Going through the dental hygiene program is stressful, but getting a good enough shift (to raise a family) is more stressful.
After getting my license, I was the lucky few to get a job right away. I'm currently working in 4-5 dental offices, but I'm still working for less than 20 hours per week. I do have a huge respect on the profession; however, If only I was given another chance to go back, I will definitely try to pursue other profession (e.g. Nursing). For those who are struggling like everybody else, we can do this. For those who are planning to take up the program, save yourself from hardhip and frustrations. Ask around before you even enroll. I would suggest you talk to the people hwo are in the industry (Your dentist, Your dental hygienist, other clinic's dental hygienists, CDHO, the instructors of the school your planning to go to) and you'll get the same answer, it's a tough market. Thank you for reading. I hope that I have relayed my message without offending anybody. Goodluck! |

No, I don't you have offended anyone. You've simply stated the truth about the present DH situation: there are simply too many hygienists competing for too few jobs. As a result of this saturation, DH has changed, perhaps irrevocably: it has become more and more of a part-time job with few to no benefits and absolutely no job security. Jobs go to the person who will work for the least amount of money. I wouldn't recommend this job field to anyone now. |

I'm the same with you Frustrated DH. I would just wish that people take our comments seriously. I was saddened by the fact that regardless of what people read about the current job market of this profession, people still pursue it. |

I would love to know what the schools are telling their students now about the job scene. Are they encouraging them to be optimistic and and that eventually a great job will come their way? Are they expecting a lot of presently employed hygienists to retire? Are they being realistic with these students? This is a job whose time has come and gone. |
