I can relate to the both of you about a job in Georgia but the thing i did to get a job was going down the phone book. I started out by stopping by the offices that were close to me. Than I started faxing. I had 2 job since I been in Augusta,GA. The thing about Georgia you have to know somebody.I didn't know anybody so I used the yellow page
I moved from St. Louis, MO in March of 2009. I have 9yrs of exp. and I'm also black. the other thing is there looking for RDH with exp. I'm unsure of your exp.

We are in a recession. Jobs are slim everywhere. I've been on all those sites. I'm licensed in Ga too and can't find a job there either. I was going to move there 2 yrs ago but couldn't sell my home. I had job offers all over the place then. Now it's harder if you are out of state. I have been sending resumes in Atl since Feb this yr and Va since Nov. It's just bad all over. The only reason I'm on the forum all the time is because I'm looking for a job. Everything is online these days. It's funny, I'm trying to find a hyg job so I can go back to school to switch careers. I don't want to rely on working for someone else for income.

Golden in Winder, Georgia said: I am a hygienist in Atlanta...Are you familiar with the website... www.dentalpost.net
There should be several postings on this website, i checked it yesterday. Also, you can go thru DPS, INC- a dental staffing agency that will help you find temporary or full time work. If those fail, start calling offices to ask if they are hiring- you might get lucky when they tell you to fax over your resume. Another option is to send out your resume with a cover letter to all offices in your area telling them you will temp when their hygienist is out of the office! Check AJCJOBS.com as well. good luck!

thank you so much I'ave used dentalpost.net but this DPS, INC would you have a e-mail address or phone number. I will try AJCJOBS.com. Thank you again

Have you tryed working for a Public Health center most of them pay well an they offer alot. I worked for a Public Health center in St. Louis, MO an it was great I made 70,000 a yr. and vac, sick pay, 401k, yrly rise one dollar or more, CE paid by the health center as well as license renewal. people don't under stand that these Health care centers are great an one other thing they paid back my student loan with one condition I give them two yr. go to this websit nhsc.bhpr.hrsa.gov and look at there job opening also I didn't get any call back when sent my resume. I did a cover letter letting them know that have relocated like I was already In augusta,GA. don't tell them you will be relocating make it as if your already in town. Also that webite address is good for other careers just take a look at it. I hope this will help. And so that you know I left that great job because I got married. Hygiene can be great.

Thanks. Everyone tells me to use a address where the job is. I was trying to be honest but hell I need a job. I did get one call back but they wanted me to do an interview that day to work the next. I went from NY to VA with no job and I was on pins and needles looking for a job. Luckly I got a job in 2wks. Not sure it will happen in this economy. I do know people there so maybe I'll try it. I'm not having any luck in VA.

I still haven't found nothing yet. Some places just email you instead of calling you. I hate that. Does anybody know anymore names of temp agencies. I'll be in Atl next week and want to set some things up.

Still no luck in Duluth, Georgia

I have been looking for a second part time or full time job for a year now in GA. I recently sent out resumes and business cards to local offices again. They all say the same thing, "Not Hiring". I tell them I can temp also but only get one office who calls me now and again for that. I only work 2 days a week and no benefits. I am with 2 temp agencies and never get work except once in a blue moon. One temp agency said they just don't have the business. I have 4 years of experience and have worked in prophy mills and private offices. This economy is crazy.

Hi Still, Glad to hear you "have" 2 days of work a week...it's something, I only have 2, 1/2 days , temping on my own to help out 2 offices with PG, R.D.H.'s. So.....2 "set" days are GREAT! Keep circulating your resumes's, take a card and write info. on them, leave a business card.....Do they have a Dental Convention in GA? We have one in MA called "Yankee Dental Congress" at the end of January....I'll probably be looking at alot of nametags and bring some of my business cards....good to carry these, a few in your purse....you never know! Keep at it, sometimes you can be in the right place at the right time! GL Exp

I graduated almost 5 months ago now and still haven't worked. This is very frustrating and I get the same responses that you get. But in addition, I get frowned upon for not having the years of experience that is being sought in the few ads that are posted. Time is passing so quickly and I am wondering will this get better soon.

You have my sympathy. I have 3 RDH licenses. When I graduated I got a license in that state then I moved immediately up north and had to wait a year until I could work due to finding a board patient and when the boards were being taken. It was rough and I was extremely slow but once you start working you will get the hang of it. I wish you the best!

Dentalpost.net- my Dr. said she got 400 responses just on that site and a ton more on others. She was overwhelmed.

Thank you so much for your reply. Yes, we had a dental convention called the Hinman several months ago. Many of the classes we attended had almost no dentists. They were usually assistants or RDH's so I didn't have much luck. The dentists I did see and looked on their nametags were from out of town or way out in the country. I did look and so did my co-workers. We tried...I'll keep looking!

I come to a conclusion that when you go to school, they want to convince people that dental hygienist is a hot job. That is not true at all. I hear a lot of hygienists who are struggling to find a job. It is not fair because we rely on dentists to employ us but there are so many dentists who do not want to employ a hygienist because they use there dental assistant to do the job. I just moved here in Mississippi and there's so many dentist who do there own cleaning.

Welcome to the world of dental hygiene. Four years ago I was on this forum---stressing the fact that there were way too many DH schools opening up all over the USA and Canada and that there would be an absolute FLOODING of the market with 'quick 16 months grads out of substandard DH programs set up specifically to MAKE MONEY'......this has ALL OCCURRED!! We have way too many DHs in all the provinces and all the states and new DH schools keep opening up....it's become a JOKE....and as a result....I, who have been a dental hygienist for 30 years WILL NO LONGER CALL IT A PROFESSION....it is merely a "trade".....like hairstyling....and doing nails..... You need minimal smarts to 'get into a 16 month program'......and since BRAINS are not necessarily "required for admittance" anymore.....it is NO LONGER A PROFESSION!!!!!
This is very sad......

^ Sadly have to agree with you one hundred percent. But I'm glad to see other long term hygienists seeing the situation for what it is.

It's a job and a trade, NOT a profession.

How are you 30 year? I see you and Exp., Rdh4 and Suzanne still trying to relay the same message over and over again. Hopefully, thanks to all of your persistance, some people are really hearing what you're saying.

But the news certainly isn't good.

I've, through some deity, am now working with a First Nations Health Unit, and loving it. Pay is not great, but I do have benefits.

I was a bit hesitant to post this as it may give others hope in a very hopeless situation.

Just to clarify - I've been a hygienist for 15 years, and know a lot of people, and through word of mouth, was able to find this gem. It was extrememly difficult, and a once in a lifetime opportunity. I've been VERY lucky.

So, please, people, continue to listen to 30 yr. vet, Exp., Suzanne, and all the others that tell you to stay out of dental hygiene. It is a dead end for 99% of you, before you even begin!

Hey Waterbug, Glad to hear you have found a position...is it as a DH? What benefits and how did you come to a decent employer? Wondered where you were...hope you have good holidays...and keep in touch on here. I actually answered a "13" yr. old who thinks she has a passion for DH and has researched the field....techie research and she's only 13...who really knows what they want at that age or even 18yrs....quick make a decision that will effect you for the next few years! "13"....anyway, thanks for your support and telling it like it is. I think "we" collectively have reached some....and maybe they'll have a brighter future in another field where they are able to obtain employment with benefits and not have to vye for work in a backstabbing environment...sadly, it has come to this for many.....take care. Hi Exp. Yes, I read your post to the 13 year old. I know that kids are pushed into thinking about what they're going to do as a career very early, but that's just ridiculous. Wonder where the pressure is coming from. She could hardly know that her passion is hygiene.

Yes, it is DH, and again, I was very lucky. Right time, right place, right people. The position is a combo of community outreach and hygiene. The benefits include pension, dental, long term disability, vision..and I don't know what else. I need to repeat...I was VERY lucky. And it took me 8 months of thinking outside the box to be given this opportunity. I worked for it...it didn't come to me.

I wish you well Exp. I hope you find what you deserve.

Maybe in 2011, there will be more work??? Hope so...keep in touch to let us know how you and the office you are in, are, in this and the new year :-). 24yr VET/EXP

Medical College of GA. graduates every year with hygienists in Augusta,Ga. and I have 15 years of experience. I am so frustrated. I left a job in thomson,ga. for a job close to home with more hours and my father died last year and they had no consideration. I was fired 4 days after my father's cremation. How much colder can you get to that with these cold harded stupid dentists?

Sorry to hear of such inconsiderate, childish, unspeakable behavior of a Dentist (or is it also a conglomerate/corporate practice)? Did you seek out a lawyer to see if you could sue them....I think there must be something that can be done to this disgusting practice. Are you able to go back to the other office? GL on a lawsuit....it's worth looking into for sanity sake.

I was let go because the office manager had a friend, a new grad who was looking for a job, and who was willing to work for 25% less per hour that I was. What's the end result? The dentist makes more money, I'm absolutely devastated and depressed that I'm out of a job, and do you think those savings are passed on to the patients? It's a crummy business.

I agree. Dental hygiene has become a very unemployable profession. I have worked as a dental hygienist for 13 yrs. I have watch my salary/ income go from 54,000 to 21,000. Dentist are doing there own cleaning because they want to pay the hygienist the same as the assistant. The economy has effected everyone. The dental hygiene supply is available but there is not a demand for dental hygienists. Dentist have been forced to accept capitated reimbursements. In managed care offices a hygienist will have to see 3 patient in and hour to make a profit. Yes its all about profit. We have to work on quantity and not quality. This sucks!!!!!!!!
