i know some programs teach to the board exam--much like highschools have been guilty of teaching to the departmental exams to get more funding but that is not the the way you develop professionals. talk to recent grads of these schools and look at the experience they offer before choosing.

DH in Edmonton, Alberta said: Threatened no, disappointed that our profession has been reduced in education and respect yes. And yes, as a result of the private schools. Typical attitude of an office manager, probably married to the dentist too aren't you?
I find attitudes are usually reflective of the people around them-sounds like you bring out the best in your hygiene team!

re-read this post. Do you see how misguided so many of you are in your harsh judgments. How can we talk about professionalism and be so sarcastic and nasty to each other. Dental Hygiene is an amazing profession and we need to build it instead of tearing it down. Let's help each other!

okay..it may have been unfari to make my point on DH in Edmonton. I am just very disappointed with our lack of focus on what will build this profession. We seem so intent on complaining about what isn't going as well as we like rather than working together to solve things. i attended PD recently where the speaker talked with us about seeing the barriers to what we want and finding our own unique way to move through the barrier to achieve our goals. We can all build amazing careers in this field if we start working on effective collaborative solutions. I personally love what we do and I know i am making a difference and i can do more if i am able to honestly and respectfully talk with all of you about solutions and ideas. Whether you graduated from a private school, a diploma program or degree program you have something unique to offer to our profession and i know we can make a difference and build our profession to be a highly regarded and respected member of the health care community. BUT we have to work together and stop focussing on why we think we are disadvantaged. Well established profesions have a few things in common; one of those is that they bond within their own profession supporting each others efforts so that all are stronger.

That's funny some Accredited Programs have lower Pass Rates with the NDHCB then Unaccredited Programs. Public and Private.

GO AHEAD AND TAKE DENTAL HYGIENE AND DO NOT LISTEN TO COMMENTS HERE. DO YOUR OWN FACT FINDING. ALSO IF THE PROGRAM IS CRIMINAL EXPENSIVE DONT BE SUCKED IN.

Clinical instructors were good, but in my opinion, we didn't have the best theory instructors. I've heard a lot of negative stories about other schools as well and the best advice I can give is to choose the lesser of the evil (community colleges will still always be the best).

can u tell me what's the tution fee in total at CADH?

The people in your office are idiots. Hygienists are very competitive and the market has changed over the years. Before, you didn't have many options in terms of what school you go to. Now, you have several. This pisses many hygienists off because it threatens their profession somewhat. It sometimes forces them to have to accept lower pay. Dentists can now hire someone fresh out of school for 25 dollars per hour. I was a dental assistant for 10 years and now I'm about to do dental hygiene. I can tell you that most dentists don't care about where you went to school, provided you can do the work and are willing to accept a pay rate within whatever range they're offering. I'm well aware of the fact that Ontario's saturated. Ontario has the majority of hygienist's in Canada. Be prepared to leave the city if necessary. Become self initiated/regulated and work for yourself. Go to nursing homes, people's homes, institutions, remote areas, etc. Don't be discouraged, be happy you're working. Screw your coworkers, they don't pay your bills. Hygiene is a great profession, its' just changed, so now we have to adapt. Still, you can make great money. You may just have to be a little more innovative.

One more thing to add to the above comment that everyone seems to forget to mention. Your investment in this profession will be significant I assume. Not every individual can come up with 30 000 or 40 000 dollars from their savings. Make sure that you are prepared not to make a single penny your first year after graduation. Also working during school will be a challenge, so assume that you won't have time to work. So before making such investment and in case you have any dependants please think twice before putting them and yourself into a financial jeopardy. Your return on investment will meet its expectation in about 2-3 years these days ( including inflation and banks interest rate ). Good luck with any decision you will make.

Hi there,

I am currently in Toronto atending Dental hygiene school here. I can tell you from experience that you will not get into a public college coming from out of province, you must attended a private school. Secondly there is only 1 school I know of that accepts government funding as payments which is the one I am attending. Oxford College. I DO NOT recommend you apply to this school if at all possible. Administration is very shady, teachers gossip about students, and hold grudges. The fiancial office is very shifty and is very hard to deal with and try to confuse you constantly. DO NOT APPLY TO OXFORD COLLEGE!!! Just make sure that the school your applying to is accredited!

Whatever you do make sure you pick an ACCREDITED DENTAL HYGIENE PROGRAM. make sure to ask that they are accredited. the CDHA is working to shut down the private colleges - they aren't accredited. Employers want someone coming from an accredited program... and trust me it's hard enough to find a job after you graduate..

NOT ALL private colleges are unacredited. Some ARE ACCREDITED. just make sure you physically SEE the certificate or check the CDAC website and see if they are before you apply

RDH=really desperate hygienist in Toronto, Ontario

Honestly, for those who are reading this post wondering if this is a good career to get into, DO NOT DO IT!!! I graduated from George Brown 3 years ago with honours, passed the board exam right away and am only working half a day per week. There are no jobs. If you don't get into George Brown, Durham, or Fenshaw, don't go to private school. I'm one of the few girls that are still trying to get something from my graduating class.

I got so upset when I looked up this profession from a new student perspective and it still says that it's in high demand and it will be in even higher demand. IT IS NOT TRUE!!! Many people don't get insurance anymore so don't pay to get their cleanings, they don't realize just how important it is. There are so many private school pumping us out that there is a MAJOR overflow of us on the market.

A lot of dentists don't even use hygienists and do the cleanings themselves to save on costs. Don't expect to be paid $30 or up as most dentists are trying to pay us around $25 which is DISGUSTING!!!! I have handed out thousands of resumes over the last 3 years and I have been disappointed so many times. Just recently I got another day and after about 4 weeks they told me that they just didn't have the clientele to keep me and let me go. This is what's happening to all of us that didn't graduate 6-7 years ago.

I know you don't want to hear about this, you need to know what you're getting yourself into when you graduate. I'm going back to school to get my BSc because I know this career is going to take me nowhere:(

CANADIAN ACADEMY OF DENTAL HYGIENE (CADH) in missisuaga ontario.1 month ago i found many schools, i looked mainly for 18-20 month programs, the CADH stood out to me for a few reasons... i wrote my entrance exam 2 weeks ago and "passed" then i had a review TODAY and well a few hours later i got an email saying i am being offered a seat for the october 2012 intake. This seemed kind f shady since i was told this is a very competitive program, so how could have i been accepted so quickly? So i decided to look up reviews i read plenty of them and only a few were positive.
one review said "school forges entrance exam to lure money makers into the school"
another review said "school purposely fails students so they will have to pay to redo semesters"
these two reviews alone made me extremely afraid then i read on and another one said "employees are extremely nice until the actual program starts, after this they only discourage and put you down, being extremely rude a lot of the time"

I AM SOO WORRIED.. ANYBODY with information about this school, comments or feedback would be great!! i need to know whats up because $40000 is a lot of money and i can't afford to even throw out the down payment of 10000...

Go to U of M!!!!!!! At least then you have an excellent program and education.
I think you've answered your own question about CADH. There is NO competition, just a few high school prereqs and lots of $$$$$
And do check about job market in your province. Kinda hard to pay back a loan when you don't have a job.

Superfluous RDH in Ottawa, Ontario

Worried:
Check out the following website from the Government of Canada. They're actually telling the truth, that there are more graduates than there are jobs. Here it is: www.workingincanada.gc.ca
A quote from this site:
"This occupation will continue to have more than an adequate supply of labour, given significant increases in the number of graduates. According to the 2009 annual report from the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario, the total number of registered certificate holders for this profession increased 45% between 2005 and 2009. New entrants may have to accept part-time or temporary employment to start due to the strong competition for jobs."

There are precious few part-time or temp jobs, certainly not enough to pay off your 40K debt.

On this site, there were no jobs listed for Manitoba. If I were you, I'd spend my hard-earned or borrowed cash elsewhere. Really.Follow your gut instinct; if you're not convinced that it's a good idea...

Do some research; phone up some practices and ask to speak to the hygienists, in person. I'm sure they'd love to talk about the present situation. Go for aptitude testing, to see where your strengths are. You never know what you might discover about yourself. GL

This is one of the best responses I have read yet. Yes, I hope Fran enjoys her nice pension, and does not think for one moment she left the profession better than she found it. Hey Fran how would you like to live on one day hygiene wages per week??? One of her editorials where she states that there were not too many RDH's in the province literally made me vomit.
So now we have a man in charge of a profession that is 99 percent female dominated?? A man that is NOT a RDH????? I wondered about that, but really, maybe anything will be better than FRAN.

winnipeg, I hope you are able to find set work in a decent office when you have paid out the outrageous cost for this field...it is a job at best now....have you read what actual RDH's where you are ARE saying? Young to older RDH's are having a tough time finding set work, even a day, due to the oversaturation of the field. This is FACT, reality now. People posting what the situation is, that are IN the field now...shouldn't be put down for their comments just because you don't agree with them...we, are not miserable as you say, but rather upset and concerned for anyone that is sucked into the field and it's lack of job opps' , esp. when you have worked hard in school, spent alot of money: school and licensing, etc...to find that it was for not. Get back to us on your job, if able to obtain consistent work and benefits when you graduate. VET

to the comment about Fran enjoying her pension....she doesn't have one....she is retiring after many long years of work ....and she can be proud of her accomplishments....she has dedicated her life to this profession that she so sorely loves....she had to go to the University of Toronto to get her degrees and wants people to have the best care...I have watched her fight for the dental welfare of seniors in homes, and to ensure that students are trained correctly by proper colleges....she took death threats from dentists and others because she wanted to better her profession...so to the idiots who are sour mouthing know that she will be sorely missed in this profession....

oronto College is the worst, they treat student with no respect at all very inhuman. The instructors will yell at you in front of your clients. They prepare false documentations against the students and make them sign it.What just because its an accredited college it does not mean they can do what they want.We should rise up and protest to this all of us. We are not here to pay $36000 fees and get humiliated. It yucks. Regency is the best dental hygiene school trust me guys, After receiving the lumsome they keep failing the students in the last semester. Some of them even graduate without completing the requirements. Its all in their hands just because they are accredited. WE pay them and also lose our self respect. Instead of making all this hue and cry and blaming fran for all the mess how many of you have actually gone to find out the truth

The trust is that the CDHO has to approve any program the MTCU(Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities.

Why did the MTCU allow so many PCC's(private career collegs) to mushroom all over (almost 18 in total)

This is the answer you can get if you submit a request to the The Information and Privacy Coordinator
Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities
18th Floor, Mowat Block
900 Bay Street
Toronto ON M7A 1L2
www.tcu.gov.on.ca/eng/about/access.html

Access the records and you shall know the truth
ask for the "program submission form" if you have questions contact me at dramandacharles@gmail.com

It will cost you $5 and less that 30 days wait time.
then you morons wont play the blame game and you will know the truth.
