jacky in Alberta said: You should take into consideration that private schools are very expensive $35,000 to $40,000 for tuition alone. A $60 per hour job is not the average wage and living in Calgary is very expensive. Think about if you really want to do hygiene. I am not trying to discourage you but if you hate coming to work everyday it would not be worth it. I got a degree first because I enjoyed the education and then I decided what I wanted as a job. Do not make your decision based on wages alone, many of my friends did now some are back in school and some hate going to work everyday. However, if you are a patient people person you should go for it there is a lot of job satisfaction for the right person. I agree with this statement. |

Hi Alvina, Tried your email but it was rejected. :(
It is easy to do much better than that, just about anywhere. If you are a CDHA member, you can contact the MDHA and ask for a list of who's hiring. You can also try contacting the MDA. Have you checked out WinnipegFreePress Online? Jobs are most numerous in the Saturday editions. I hope this helps a little. Good luck!! |

Hello. I run a temp agency called saulsolutions if you are interested you can e-mail me at saulsolutions@live.ca and let me know if you want full time or part time. If you do not want to go the temp route pick the area of the city you want to live in and put out resume's in that area and see what happens most hygienists will have work within a few weeks. My understanding is that wages run from $32 to $40 an hour. Hope this helps you out. Devona |

Hi, I will be sending my applications into colleges soon! I was reading some previous responses and the salary sounds awesome, especially to a 17 year old who cant buy herself a car lol. Anyway, what would the salary be for a hygienists right out of school in Toronto? Also, a college recommends taking a Pre-Health Science course due to the "Health rigors of the program"...do you guys recommend taking such a course? Or, is it just a money grab? I am kinda scared that I will have trouble in this course. I have taken a Co-op and learned a lot, I even got to preform some procedures like putting seals on teeth, with help of course. So I am not totally clueless. What do you recommend? Taking the Pre- Health science course, or trying to get straight in( if i can)? Also i do pretty good in school 70's to high 80 or sometimes 90's. THANKS!!! |

Hi Nada, how long have you been working in Calgary for? I am a new grad in Toronto and am wondering if I should contact an agency as a start or should I physically go to to Calgary and hunt for a full time there? Or is there any other way like applying directly from Toronto? Also is there a difference in salary for a new grad? Appreciate your help. |

But how about job availability. Is there a lot of compitition in Edminton? How would it be for a new grad if I am interested to apply there and how could I go about finding a job (how could I apply for one)? and don't mind me asking one more question. How is the cost of living there compared to Toronto specially for a family of four? appreciate your response. |

For a new grad in Edmonton usually you are looking between $48-$52/hour, I believe its around the same if you go with a temp agency as well. There are a lot of job opportunities here in Edmonton, look in the local paper (Edmonton journal) |

Hello everyone. I live in the US and my family and I want to head on up to Canada here in the next few years. I plan on being finished with Hygiene school in 2.5 years and want to move up there after that. Looks like the market is good up there for hygienist too. The pay sounds about the same as it does here - between 40-50 or 33% commission depending on where you go. I don't know where we would live in Canada. We are keeping our options open for now but I hear Calgary is the place to go. We live about 30 minutes from Washington DC and want to move somewhere where it is family oriented not so job oriented. We want a house and a yard and nice neighbors and we just don't have that here. Our traffic is HORRIBLE..It takes about 40-minutes to drive 10 miles.. The cost of living is crazy too. We live in a 1,000 square foot apartment and are paying $1,110 per month(and that is cheap!). So anyways...we want out of here. Any suggestions? And if I finished my schooling here, do you know if I could just take my boards there or would I have to take classes as well? We are able to do local anesthesia here too. Can you do that in Canada? Thanks so much....

I believe you have take a test to make sure you are qualified up to the Canadian standards. You can find the exact information on this on the internet. No anesthesia, dentists do. And, "Canadian food" haha, not sure what that is. However, I have visited the states many times and have noticed few differences in the food. The food here is much healthier: Soda sizes are smaller, food portions are smaller (Even at fast food, and fine restaurants. At Tim Hortons in the states, the small is our medium and the large is our extra large. Also, you will find the cost of living is not that cheap either. Things in Canada are very expensive compared to the states. For example, I was about to buy a new car for 30,000 and when I went to the states (Exact same car 08, so no damage) was being sold for 18,000. The cost of living also is different province to province. Alberta has a high cost of living. I live in Ontario, about 2 hours from Toronto. I currently live in a house that is around 1600sqr feet bungalow (not counting basement) and would easily sell for 360,000, in a small town with a large yard and a nice subdivision. **also you will find a recycling bin everywhere ( when I go to the USA I cringe every time I throw my plastic water bottle in the garbage) |

Michelle in Winnipeg, Manitoba 45 months ago |
Actually local anaesthesia is administered by dental hygienists in at least a few provinces, including BC, Alberta and Manitoba. Saskatchewan too, I believe. Calgary is a great city with a very high DH wage, but the
In terms of qualifications, there is a Canadian Board exam and I believe passing that is all that's required to practice in Canada. Check with the CDHA to be sure. Good luck! Hope this helps. |

I am a self-emplyed dental hygienist who currently gets paid 40% commission for xrays, exams (when I help the dentist), probing, scaling, polish and fl2. I am generally an exception to the rule because most dentists I have worked for in the past have paid only hourly wage depending on experience. My wage exceeds $200,000 a year but I work longer days and I work for a generous employer. It is nice to be self-employed because I save a ton in taxes but for the most part I have found we are at the mercy of the dentist and what they are willing to pay. Hope this helps. |

Karen in Edmonton, Alberta said: Hi Andrea, Hi Karen, I only have 8 years experience but have worked for a couple of very good periodontists in the city. I learned more in the four years that I worked at these practices than I had working anywhere else. The mentorship from other hygienists that had 18 years+ experience was phenomonal. They pushed me to a new level of hygiene that is difficult to get working in private practice. I currently work for immigrant dentists that have a majority of immigrants and the dental I.Q. is low. They rely on my experience to help maintain a higher level of hygiene and if I cannot control the disease, I will suggest they be referred out. Perio patients number in the 80-85% range at this practice. (Sorry for the long answer) |

Hi, when I was making an horly wage, I was being paid $55 to $60/hr. Commission will vary according to office - between 30-40% and every office charges different fees because there is no set fee guide like there is in Ontario. It's common to see many offices charge $60.00 for 1 unit of scaling in Calgary. On an average day I will take home in commission between $750 to $950 a day. Keep in mind though that I work longer hours and I work weekends - including some Sundays! Hope this helps, Andrea. |

And according to KDM temp agency the market for hygienists is quite slow now because so many hygienists are moving in to Calgary. Is this true?
