I am a Jr. in High School and I plan to attend college for 4 years after that I plan to attend dental hygienist school in Texas or Louisiana. I currently do not know where I will reside but I would highly appreciate it if I could get honest opinions about school that are worth attending. |

I am familiar with University of Louisiana Monroe hygiene program also. Monroe always has above average National Board scores but both have great passing rates. The difference between the two is LSU has a more updated and spacious facility than Monroe. Monroe's program goes strictly by high GPA while LSU focuses on GPA and interview which gives you more of a chance to impress them. LSU now has two different locations for applicants to apply for in Baton Rouge and New Orleans. The website is www.lsusd.lsuhsc.edu for more info. Hope this helps you! |

LSU is a much harder school to get into. I know, I have applied. Its very difficult. The school in Monroe is not as difficult. The GPA requirements for Monroe is not as high as for LSU. You basically need near a 4.0 (3.4 really) to even be considered for an interview at LSU. Monroe GPA requirements are around a 2.5. At least with Monroe, if all your application materials are in and you have at least a 2.5, you are most definitely granted an interview. If you don't have an extremely high GPA for LSU, you can basically forget it. I am just telling you what I know since I am from the area. I hope this helps you. The school website for monroe is www.ulm.edu/dentalhygiene/ Good luck with your future plans. |

Monroe has a four year degree plan right there at the University so you don't have to worry about transferring. I wish I knew this, I wouldn't have wasted 4 years at another University before applying. The program is four years TOTAL. This includes the hygiene program. My advice, why do 6 years total when you can do 4 years altogether at 1 university? |

You do need at least a 3.0 or higher for an interview at LSU. ULM will give you an interview but chances of getting accepted are slim to none if you do not have a high gpa of 3.7 and above. You can do two years of pre-requisites at any university and then apply for a 2 year dental hygiene program for a total of 4 year Bachelor's Degree. You do not need an extremely high gpa for LSU because I did not and still graduated to become a Hygienist. Both ULM and LSU are great programs. Do not subject yourself to applying for just one program in Louisiana. There are about five programs in Shreveport, Monroe(ULM), New Orleans(LSU), Baton Rouge(LSU), and Lafayette,La(ULL/LSU). Apply for as many as you can and look up your own information for assurance in making the right choice. You can rest assure that there are plenty of jobs available for hygienist in Louisiana. Good Luck!!! |

I talked to the head of the department at LSU recently, and K is right. For LSU, you do need at least a 3.4 to be recognized for LSU. LSU requirements increase every so often. A few years back the gpa requirement was a 3.0. You can try other schools as well. LSU is VERY, I mean VERY competitive. |

Also, the schools in Lafayette, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans, all operate under LSU, so the requirements are about the same. |

I am asking because the requirements are increasing in terms of gpa and the program is becoming even more competitive at LSU. Many other people that I know are going for the same program are applying or have applied and haven't got in. Sometimes it may take a couple of times to apply. I know many who have done that. |

ULM is talking about discontinuing dental hygiene, therefore the demand for hygienist will increase. |

hi, i have a question, to get into hygiene school do you have to have a bachelors degree, or can you get in by having years of experience of assisting at a dental office? |

No you don't have to have a bachelors degree prior to dental hygiene school. You can get an associates or a bachelors in dental hygiene. With the associates different schools have different pre-reqs. |

I do not know where in Texas you live, but I went to Tyler Junior College in Tyler and it's a great program! Successful passing rates on both National and Regional boards. You are definately prepared as an entry-level dental hygienist after graduating from TJC. I hear that both TWU and Baylor have really good programs as well, but I didn't research it very much b/c I knew I was going to Tyler. If you have any other questions feel free to ask :) |

Aly R. in Houston, Texas said: i have a question!:) Hi, In any program you don't need to make all "A's". Try to prep for school...ie-get the main books if available now and read through them; google info, this is a very good resource for asking and getting answers to ?'s you can't find in a quick read of books , talk to DA's...it's a start...and, you are more likely to find employment with ben's compared to DH's!!! GL on your research...skip the DH program, check back with that in a few years, it is very expensive and the job market is oversaturated...not worth going into debt for DH. Many in DH also don't receive a ben. pkg compared to DA's. I'm not sure of the cost in your state, but up here in the N.E., DA training: $2,000 to $4,000. and DH is ridiculous (with little prospects, competition is also ridiculous...1-2 ads = 100 resumes easily...and cost around$40.000.+++ for the ed). |

PLEASE do your research beyond "your dream to be an RDH"...what the online articles, govt. and BLS say is NOT TRUE for our field. If you train as a "DA" to start you can see what the future holds from actually working in the dental field.....it's alot of money and stress to train in a field with minimal offering of work...plus, many DA's receive the ben's, vaca, etc...that many RDH's have to cover for themselves. Pay is getting to the "equal" mark and DH's don't get the comp DA's receive...rough road ahead for you in this field...giving you this experience from working in this field for 24 years...not worth the debt incurred...you can see this from many recent grads and soon to be grad's on here telling you their story. P.S. It is NOT the economy for the RDH, it is the oversaturation of this field now...get your feet wet in dentistry by becoming a DA, get a paycheck, see the working of offices (watch and listen to what the RDH experiences in practice)...does she have med/dent/sick and vaca days/ paid holidays/ CEU's paid for by the DR.???; many RDH's ON THEIR OWN FOR ALOT OF THIS...also, think now of your future 30 years down the road, when you might want to retire? Ben's :ie- IRA, retirement paid in by your Dr., NOT happening, your retirement is what YOU personally save on your own...think forward for your comfort in your older years....I say what I do because it is a struggle for many of us now...take what you need from this, and think out your decision...many in debt and no job to payback loans for school...things to think seriously about on your part. |

Yes...this is about the OVERSATURATION of schools and resulting DH grads. It is NOT just about the ECONOMY. Many have huge student loans with no job to payback loans to these 'quick grad schools'. Search out what is truly happening in the DH field BEFORE putting your money down. Schools are misleading about the 'numerous jobs' out there.... |

Hi 30yr VET,...schools are MISLEADING, as are "Govt., online articles and IMO those on here that have FT work with ben's they are in the minority and were very fortunate to obtain their positions, etc....AND their jobs are not safe either, even if they think things are great...there are practices that replace "us" on a whim, or after setting up smooth running DH dept.'s...and we have no re-course...very sad. It's really not the economy at all, if it were , we would have ups and downs with a few finding work, definitely oversaturation is the culprit....economy....IMO, NOT. How's work at your office lately? Have a good day ... |

Dear EXP---oh for sure! I was agreeing with you when you said it was not about the economy....SO TRUE!.....this is all about having way too many DH schools 'pop up in the last five years' and flooding the market with all these grads..... You were bang on with what you said! I just sometimes want to re-emphasize it because there are some people searching here thinking "oh things will just turn around once the economy gets going again"....when NO>>>>it's not that! If there were 1000 dentists in a province or a state....and all of a sudden there were 5000 dentists in that same province or state....THEN people would "UNDERSTAND SATURATION OF A PROFESSION"....understand how ridiculous it is for all these DH schools to pump out all these grads....and how it affects the workforce IRREPARABLY.....
|
|
exp in Epping, New Hampshire 18 months ago |
Hi 30yr. VET...Thanks! I've never heard the term "bang on...." sounds British...:-) I think we will get through to a few (very few) but at least they will not be in debt like so many others are...and not thinking "I'm different, I will find the coveted position with good pay, etc..." living in a crystal ball...wake up and smell the reality given here...stop asking the same ? about becoming "ONLY" an RDH....the run is over ladies and gentlemen...if you have money to burn , please don't burn it, send it to me...I could use more income....getting by is hard now and this is not the field of opportunity it once was! Sorry, but reality is real for DH. |

I've been working in dental hygiene for 3 years. I really like my job, but alot of recent grads have had trouble getting jobs. We are constantly getting applications for DH jobs at my work, but I'm not going anywhere! My boss commented to me a few months ago that he didn't realize how many more hygienists there were then dentists in the state (Mississippi). And since we have to work for them... well, the word "saturated" is accurate for our field. Plus, it takes a dentist about 8 years to graduate, and (depending on a degree and program) only 2-4 years for a hygienist, AND there are more hygiene schools per state, so the number of hygienists looking for work is going up quickly, while the demand is slower growing. |

Ms. Martinez, I graduated from LSU less than two years ago. When I entered I had less than a 3.5 and got in on the first try. I believe with LSU the interview can make or break you. If you explain why you went to Delgado instead of a university in your interview I don't think you would have a problem. Retaking the ACT is a bit much because they just want to see if you can handle a large course load and your desire to be hygienist. If you go online they give you a list of courses to take from each university in Louisiana. Try to shadow a hygienist to see if this is something you really want to do. If you love it then do it and don't be discouraged by other unhappy RDH's. There will always be more people to tell you what's bad than what's good. Fortunately for us, we live in a state where there are jobs because there is just about 2 dental offices on every corner in New Orleans. In Northern Louisiana there are not that many. I have a salary job, full benefits, pension plan, and an assistant. If I would have listen to others I wouldn't have my blessing of a job. Not every job is like this but if you are connected to the right people you will get far. Not to be offensive but I am assuming you are hispanic because of your last name and I want you to know that you are needed in this field. Our population has changed in New Orleans and my job is looking for someone who is bilingual. You would be a great asset to this Profession so continue to do your research and stay focus on your goal:) |

jojo, It appears you can't take what you need and disregard what YOU don't like. Attitude is a big part of staying the course in school and they won't put up with you...you'll do what you want, but many prefer knowing the current market and take what WE, many of us in the field with experience and knowledge on this forum are saying...so go for what you want, as you said "if don't work then isnt that on me ....". You definitely also appear to have anger issues...don't know your upbringing, but the name calling and your harassing and condesending attitude show lack of understanding to what MANY on here say. Polite and reasonable as this site asks, no nasty and immature as you are showing us here...lighten up. |
