Hi, I just moved to North Carolina from MI. I have been looking on line and in the news paper for jobs. I have sent out many resumes to all the dental offices in my surrounding areas and even joined a job placement agency. Is there something I am missing? I have been a hygienist for 7 years. Do I have to know someone to get in the door? Any suggestions?

Hi Cheryl,

Im a foreign trained dentist with a Bachelors degree.

Im planning to pursue my career as a dental hygienist.I have a few querries-

1.Exactly,what procedures do the dental hygienists perform?

2.What is the availability of jobs after completion of degree.

3.How much flexibility is there in the work schedules?

4.How much do the dental hygenists earn on an average?

As you are already in this profession and an experienced DH,I would highly appreciate your kind advice in this matter.

Thanks a lot.

Hi there!
I just moved back to Raleigh from Asheville (I was there for six months), and I found it difficult to land any temp work at all. I found that area to be much more saturated than Raleigh. Hoiwever, I did transition smoothly into a position with an office right off of Biltmore Ave. The name of the office is Carolina Dental Center. It is a Medicaid office, but I got the chance to work with children, which I like. The majority of the staff has been there for a long time and they are nice people! You may want to contact them this Summer to see what thier availablity is.

Good Luck to you!

Hi there!
I currently live in the Raleigh/ durham area and was going to move to Arizona two years ago for dental school. You will need to take your Western Regional Boards, this will certify you in about 11 or more states. You can go to this website: www.costoflivingwizard.com and you will be able to get a good idea of the pat scale there. Two years ago it figured that I would have about $8,000 more of disposable income per year based off of the comparison of real estate and pay scale. Good Luck!

I've been practicing dental hygiene in Raleigh for 22 years for the same practice. I left last August and have been temping ever since. I have found all my jobs by delivering my resume personally. Even if no job was advertised, I still handed out my resume. I have been called in to fill-in and then hired within a short time (days to weeks). I only delivered to offices that I had heard positive things about and then filled-in to see if I was compatable with office staff.

I am looking for my first dental hygiene job in Myrtle Beach, SC and I'm very discouraged. No one in this area is looking for hygienist (I've called every dentist in the phone book). The hygienists that I know around here are only working 2-3 days per week and hourly pay ranges from $16- $25 If you're experienced. Is the job market for dental hygiene good anywhere in South Carolina?

Hi
I have been looking for a dental hygienist job for 3months now, and i got no response. i look thru the ads, yellow book ,online. even the one that i faxed tooseem to be of no use. Iam just frustrated you know; Iam a great hygienist with 5years experience. Iam friendly and approchable. I have been temping for a while, but now even that is dry. I have a family that depends on me you know.
I guess right now I have to do whatever i can to survive with my 2yr old kind.
it sad to say; I love this profession, but its not enough anymore to takecare of your family. I guess I have to go back to school again, and learn something else that would be of use for my future. I guess in this field if you dont know anyone, or isnt sleeping with someone, the good and honest hard working person will be pass on.
right now most offices are looking for cheap labor.they dont take in account that you are a person too. you have responsibilty. you have to pay your bills, and at the same time live alittle you know.
p.s if you are caucasion, spanish are finding hard out there for a hygienist position, just think how hard it is for an african american. We dont even get get thru the door. At least, you all have a better chance of getting a good paying jobs.

Is anyone hiring in NC for RDHs?!
I heard that NC has added so many new hygiene schools and with everyont just graduating in May, they don't have somewhere to put all of us!! However, they are using up DA's like crazy!

How are we supposed to find permanent full-time work?!

Hi Megan,
Recently I left a full time hygiene position in a Medicaid office because of our practice philosophy differences, the 15" per patient pace was more than I could handle. I expected to stay busy with temp work, but have had no offers so far. The temp agency rep said that the hygiene job market in Raleigh is flooded because there are so many schools in NC. But your comment about "using up DA's like crazy" supports my idea that more Drs are working without an RDH, by scaling during the exam and letting the DAIIs finish the prophy with a polish,fl and OH instructions. Yes, it is legal for DAs to do supragingival plaque removal. What about perio patients??? I have worked with Drs. who do perio scales in half the time it takes me. What do they need to pay a hygienist for?

About that need for hygienists in the Hertford, NC area. What's that area like to live in.. housing costs.. salaries, beach, etc?? I just may like to move there.. I could do that.

Also, YES, the market is flooded in the Charlotte area too. I work 3 days, but have needed to add that 4th day for the last 3 years and haven't been able to get hired. Why?? Probably, some age discrimination.. I'm 53, a very young 53, but I think many dentists are intimidated by a seasoned hygienist, preferring young women they may pay less or feel more in charge of. A temp agent agrees with this.
There are too many schools here; these schools were started by dentists. My theory: (and confirmed by the dean at a hygiene school) It's about bringing the salary of hygienists down. There is also a shortage of Dentists in NC.

My experience is that you definitely have to have an "in" to get a job. That's how I got the one I have. Having years of experience in hygiene is no advantage, it seems. In fact, I'm sad to say that finding a job where hygiene is appreciated is rare. I don't consider 10-15 patients a day even sound practice. Needs of the patient are surely being overlooked. I've seen hundreds of pts. with undiagnosed perio, and supervised neglect. I work in a very good environment, comparably speaking, seeing 8 patients/day, but I have to "fight" for that standard to be maintained.
My suggestion: For any young woman going into hygiene.. Aim for a BS degree only. You can go to grad school and change your career if desired. OR, get a hygiene degree, work a couple years. Then go back and complete a BS in a related (health) field for future security.

I thought something was wrong with me. There isn't. And there's nothing wrong with you, either. The need for hygienists is just not what it used to be when I could be very selective and still get the job I wanted.
I'm doing more networking than ever, as I've probably faxed out over 300 resumes w/ no response. I wish you all the best.

Hertford is a small town in NE NC about an hour from Norfolk (Tidewater) VA and one hour from NC's beautiful OBX. I have no idea what rent is although I do know that our new RDH is renting a studio apt in Edenton and she pays around 600 a month. She is just out of UNC CH and is doing very very well. Salaries for just out of school are 30 per hour; experienced pay is 35 and negotiable somewhat.

I am sorry that you are having such a hard time. There are three dentists, maybe four looking for RDHs. We do a lot of perio and RDH see patients every hour; more if sc/rp. It would never occur to me to hire someone who is just out of school due to keeping pay down. A good hyg takes care of the patient if they have perio disease; that's her job, she/he also makes the dr produces a lot for the doc if she is an excellent hyg and a good clinician.

Is it "legal" to put my email address on this?? Someone let me know.

Hey everyone. First let me say that I think it is wonderful that this forum is available. I have just moved home to NC after traveling the country and living in Utah. I have been searching for jobs in the Asheville or Wilmington areas with no luck. I am more than a bit discouraged that these areas do not offer a temporary agency for Dental hygienists. I am looking for a full-time position and would be grateful for any help. Thank you:)

Hi, I ran across this forum by accident and I thought I'd reply. I am a 2006 grad. from Hickory and yes, the job market is extremely tight. I work part-time M and W in Stanly (Gaston County), and do occasional fill-in. There is not an easy answer for this situation. My best advice, sign up with the dent. temps in your area and keep contacting them. I do fill-in in my area without them, but I also use the Charlotte temp agency. I filled-in one day this week in Charlotte (1hr 20min away), and at the end of the hectic day I received almost $300. I know it's a long drive, but I try to focus only on the benefits. I had to get up at 4:30, leave before 6am, got lost, my first patient was supposed to be at 7:30 but I was 10 min late on an already ridiculous 40min schedule. I called them and told them to have my patient in my chair and take their x-rays and I would be there asap. I literally ran in the back door, threw my stuff over the counter, asked where my room was, rushed in and began work. THIS IS NOT WHAT I ENJOY! But, I kept a good attitude and even though it was rough, it evened out a few hours a later and everyone was very happy with me. The patients received good care, the office didn't have to cancel, and I got paid. I then had to be at school at 6pm and didn't get back home until 11pm, only to get up and go back to work the next day. Point being, to me, it was worth it.

I really needed the money and you never know what doors it can open. They may know someone in your area who is looking, but not advertising. I know you may not be able to do the long drives several days a week, but maybe consider doing one. Other than that, I don't know of anything. Most of my class is working except one. She has been unable to land a job. The new grads are also struggling and from what I here some are doing fill-in. I assume it's a problem everywhere. Hang in there, attend local meetings, and pray. Also, keep checking websites in your area for job listings. Sometimes they do pop up. Sincerely, Olivia, RDH (This says I'm from Casar but I'm not, I'm from Hickory)

I don't think it is legal for DA's to do so in NC. They are NOT allowed to do ANY scaling of any kind. Visit the NC dental board website for a list of DA job descriptions. Whoever is doing that is doing it illegally.

Oh, maybe you are just saying they can remove plaque, then yes. I know there are offices who do things illegally and I am sure they are having them scale among other things.

Yes, it is difficult to land a job as a dental hygienist in Florida too. I faxed so many resume out (55 to be exact)with no response. I truly believe that many states are saturated with dental hygienist. There are about 6 school that offer dental hygiene program in FL. And 3 of them are within an hour of each other.

Yes, it is very tough out there for us. From what I heard they are going to let dental assistant scale pretty soon in Fl so, where will us dental hygienist be???????????????

The future? Hummmmmmmmmmmmm...............

When I graduated last year, I sent out 250 resumes and only had a few interviews. I feel your frustration. As far as the DA situation goes, see if you can get involved in your local association or whatever and help fight back. This in not only bad for RDH's, but bad for patients. Have you contacted your local hygiene schools to see if they have any job listings?
