Can anyone give me an idea of how dangerous it is to work on pt's that are on N2O while you are pregnant? I did not do it while I was pregnant and now I have a coworker that did when she was pregnant and her daughter ended up with cancer and now she is pregnant again and she wants some advice on if she should or should not work with N2O. Thank you

There's risk of miscarriage, and your dentist knows it. I wouldn't do it, it's not worth it.

Here's where I think this gets confusing....Technically there is no law that says you cant be in the room (well we dont have on in Tennessee). If you are pregnant and you sit in with a pt on N2O you run the risk of misscarriage, birth defects, etc. Most OB-GYNs would sugg not doing it.

Most doctors do not recommend being in the same room with N2O unless there is an effective evacuation system. You can also put a fan in the room which helps to diffuse the concentration. In Europe, they use it regularly and pregnant women work around it with no real evidence of complications. We in the US are more cautious.

I have been pregnant 3 times while being a dental assistant and all three times my employers did not want me in the room with N2O. I say if there are questions, better to be safe. There is nothing more important then the health of your child.
