Do you have a second career choice? The Dental Hygiene field is oversaturated and expensive and stressful with a VERY ?able work situation = too many in our field now. I hate to see you spend so much money on a major that may (if you read further on this site), not have an income you can count on to pay your bills, and retirement? This does not happen for many in the field now...you are on your own in regards to saving for old age....many older D.H.'s also, staying in practices, if the Dr.'s don't look at "if you are pretty enough" for their practice....not a field of opportunity and good pay as it was 2+ yrs. ago. Reality, honesty, truth...to what I am telling you...please think forward....GL

Hi everyone! I am still working on my prerequisites and hopefully I will be able to apply to Amarillo CC for the hygiene program. Can anyone tell me what kind of grades they look at, or how many points are usually accepted. And also if it would be more likely to get accepted if someone has an Associates or Bachelor's degree. Thanks I really appreciate it!

Are there any other majors at that school? Please research the D.H. "work situation" in CA before you apply to D.H. school. What is the success rate of grads that find "gainful" employment, within the past year (set regular days, pay, any docking of time if pts don't show up)? Speak with D.H.'s working F.T. AND "P.T.", as to pay, hours, etc...Talk with temp agencies or D.H.'s at practices that might be temping for the regular D.H. (how often do they have work, pay, taxes taken out, CAN THEY LIVE ON THE WAGES MONTHLY/YEARLY?). Research, and have your questions ready to ask those in our field. GL on your career choice.

Hi Alisha, Are you interested in any other careers? D.H., is a people oriented field, although alot of shy people are "actors"! What are you interested in as far as sciences? There are alot of science courses....Give us insight as to what interests you...then maybe we can help in some way...23yr VET D.H.

I went for an interview at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon last year and was an alternate (so I will be going through the interview process again this year). It was a group interview and in the beginning we were each given a piece of paper with three questions on it, What are your goals?, What skills/volunteerism/jobs/etc. do you believe have prepared you to become a dental hygienist?, and I can't remember the last one.

Then we were all given a piece of paper upside down in front of us... when it was our turn we had a minute to answer each of the 5 questions on the page. All of the questions were about teamwork.

Does anyone know what they are looking for in answers to teamwork questions? I get SO nervous at interviews!

In dentistry, you have to be able to work with other people on your dental team in order to be successful. Being able to work well with your dentist and the other hygienists or assistants in your office will be very important. When asked this question in an interview, it would be nice to have an example of teamwork in a dental office or in school. Hope this was helpful!

Hi, I'm sure you have been a part of a team in some capacity, ie-in H.S. on a team? in a play? in a chorus? Do any of these apply to you...have you been a member of a group, such as scouts growing up or in a club at school...look at these and/or google teamwork, it may give you insight at to answers they may be looking for...give a little , take a little, show someone how to..., learn from others, experiences from observation of those around you...hope this helps. Try to show the positive as much as possible and take the negative as a learning experience*.

I have an interview at USC on March 13th. I'm Viet with blond highlights and brown dyed hair. Some people told me to dye it drk brown or black for the interview but I don't want to make drastic changes that might not be such a big factor. And plus, I don't look good with dark hair like my natural roots. Well, what I want to ask is... does anyone know what questions would be asked at the DH interview at USC? I read the interviews ?s so far in here and it helps a lot. And, should I even dye my hair? Other advices are greatly appreciated too. Thanks.

Hi I am going to have an interview on March 13th at USC also how funny... Its a group interview so I don't know what to expect the answers here have helped me..but well I know its hard to get in and I am worried! Even though I do want to go into dental hygiene my ultimate goal is to become a dentist I believe that dental hygiene is a great B.S opportunity for someone interested in the field of dentistry. Well That is my honest opinion, I don't understand why individuals who want to get into dental school later on cant be a dental hygiene previously? I think everyone should have a chance to follow their own dreams the way they want to...So basically I would need to lie in order to get in! has anyone who is a dental hygiene ever wanted to become a dentist, or anyone in the same position I am in? can anyone help me please and if you know any questions they will be asking it will be great..

Watch out for trick ?'s. If you want to be a dentist, why are you going into hygiene first? Are you afraid you won't like it or that you can't do the work? Actual ? asked by Eastern University to one of my peers and friends. Her answer: Due to family obligations and money I know that I have the ability for a 2 year degree right now and I want to start something I will finish. I will go to dental school either here or somewhere else but right now it's not feasible. She graduated hygiene school with me and 5 years later graduated dental from Eastern. She worked the entire time while in dental school as a hygienist. Good Luck.

I am in your situation as well. I already have an A.S.degree in Dental Assisting from OCC. Now, I have applied to USC, Loma Linda, and West Coast University for their Bachelor's degree in Dental Hygiene program. My ultimate goal is to become a dentist. I am just going to work as a DH for a year or two while I am finishing up my ochem/physics classes to apply to the DDS Doctoral Programs from every dental schools. Being a DH is a great foundation as you will be ahead when your at dental school. When I was volunteering at UCLA dental school, I met four students there that were previously a Dental Hygienist. Don't listen to other people that says bio should be preferred. You can major in anything as long as you do the pre-requsite for dental school. Good Luck!

If you have the ability to go straight to dental school, you should apply for dental school. Don't waste two yrs of dental hygiene program. Take the DAT exam and see if you are ready for dental school. Make sure dental works are what you would like to do for the rest of your life. Dental hygiene is totally different from Dental school. If you go for USC dental hygiene interview, DO NOT MENTION THAT YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BECOMING A DENTIST LATER ON. Make sure you do research on what dental hygiene is, about DH history to now. Be yourself and they might pick you. Good luck!

Yeah I know I have to take the DAT but in order to apply to Dental school one need an B.S in anything, most people choose biology which its cool if that what they choose but what is wrong with choosing Dental Hygiene B.S the two years are still going to go by either way...so I don't see the point in why not go for Dental hygiene. I am positive that dental works is what I want to do my whole life! I love it which is why I want this so bad...Thanks for your comments! :)

Yeah, DH is the best route to go, not biology. You can't do much with a B.S. in bio later on if you decide to end there. At least Hygiene will gear you towards the dental field anyway and you can work while you prepare yourself for dental school. Well, good luck and I will see you and everyone else for the interview on March 13th! If anyone still knows anything about USC interview, please do help us out! :)

L82, If you want to go to DENTAL school...training as a D.A. would afford you more of what the Dr. does and application of materials and procedures as to being a D.H.....also, as a D.A. you may find "regular/set hours, pay, and BENEFITS!!!!" D.H.'s in MOST cases don't get these in today's market. Is your pay, hours or any benefits (Ha on this one...)set?....don't waste your valuable time and money on D.H., hard to re-coupe this $ , vying for the very few positions listed - 100+ resumes for the Dr. to choose from....being real.

Hi exp,
I am well aware of your message as I have read your posting throughout every DH forum. I don't know why you are targeting me if I am just giving someone encouragement on the path they are going. I already have my DA. I have friends and places where DH jobs are available to me in California, and local. I like this field and I would like to someday pursue something higher than a DH if I have the chance. In "my opinion" I'd say "go for it" to anyone who tries because I like to encourage others, not shoot them down. The job market is bad everywhere, regardless of employment title or position. Bottom line is, the economy is bad and it's unknown when things will get better. I am still young and for others who are like me -- let us be hopefuls because we still have a long ways to go as long as we have a direction. I am sure we all did our research about hygiene and want this as a career before we decide to go to college for it and pay lotsa $$$. I understand your concern but this is wrong to discuss how harsh to find employment, and everything else that's negative to being a DH. Maybe it is a little different in Los Angeles, or Orange County, California compared to where you live. I see that you are struggling there, but why are you saying as if it's for all other hygienist out there?

(continued) Let them speak for themselves, and believe me, I read others who are like you too struggling to find jobs. But it's funny because the one that do have a job and love being a DH, don't spend the time or effort rebutting your opinion because they are out spending time with their families or friends.

Honestly, you did change my mind after reading your postings in the other forums. I had to seek friends and family for reassurance that I am going towards the right path. I felt lost at some point because it made me disappointed that what I spent 2 years trying my butt off in school to get straight A's for a chance to get into USC's DH program is now worthless??? Let me ask you, what should I do? Should I spend another year waiting to go into nursing school (because you say it's better than DH) and what if someone like you who is posting the same comments like that about nursing? Should I spend another year again to rethink? By then, I probably would have given up and stick to a dead end job to make ends meet? Then I can go on these forums and join you, as well as others like you?
I believe you have every right to raise your concern but I think when people search these forums for DH, they find you everywhere saying "no to DH!" The message you are saying is quite clear, so please, let this be the ONLY forum for "Dental Hygiene Interview Questions for College". Thank you :)

Hey, don't say you weren't given the honest truth and that you didn't make an informed decision.
I am not "exp" but will tell you that he/she is just trying to help.
You should take your straight A's and put them to better use.
Unless your friends and family are RDHs you are not going to get an honest answer from them. That's all you are getting here.

To RDH in Calgary, Alberta:
Please reread what I've posted before because you are not understanding my message. I am not here to debate about what's great or not so great being an RDH or regarding employment in this field. Please look at the title of this forum. It is about college interview questions. I don't know how many "exp" are out there, but common, just punch in dental hygiene and you can find him/her in LITERALLY every single forum saying, "no to DH" in one way or another. I think we all get it and you don't have to reassure anymore about the truth and messages. I respect yours and "exp" opinions as well but everyone has the freedom to think and make the decisions for themselves. That's what made us different. We all have different opinions, different lives, different situations, but you and "exp" are overpowering everyone's decisions and choices. If you or "exp" are saying that you are not being negative but are just speaking the TRUTH, why don't you help all hygienist and voice your opinions to the schools to lower our tuition or talk to the dentist to hire more people. Just give people the credit for their eagerness to learn and even going out to get an education. There's always going to be new graduates every year, even though you might change a few minds, but it's not going to make much of a difference. It's way better to speak the TRUTH to the main target like the dentist who are not giving you or others employment. That will benefit you and others in your situation. Plus, I think it will be more positive and rewarding for everyone to hear.

Do what you want, but I am not targeting you or any other person as to what information and experience I give...whether you are in CA or the N.E., the situation of oversaturation of the D.H. field is apparent(sp). If you have your mind set on D.H....continue, but, also know that it's not just the economy hitting our field, it's the number of those graduating into this field that will have a big debt to try and pay back and possibly no employment in the field after spending big $ on it! Calgary, AB, myself and many others if you read and are taking notes of info to those on this site, are giving "experience from being/ and presently trying to practice in our field, info, as to what we see in offices/office politics, resumes innudating(sp) offices where we practice, and seeing the vying for your position; the schools don't speak the truth

To L82 cont....
D.H. is not "Rosey" now. I'm sure you have you mind set, as do many others...you've researched your state, spoken with P.T. D.H.'s, shadowed, and asked many ?'s....hopefully with answers for both sides pos. and "?able"(neg. as you see it). I feel you are targeting me on my opinions...what I am giving is my exp, and info as to the way I see it. If your friends and or family(?) who are in D.H., have a position for you in an office when you have completed your ed...that's great....but we (many others besides me) are voicing what is happening to "many" of us...now. As to the question of speaking to schools, Dentists, ADHA, etc....they don't listen, and if they have been contacted, which I'm sure they have, are not voicing their opinions or help here. The Dr.'s are now able to pick and choose with no negotiation by the D.H.'s they hire...if they want the position....this is what you will receive...BLS? They are NOT D.H.'s, and are misleading those as to opportunity in DENTAL, when it is medical...P.S. Others are voicing their opinions to this site's ?, so, take what we say or not and utilize it how you wish. I for one don't like to see the many recent grads who've been sold on this field (as you can see on many threads) with the lack of employment, debt, and possibly tangenting into another field to be able to work.

L82 - Exp and RDH in Calgary ARE NOT BEING NEGATIVE! They are being KIND. We are all in this together. Dental hygiene is changing, and will not ever be what it was. Think about it logically...

The private schools are pumping huge numbers of hygienists into the market = TONS of hygienist.
The DDS are in trouble because their patients don't have jobs, and no dental insurance = less jobs.
The market is therefore shrinking, and the # of hygienists increasing. Can you see that this is not a good situation.

It's basic math. And it will not change until those schools shut down, the market stabalizes to the point where everyone is working again, and the DDS start to make money again. It all comes down to the fact that dental is a BUSINESS, and BUSINESS is BAD right now...and will be for some time.

Also, the DDS don't like dental hygienists all that much, and that is very apparent right now...they are firing long term accreditted hygienists and hiring 'hygienists' that have questionable training, and are willing to work for very little money. Are you willing to work for 25$/hr..because that is what the going rate will be by the time you are finished your training. Maybe lower.

Go and watch a RDH, phone the temp agencies, phone DDS offices...ask what they think is going to happen to hygiene, phone your ADHA. Don't take our word for it..research. Hygiene is a repetative, tough job with a lot of pressure to "produce". You are a "direct producer", and man, you better produce. It is not the service industry that you have been told about. It is a business, and you work for a boss that expects you to make $$.

Think about it again. Don't be in debt for 60+K with a mediocre paying job at the end of it, if you can even get one.

Hi Morgan,
Nice to meet you and I look forward to seeing you there. Unfortunately, I don't use Facebook that often. Maybe we can exchange our contacts at USC. In the meantime, we can keep in touch here.

OKAY PEOPLE!!! You are starting to sound less frustrating to me but more pleasant to read now. I seriously mean it. I find it entertaining because I see how you are so dedicated to writing to me about how DH is. You don't seem to get what my message is. Maybe there's a miscommunication about this forum. Wait...am I in the right forum? Isn't this about "Dental Hygiene Interview Questions for College??"
Wow! I hope I am not like that already or even imagine becoming like that when I graduate from school. Then I have to move out of California. Well, keep on writing back to me if you want and I'll enjoy reading your feedbacks...hehehe... :)
When I have a lot of time on my hands, I promise you that I'll go on your other forums and be more positive and lighten things up about DH. But in the meantime, I got things to worry about, not a debate on who's being positive/negative and the forcast of DH. So write to me if you want and defend one another. I'm just going to kick back and read your comments and "enjoy". Many thanks :)
***For others who respond to this forum for the right purpose of this forum, feel free to post your interview questions. I'll keep you updated on how my interview go, and will respond to people who are like me...interested, hopeful, and see the better outlook of things. Please don't let ANYONE, I mean seriously ANYONE discourage you. I look at this and see that it can makes me stronger***

Wow L82! That attitude will get you a long way in hygiene. I am currently a senior in my hygiene program and can honestly tell you that you will NEVER make it as a dental hygienist with a mouth like that, now will you finish a hygiene program with any friends. People join this forum to gain help in their interviews, you and your sarcastic and rude attitude are not welcome here. I think all would agree with me! Pick a new career!

Hi hopeful in Seattle, WA. I'm not exactly sure what the questions they would ask but here are a few I got from others to prep me for the interview:
1) What are your strengths and weaknesses?
2) Why did you choose this profession?
3) Why did you choose this school?
4) If there is one word to describe yourself, what would it be and why?
5) What do you see yourself in 5 years from now?
6) How well do you work in a team?

Those are just a few but I'll keep you posted after I get my interview. Where did you apply to?

To Hopeful in Seattle: I also applied to Shoreline. Have you heard anything from them? I'm still trying to figure out questions to ask the interviewer. Can I ask what school you took your pre-req's? I wish you the best of luck!

I have to agree with everybody above - this is a forum for Dental Hygiene Interview Questions! These people obviously just want to discourage everyone from being a dental hygienist so there will be more jobs out there for them...

I wish you all luck!!! I have an interview this Friday March 12th at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon and am pretty nervous! I just hope I get into the program this year! (This is my second year applying) I think my only set back is that I havn't worked in the dental field, I've just done a lot of shadowing, but my grades are really good (only 1 B in a Writing Class)

That's one thing about the interview process. I think they want to hear examples of you working things out within the dental field, but I currently work as a bookkeeper, so most of my answers to behavioral interview questions are in regards to my job I have now. Hopefully this won't set me back too much! Again GOOD LUCK!

Since none of you want to listen to the old timers who are just trying to discourage you so there will be "more jobs out there for them" (haha-that's a good one) here are some recent posts from NEW GRADS.
You can ask all the questions you want about interview questions but the bottom line is your chances of getting a job once you are done schooling is slight.
Here you go!!

*I graduated 2yrs ago and was very proud of my accomplishment of becoming a dental hygienist. Unfortunately for me, my family and my wallet...I did not know that after I graduated 2 YEARS AGO that I would be in a very competetive market!!!! I am sooooo frustrated and disapointed with my decision to become a dental hygienist. I have exhausted my entire area where I live for distributing resumes as well as other students that I have graduated with...But here is the disturbing part...The school that I graduated from is still pumping out hygiene students like no other...and sadly, promising them a Great future..little do they know that there are no jobs in dental hygiene!!!!! I am thinking about going back to assisting because there seems to be jobs available and here is the kicker... THEY PAY almost as much as hygiene in my area if you are experienced.......GO FIGURE!!!!!!! I should have just stayed an assitant an avoided all the debt and hardship that I put my family through!!! So the moral of this story is....Don't go to school to be a dental hygienist!!!!!!!!!

*Dental hygienist seems like a great field to go into because the pay seems really good but i have talked to a lot of DH & they have lost their jobs, or new graduates can't find jobs after school! A lot can only find part time work with no benefits.

*Be smart and look to aother field. You will not be happy in the dental field. You may not even be able to find a job. The market is flooded. Good Luck

*this is a bad choice. READ ALL the comments. Read the want ads. Call a temp agency. there are no jobs.

*things here in the VA ar

*things here in the VA area are tight too. Lots of technology in the dental field, lots of RDH looking for jobs and too many graduating every year saturating the market. I was told that the Dental Hygiene field was one of the top ten careers of the year!!!! in whoes mind!!!!!!!!!!!!! guess they just counted the graduates; they should have counted the unemployed instead.

And FYI L82 NONE of the above comments were from "exp"...they were from new grads and all in the states.

I know none of this is going to change your rose colored world but hopefully it may help someone else contemplating hygiene as a career.

As a career you guys are 10-15 years too late.

Thank the private schools & the economy. GL.

Good Luck Ashley! I am pretty sure they'll remember you the second time around and you'll make it in. It's very competitive, especially at a community college. Where I live, there's a waitlist to get in (I think for 2 years) but I'm applying to a private school for my BS RDH so it's a little easier. Again, wish you the best of luck! :)

More jobs for us...lol, that's good. RDH in Calgary..I give up, and L82, you are an idiot. The evidence is in front of you, and you choose to ignore it. Good luck, and I wish you all the best.
