The market is really flooded. There's too many dental hygiene schools in NC. That's why I moved to SC after I graduated. I looked for six months. Sorry! Good luck. |

Well I am a RDA in Tn for 6 yrs now.. I love it the more you work and the more experience you get, the more money you will make. I left Assisting at $19/hr... You have to keep your head up and get in there and show them that just because your new does not mean that you are not a fast learner! I see ads looking for people without the experience that are willing to train. Keep your head up and it will pay off! |

Morgan LaPierre in Wilmington, North Carolina said: Hello Everyone! I just moved to Wilmington two months ago and just recently received my NC state dental hygiene license. I have been going around to all the dentists in the area and handing out my resume. I really want to get into one office to do full time work or even a couple different offices working part time in all the offices. I would love some advice on what to do. I know the market is saturated with hygienist but I would do anything for a job! If anyone has any tips please let me know! I may also have to do some temping while waiting to find an office that needs a "permanent" hygienist. I have never done temping before so if anyone has an idea what temps make these days I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks so much for your help! I am currently licensed in CT and am thinking of moving to north carolina within the next year. Did you move from a different state and have to take the CITA exam in order to get your NC license, or are you just starting out as a DH and received this license as your first? Im just trying to get some input on the entire process as i would have to take the different clinical exam in order to practice out of the northeast. Any advice or opinions would be helpful! Thanks! |

Hi CJ, By way of introduction I am an RDH in CT for 19 years and I love it. I am needing to relocate to SC within the next 3-4 months and am in the process of transfering my license by credentials to SC. I am noticing on the forum that most of the postings are for NC.

I truly believe that many states are saturated with dental hygienist. There are about 6 school that offer dental hygiene program in FL. And 3 of them are within an hour of each other. There are 18 dental hygiene programs in florida. |

hyg sucks in Richmond, Virginia 36 months ago |
Some hyg work 32 hrs and some work. Most places 32 is FT. I personally like no more then 36hrs (4 1/2 days). In Richmond alot of our offices are closed on Fri. In Upstate NY it was Thurs (golf day). I like a day off during the week because our schedule gets booked in advance and when you need a day you don't have to rearrange your sch. |

I wish all our advice really work. I have experts do my resume and Dental office managers look at my resume. I always dress up unless I work that day and the DDS can only see me after work. I did only at one interview and received the job. I conduct myself profesional at my interviews. I give up I am not a usually neg person. I am known for my smile but I haven't done that lately. I've been on 14 interviews so I know my resume can't be the problem. Sometimes I think it is my weight. You always hear she is cute and petite. Maybe I need to become aneroxic. I'm at my wits end. All I know is I need a job. I am the bread winner and when I don't work bills don't get paid. The worst part of it all is dealing with bill collectors. Sometimes it's easier to just give up. |

Thank youj AVF Hey, yeah the market is really flooded too because North Carolina decided to add more hygiene schools. I know at least 3 or 4 since I graduated and moved in 2004 and now that I am back looking for part-time it is rough. One thing that could help is making sure to be a member of the ADHA and NCDHA so we hygienist can have some say. |

hi, what is your opinion on arestin on a 4 mm pocket? and should they be on PM? |
|
jenny in Charlotte, North Carolina 32 months ago |
You can not place arestin in a 4mm pocket. It has to at least be a 5mm to even stay in the pocket. It can be placed at PM but insurance will need charting at least of the area your placing it. |

The solution is independent practice. Someone needs to get our plight out to Oprah so that SHE can find out how we can finally be allowed to open our own businesses nation-wide, without jumping through hoops. I don't want to sell fillings and crowns that are not needed anymore. "Yes doctor, I'm sorry I did not sell fillings to that patient who has zero decay history, no I do like working here sir...I will sell, sell, sell to anyone and everyone from now on." I want to have my own shop, like a hair dresser or tattoo artist/piercer are able to. They get to stab people in the eyebrow-nipple-nose, have their own sterilization equipment and trade shows but I can't scrape off tartar and polish teeth without endangering the public, according to dentists. Tell everyone you know about how we need to be released from slavery to dentists and their business practices. Let them clean their patients teeth from now on! Patient presents with a cavity in my office, I'd refer them a list of dentists, just like they refer people to specialists. In my shop everyone would get blood pressure screenings, full head and neck palpation exams and radiograph intervals set by the ADA and not the dentists need to make a boat payment! Unless you are blonde, thin and pretend to be single you are NOT going to get a full time job as a Hygienist, except on the rare occasion that the dentist is gay, a woman or actually follows ethical employment guidelines. These geeky guys never got the time of day from the 'cute chick' in high school and college and now get to hire them and only them and put his fantasy girl/s in his choice of uniform. One dentist I worked for made all his female staff wear above the knee skirts and short white lab coats! We have to do what they say or we do not work. Slavery! The public is in dire need of our services, and the economy needs us filling the empty strip malls with our own hygiene offices! Free the Registered Dental Hygienists |

Hello to all of the RDH's. I've been a RDH in AZ for 4 yrs. Laid off in 10/2009.(with the same company for 3 yrs) As of now. I've been working PT in a pediatric clinic and PT as a certified nursing assistant. Az's job market for RDH's is bad. Looking for a job here is like looking for a needle in a hay stack. (VERY SLIM) I really do enjoy working as a Dental Hygienist but, I've really considered going back to school for nursing.(RN) RN's will always be in high demand. I can say this because i've been working in the medical field since 1990 as as CNA also. My recommendation to everyone. If you can. Go back to school. Pursue a career change. You always have to have a back up plan. As i did, when i went to Hygiene school. Dont wait! thinking the market will turn around some time soon. My advise. Take this opportunity to go back to school.(if ur not working or working PT) I will pursue my career in nursing. GOOD LUCK!!!! <KEEP THE FAITH!!!> Dee 2010 |

Hey Denise,
I wish some of the news media people and new students would get a clue. the schools are out to make money on a career that is no longer able to support the hygienists already out there who are unemployed.I think the ADA is creating a false need for hygienists.(BUT the more RDH out there, the less the DDS have to pay the RDH; maybe that is the reason the ADA keeps promoting the need for RDHs) I was told that the ADHA has nothing to do with the market saturation or the interactions with the schools as far as asking them to slow down admissions. If anyone out there has more info on this saturated field and how to get the info out and correct this problem...share please.

It is sales/management related and can be done from the home. If you have an interest in finding out more, send me your contact info and I will fill you in with all the details. Otherwise, good luck in your job hunt. |

If you are brittle and weak enough to just have to have breaks at all, breaks on time, lunch at all, or even pee during the day - THEN HEALTH CARE IS PROBABLY NOT FOR YOU! And if you're a decent hygienist then you should be making a lot of money (and if you don't then you should insist on it - we HAVE to train the DDSs - we're making them a humongous profit!!) and you should get over your hives! Really it is a tough job if DONE CORRECTLY - and when the going gets tough, the tough get going, and the wusses fall to the wayside. I know, 40 years in dental industry, 28 years cleaning teeth.
And for goodness sake! Don't work with nasty ringworm! Do you have no sense at all?????

Hi, Have you done the following, not to say you haven't but: have resumes'and bus. cards on hand in your car...give yours if they would like it, take their card and write pertinent info of them...don't leave resumes' with "we don't need anyone" types, google all websites for medical/dental: indeed, simply hired, hotjobs: if these apply in your state...call temp ag's, etc....do you have any DA skills or willing to take training in DA? It could help you in the interim with offices and or temp ag's...GL It's very hard out there for many , myself included and I have 24yrs. of exp. and seen pretty much all types of practices...in 2010 and beyond I think the "1" office will be the RDH in the minority...because of the oversaturation...NOT any economy issues...and again, IT IS 'NOT', REPEAT, 'NOT' THE ECONOMY THAT IS CAUSING THE LACK OF WORK OR LITTLE WORK FOR US...and those too, who think their jobs are secure....be aware of your office staff, things can change, literally behind your back....GL in your efforts, hope what I've said was helpful... |

I really don't know what to do. It seems like a lot of the ads in the paper are for jobs in Charlotte or Raleigh, but very few in my area. It is very discouraging to have worked SOOO hard for this and have hardly any opportunities to work. I really love this career (so far). I decided when I graduated that I would not bulk send out resumes, because our teachers pointed out that it kind of does a disservice to us as hygienist, because it shows Dr.s how tight the market is for us. I have walked a good number of resumes into various offices, without luck. I'll keep trying, but my husband and I seriously thinking of moving to Maryland (where I grew up) because this state has such a bleak outlook. Does anyone know what the market is like in the No. VA, MD, DC area? I don't know if you ever found a job...just found this posting and considering a move to Charlotte, NC (just for a change of pace) but job outlook up here is pretty good in NOVA/DC/MD! I work in Faifax, VA parttime and make $48 an hour and fillin in temp occasionally with some old employers when I need some extra cash! But mind you, you wont find a townhome under $350K in a deceent neighborhood either! |
