Tracy, Ontario can be a tough place to find a job and I did not mean to offend you but if you feel you are not getting what you deserve then find another job that will make you happy...just a thought. |

Thanks Larry...I do have a job where I am happy and I was just posting TRYING to help a fellow Hygienist with a question they posted. Apparently Sacha has nothing better to do with her time than be a nuisance. |

Everyone needs to settle down! We are way off topic here. Tracy, why do you have to turn everything into an argument?? You are giving off a lot of negative energy. Dental hygiene is a profession for happy, bubbly people.. so fit in or get out. Do what makes you happy! :) Anyway, back on topic. I just moved to Calgary about a month ago and I'm interested in the union that you guys were talking about earlier... meetings and helping each other out and stuff. Can someone let me know how I can get involved? |

I am NOT the one who went OFF topic.... |

Thats a great idea! We are the ones that pay the CRDHA. Maybe we could all petition. If we all got together and wrote letters to our provincial hygiene association. We could petition to no longer support the CRDHA unless a cap is placed on the number of DH licenses that are handed out. I am going to check with a bunch of the other girls. I think you are onto something here..... |
|
Anonymous 43 months ago |
I was just talking to RDH who's been in practice for 20 years - they have tried writing petitions/letters to provincial associations in the past but nothing happened. So what she's urging us to do is to write letters to CDHO - b/c CDHO is the regulatory body - who can take definitive action, where as provincial bodies can't really do much. The abovementioned RDH suggest that we write letters saying that we are graduates f/ accredited colleges & universities, and having hard time gettings jobs because of private school girls...why are we paying fees when we can't find work? |

Hi, I'm a new grad from Toronto. I would like to express my thoughts about what I have read in here. In simple words,I don't think it's a fare game to close the door on the new grads just because the market is over-flowing with hygienists. Put into consideration the effort and money they have put into this and maybe you would realise they deserve a chance like you(practicing RDHs). After all they would not be obtaining a license unless they go through the hard work that all RDH's have gone through and I'm sure you all know exactly what I am talking about. The number is increasing every year just like any other profession (in other words that is obviously expected), and like mentioned previously dental hygiene is not for everyone so the ones who are in it for the big bucks might not last for long. I do not mean to offened anyone, but I'm also worried about my future as a new grad and personally speaking I got into this after years of searching for "the right career" for myself and I find myself in dental hygiene and I beleive I deserve a chance. |
|
Bilal in Peace River, Alberta 43 months ago |
To Sila and whome ever willing to become a dental hygienist, we are not intending to take your right in becoming a registered and active member in the dental hygienie profession. we are just talking about protecting this profession from the overflowing numbers of graduates every year..

Sadly enough, the reality is that dentists tolerate hygienists and hygienists tolerate dentists. It is a symbiotic relationship in that each is interdependant on the other. Dental hygiene is the foundation of any good practice but dentists are starting to feel as though hygiene is taking a larger piece of the pie than they would like to share. As we have read before, it is the dentists who are lobying to open new programs to allow more hygienists into the workplace. Supply and demand in the world of hygiene is starting to shift in favor of dentists. The only dentist I have ever worked for that has truly valued my opinion and my output has been a periodontist. That being said, they are also some of the cheaper employers. I do agree that job security and benefits are entitlements to all good workers and we need to look into this further. I will do some research and get back to the Forum... |

hey larry whats the situation with hygienist in calgary? has the demand decreased dramatically? and would it easy for males in this career to obtain a job? |
|
Sara in Calgary, Alberta 43 months ago |
TRUE! Why are we paying fees when we can't find work?! Good to know. You are very informative. Thank you for the information. |
|
Jeff jackonson in Edmonton, Alberta 43 months ago |
sara are u able to find a job in calgary easily? |
|
Kate in Calgary, Alberta 43 months ago |
I'm finding it difficult to find full-time work in Calgary. I moved here a month ago and I have been doing a lot of part-time and temping. Still searching for something full-time, so I don't have to be all over the place! :( |
|
Jeff jackonson in Edmonton, Alberta 43 months ago |
really wow. hows the pay? |
|
Kate in Calgary, Alberta 43 months ago |
Roughly $55/hr for new grads. |
|
Jeff jackonson in Edmonton, Alberta 43 months ago |
really but with like so many hygienist coming from ontario i heard that its decreasing. like it wasn't as what it use to be. and is it hard for males to get a job as well. i heard from ppl some dentist dont want males. i am getting all these mixed information |
|
Kate in Calgary, Alberta 43 months ago |
I moved here expecting at least $60 an hour.. so $55 is even a little bit disappointing to me. I'm not sure whether it would be less or more difficult for a male looking for a job. I guess it just depends on the dentist, right? ;) Are you currently working in Edmonton?? What's the situation like there for DH's?? |
|
Jeff jackonson in Edmonton, Alberta 43 months ago |
i am actually still in school like i am from calgary. but from what i heard its a bit better than calgary if not the same like there was an ad for 55$ an hour but it didnt specify full-tiime or part-time. Where are u from originally? |
|
Sara in Calgary, Alberta 43 months ago |
Yes, so far I have found it easy to get employment. I earn $65.00 per hour. I also communicate with a large group of hygienists in Calgary. We get together to discuss wages and working conditions. Its great. It helps us all. We strive to take home what we deserve. Which is 40-45% of production. Just as the associates earn. We aren't there yet. But we are getting closer. We hope the new grads are ambitious and financially conscious. We all have to work together. I am very impressed with this site, I see there are many smart hygienists out there with some great ideas! |

Sara in Calgary, Alberta 43 months ago |
In Calgary, experience doesn't matter. They don't give patients a discount if their hygienist has less experience. You don't pay more for a filling done by a 70 year old dentist, than you do from a dentist with 5 years experience. I would calculate what your production is daily and then determine 40% of that. That will let you know what is rightfully yours. I understand you may not be getting paid that, but its a good idea to have a benchmark. Did you know associates get 10% of every hygiene patient you see. Plus 40% of the recall and X-rays. Why??? They didn't do any of the scaling, polish or fluoride..or even take the X-rays!! And did you know that they get paid 40% of scaling, polish and fluoride if they do a hygiene appointment. Most clinics are able to pay this and still profit nicely. |

Hi Sara, I graduated in May and am working full time in Edmonton right now for $48/hour. My employee is quite keen on the idea that because i'm a new graduate I do not have enough experience to get paid more. I am in disbelief that the dentists do indeed get 40% of radiographs for simply looking at them. |

I don't know if you guys are aware of this, but recently a complaint & law-suit was filed against a dentist in Ontario because this dentist allowed his dental assistant to scale. All he got was a warning, and no charges. The bar has been lowered so much that even DA scales, and DA & DDS can get away with this - unacceptable!!
|
|
Vivien in Calgary, Alberta 43 months ago |
I work at two different Calgary offices and in both practices there are dental assistants who scale teeth. In one office an assistant will even attempt root planing! The problem is that in one office that I curretnly work at I complained to the CRDHA and they asked me to get them as much information as I could so they could present a case to their lawyer and told me that I would have to appear in court and that I would probably be fired because the lawyer for the dentist would disclose my name. My own association would hang me out to dry and would not protect me. That is really scary. I vowed that I would never say anything again. I have too much to lose. Dentists are looked at as Gods and support staff is there to kiss dentist ass! |

shelly in Calgary, Alberta said: KDM is the best agency to temp for. Right now you can temp for $58-$60 per hour in Calgary. There is no difference in pay according to experience. Patients do not get a discount on their hygiene appointment if their hygienist is less experienced. They pay the same for a unit of scaling whether their hygienist has 10 years experience or 1. Calgary Dental Placement Service is a great temping agency in Calgary, I have used their service for over 10 years and have always been able to get placed with them. Your experience does matter in how much you are paid as new grads do not have the same level of technical experience as hygienists with many years of experience, however what is charged by the dental office does not change according to the hygienists' experience. |

So, if a dental hygienist has less experience the dentist they work for gets an extra holiday to Mexico. That makes sense. |

Mary in Calgary, Alberta said: So, if a dental hygienist has less experience the dentist they work for gets an extra holiday to Mexico. That makes sense. No Mary, They get a house in the Hamptons and a great new speed boat. I agree with you. I have worked with hygienists who spend 15 minutes with each patient and they are a disgrace to the profession. New grads should be getting a minimum of 55/hr. No one is there to hold their hand. They are licenced and accountable. |
|
Anonymous in Calgary, Alberta 43 months ago |
Anonymous in Calgary, Alberta said: No Mary, I believe Mary was referring to the dentist being the recipient of an extra holiday to Mexico. I do agree that hygienists should be properly compensated as they are responsible for helping their patients improve and sustain a healthy oral system, a system that influences the overall health of the patient. |

Kate in Calgary, Alberta said: Roughly $55/hr for new grads. For 10 years experience, good luck to find a job for 50/hr. Zero job for dental hygienist on newspaper for the whole month. When I took 2 week holiday last month, several hygienists are willing to work for less than 50/hr and they are available to work for only 1 or 2 hours a day (yes 1 or 2 hours) as the office required. Asked them, they said: "I need the money".

anonymous in Calgary, Alberta 43 months ago |
I agree with Cara, I have a job but have been looking for a new one since May. There has been bascially nothing and the chance of getting any temping (if you aren't one of their reg full time temps) is very slight. I have over 8 years experience and find that it is really working against me. They first thing they say when you go in for an interview is that they have a ton of resumes because they are wanting you to decrease your rate and take crappy hours. I am very confused with our association. They pushed for a Degree program in Dental Hygiene but now readily accept those who have gone to private instutitions, kinda contradicts all they have done to help promote our profession... |
|
Anne-Marie in Whitby, Ontario 43 months ago |
Yes what happened to the degree program? we were supposed to be getting less graduates not more. It is embarrasing to hear about 18 month programs straight out of high school. No wonder wages are going down. |
