I'm currently looking for more hours. The dentist I work for is thinking about retiring and is currently cutting back his hours thus my hours are cut back too.I used to work for a temp service way back in Milwaukee and used to get a lot of job prospects that way so I was just wondering if there was a temp service available around here in central Wisconsin |

I'm thinking of considerding a attendint dental hygenist as my career but I don't want to jump in and regret it later.. like what i've done with my esthetician job. Is there any way find out the nature of the job? |
|
Ginger RDH in Spokane, Washington 40 months ago |
I think it's a reat career, especially if you have a family. It all depends on if you work well with the office your at. I have worked for a couple of dentists that I didn't really get along with but now that I have found an office that I love, I absolutely love my job. It can get a little monotoneous but so can most jobs. |

Is there any way find out the nature of the job? Try to work as a "Gopher" in a dental office(s). They may or may not pay you in this economy. Speak with actual Hygienists working not the schools to know more of "the reality, job market at present and forward".... Also, look into the State(s) where you would like to ultimately practice in. Do you enjoy sciences? There are a lot of courses in this. Also, there are pre-requisites to entering any programs....ask the schools about this...Expensive to also train...if you are presently working ; weekends would be the only time I'd recommend working due to the course loads. Good Luck with your decision! |

Forget about "gopher" go get a dental assistant postition. Try it for a few months then you can shadow the hygienist and will get an idea of what autonomy comes with being the clinician.

Is anyone from Denver Co area? I am moving there next month from New Jersey and I hear the market is real bad for Hygienists out there due to the overflux of hygienists because there are so many hygiene schools .....do I have any chances of getting a job out there??? |

See if your own Dr. is willing to let you observe....BUT....just to let you know about this field....I am a 23yr Vet of D.H. and the pay is going down, TOO many are going into this field so that the few offices looking can pay you less and offer you ZIP! Think forward (past hourly pay) 20-30 yrs....think Nursing, Radiology....if you are interested in medical or go to D.A. school they tend to receive: "BENEFITS"!!! R.D.H.'s tend to just get hourly pay and maybe CPR and OSHA training....A very fortunate few find good offices ....but there are so many of us now that the ridiculous cost, stress,etc...is not worth it! |

GapZap Dental Staffing in Gilbert, Arizona 31 months ago |
Jobs are pretty scarce unfortunately due to this economy but things are looking up for 2010. I have spoken to many dentists that are planning on bringing more staff on in the new year so be patient and keep looking. In the meantime, all dental hygienists and dental assistants looking for work can register for free at GapZap Dental Staffing located at www.gapzap.com and search available jobs. We have just launched and are trying to build out our unique and fully-automated dental staffing solution. The theme of GapZap Dental Staffing is very similar to Monster.com but geared specifically for the dental industry. It is truly a unique service that allows dental practices and recruiters to post both temporary and temp-to-hire jobs for hygienists and dental assistants. Registration is free for dentists and recruiters and dental candidates looking for work and during our initial launch it is also free for Dentists and recruiters to post jobs and hire or place qualified candidates. As you know, it can be very tough for dentists to find and place qualified hygienists and assistants and this new service was created to give practices a better, cheaper alternative when it comes to staffing. But it was also designed to allow recruiters the opportunity to find and get in front of more dental candidates as well. This is the only service of its kind right now and is an offering I believe can and will benefit the entire dental community when it comes to both hiring and finding employment. It is both efficient and cost-effective and as I said above, is absolutely free for dentists and recruiters during our initial launch. Please check us out, register today and if you find it useful help us get the word out. |

You are right. They will also find out the hard way what we are talking about having to work for a#$holes when we cannot get that "good job", maybe for years hanging on to any hope. Having to fight daily for the rights of our unsuspecting patients because he/she is money crazy and only thinking of their student loans or new car or whatever. Dr is definitely in the drivers seat. Well put! |

hygiene sucks!!!!!!!!!! big time!!!!!!!! in Toronto, Ontario 30 months ago |
and it will only get worse instead of better!!!!! For all you people looking for jobs in different areas, read the posts!!! And for those of you that do have jobs, be thankful because any time and any day it can be gone...and for all you wanna be hygienists, take note, there is no security, no benefits, no nothing!!! so go into another field...unless your husband, brother, or any relative is a dentist!! |
|
Suzanne in Terre Haute, Indiana 30 months ago |
I agree once again! Any time and any day it can be gone is right!! There are so many hygienists needing a job that you basically have to keep your mouth shut and do what is asked of you whether it's right morally or ethically as you can be replaced on a whim. Then where are you going to go? I think many of us who have had this happen have had an "in the face" so to speak reality check. There is no security with our jobs. My last dr told me "don't get me wrong, you're a fantastic hygienist who can turn that chair over and you ALWAYS put your patients first" BUT, "you need a job that you can count on and hygiene is more of a day to day freelance type of job". I was absolutely stunned. I sat in my car in a state of shock realizing I had nothing. I had been giving 110% to this guy for years and when I got that last paycheck there would be nothing else. I felt so angry and also duped. I look back on the times I went into debt for house, cars, ect depending on my hygiene pay and think it's a miracle I didn't wreck my life! It's all well and good to have a goal but I agree with you, the wanna be hygienists should take heed and give it up. |

Hi Suzanne and Hyg. S's, Those who DON'T LISTEN to us will see...Many are strong-willed and thus they don't think the current situation APPLIES to THEM....O.K. , good luck and remember what we've said...think forward...20-30yrs....what will you have....have you already started your own IRA, or Money Market account...are you spending what you have now wisely...do you really NEED this or that? It may soung stupid to ask these questions if you are a young person thinking of this as a career...BUT...BUT...reality check! We are giving you what is happening to many of us: young , recent grad's and older of our situation and many who have NOT posted.....think benefits NOT hourly wage...HOURLY WAGE IS COMPETITIVE EVEN IF YOU HAVE "ALL" the skills.....comp, digital, L.A.....and...many don't get compensated for these additional skills now in "2009"....save and spend wisely! 23yr. vet GL! EVERYONE NEEDS IT NOW!!!! |

I'm all over the map with my emotions but I know I will settle down once I get into my education again. It has just about destroyed me trying to stay in this profession. I gave advice on here to someone else a few days ago to a RDH who felt stuck and I told her you are only stuck if you stay in hygiene. I need to practice what I preach. It's horrible to spend 15 years bettering yourself, continuing education, thinking you are at the top of your profession and then be setting at home daily thinking what am I going to do? I don't have a job?! I appreciate the support from everyone. My family doesn't understand. They say comments like, oh mom just go do something else. But it breaks me to have to do that. A hygienist is who I am. |
