work that he merited being fired? Maybe you can collect unemployment while you are looking for your next office. I've learned that we have to find the right fit for us. We have to try to find the office we want to work for not one that will have us. And I know that's not very easy to do.

Hi ajessi, sorry to hear what you've been through. I've been in the Dental field for over 20 years and worked in so many different places with all kind of people. Unfortunately, in my own experience, all I can say is that ALL dentist are the same, they don't care about us, and even though they don't have to, I think they should show a bit of apreciation for the job that we do. They see us as working machines and as we help and they can benefit from us everything is ok. They are selfish, greedy and ungrateful.
You should have asked for, not only a recommendation letter but a "Laid off letter" where he stated that he was letting you go, he should have stated that in that letter, so, if you ever had troubles finding a new job, you could collect unemployment. If he treated you that bad, me, in your shoes, I would definetely file a complain with the Dept of Labor for over time and non taken breaks, because I am almost 100% sure he didn't let you take breaks or paid over time after 8 hrs, stating that you didn't work for 40 hrs/wk...am I wrong girl?
Good luck and be tough, if you need help let me know, I don't know everything but along these years I heave learned that when they hit you you should hit back twice as hard. Thoughhhhh, just follow your guts! :-P

You are absolutely right, all dentists and most of their front staff have bad communication skills. I'm over 40 and was out of the dental field for a while and came back into it. I didn't have a hard time finding a job and I got the same pay I got from the last job I had which is not much but it's a good start. The right office will come your way, dental clinics only want to hire young people because they can pay them less and they're thankful for the job. You might find a small office who wants a mature person like yourself who will show up on time and not miss any days. I've interviewed for a lot of places before I found the job I am at and I didn't really like what I saw, dental mills basically. A few of them were interested in me but mostly got turned off when they found out how much I make which I didn't think was a lot, so that tells you, right now in this economy no one wants to pay what you are worth even with your training and rda no matter what your teacher told you. If you want to be in this field, you have to start somewhere they will recognize you as valuable and then it's up to you to do some continuing ed to show that you are more valuable.

Hi apparently I have a more beautiful name than listed. I want my comments confidential. I have been a dental assistant for twelve years. I stay quiet and work hard. I will even plant flowers to help in the flower bed outside the office. I even vacuum and clean toilets. I don't mind because I love to clean and clean houses on the side. I don't complain about extra work and can see the stress denitst have. I don't ever call in sick and I am a single mom. I am always nervous to buy a home and paranoid of being fired. I have been fired three times in Duluth, for no good reasons. One I had to fight in court for my unemployment. Well, I don't let this get the best of me, but I do loose my self-esteem and get really scared. I am told by patients I am sociable and very nice. I do my best and try to be error free. I like to have fun but get so uptight when a doctor gives me dirty looks or says something that is really mean. I have recently cried so hard I had snot in my mask. And I couldn't even assist because of the tears in my eyes. I believe, its just my opinion, but I think its the military that wrecks those good dentist. They seem so disgruntled and angry. I notice nothing is good enough. All the dentist I do work for has always thanked me. So I guess, I just ignore it. Except previously said he was mean when I cried a few months ago. I need income as a single mom and always feel so insecure. I do nothing wrong. Always punctual always dependable. Had a comment said to me"Not talking isn't the answer." I am just plain scared!!!!!!
