RDH magazine: JOBS and SALARY...= reality...

So have those thinking of going into DH and spending the large sum of money to find NO WORK IN OUR FIELD = OVERSATURATED...read this issue? There are RDH's from each state, stating the situation of employment, from REAL RDH's in the field. Please think and listen to those in school worrying about the market that unfortunately is true, recent grad's STILL trying to gain experience and the seasoned VET's....we are giving you real info. not the lies the schools, govt/bls, online articles written by aynon. people that know NOTHING about our field. Medical = yes, Dental = NO work for RDH's...go with DA training = all the benefits that elude RDH's.

I'm with ya! There are no jobs on the east coast for hygienists! And most job openings seem to be 1 full day or less! Meaning you might be hired just to work 4-5 hours in 1 day (I have a job like that now). I would also recommend everyone who is interested in dentistry become either a dentist or assistant and skip hygiene school for now. I wish I had become a DA first because then I think dentists would be willing to hire me as a DA if I had experience. I am a RDH and I can't even get a DA interview because the dentists I think, all assume I will find a hygiene job soon and quit. Also most dentists I come in contact with have no clue about the bad hygiene market until they have a hygiene opening and are FLOODED with resumes. I had one dentist tell me he received resumes from out of state and THREW AWAY any resume that was not from a hygienist who lived in a nearby town. I lived nearby that's why they interviewed me but I still didn't get the job because they were going to interview many hygienists and pick 7 to do a working interview and then pick 1 person out of those 7!
It seems like when the offices find out the job market is bad they take their time finding a new hygienist and pick several to all do working interviews before finally picking a permanent hygienists for the 1 job opening.
I wish I had known how bad the job market was before going to college for DH. When I researched DH in 2006 I only noticed job outlooks like on the US job outlook handbook talking about how there is an expected need for more and more hygienists in the future. NOT true during a recession!
