joe in Baxley, Georgia said: i'm interested in owner operator how do you get jobs and contracts. in other words how do you get started We own a truck in your area. There are no jobs in this area. We have been in this for 10 years, I have never saw things this bad. Honestly, if you can find work anywhere else, PLEASE do. This is a business that is not worth going anywhere near right now. Maybe next year things will be better. Good luck in what you decide to do. |

Hey everybody! I don't mean to burst anyone's bubble out there, but, work in the New Orleans area SUCKS!!! We have had 2 dump trucks down there for the last year, and have only been ALLOWED to work them 50% of the time. I am sure that the posts you see for 2-3 years worth of work are for the levee jobs. That is what our trucks are doing down there. The wonderful Corps of Engineers determines whether or not the trucks can run on any given day based on soil moisture. I hate to inform the Corps, but New Orleans (and the whole southern half of Louisiana for that matter) is nothing but swamp. What kind of soil moisture do think they might have? You see, the 20 year old Corps kid out there checking soil samples gets paid whether the soil is wet or dry, so do you really think he cares if all of those dump trucks work or not? The big dump truck contractors from that area won't have anything to do with any job that the Corps is in charge of. We know why now. As a matter of fact, 80% of the owner-operators (and their drivers)are at or near bankruptcy right now. And you can forget about any fuel surcharge on those jobs that were bid last year. So my advice to anyone even thinking about going down to New Orleans to make some big money should just stay at home. Back home is where our trucks are heading, as soon as we have enough money to get there. |
|
dumplady in Cedar Hill, Tennessee 46 months ago |
I forgot to fill you all in on the payscale in the New Orleans area. You will make anywhere from $2.85-$3.10 per yard. So at $2.85 a yard with a 20 yard box you will make $57.00 per load. Some days you may get 9 loads ($513), some days 15 loads ($855), most days 0 loads ($0000000). So if there is anybody out there with a legitimate job in the New Orleans area we would all like to hear about it. By legitimate I mean...STEADY WORK, and a payscale that you are willing to post to everyone. We also need to know if the Army Corps of Engineers is involved in the project. If you can't do that than don't post at all. I hope that this clears up all the questions about New Orleans and it's land of opportunity. |

kevin in Houston, Texas 46 months ago |
yes I know what you mean I was down in louisiana area for a little while working several different locations. But if you can locate a man named Joe Hubbard he has around fifty trucks there he is out of kentucky go directelly to him not through a broker like the trap I feel into.At first You wont find a better person HONEST.When .I left work and money was good had to come back to Iraq he was working past Bell chase on through the port sulfer west bank almost to the very end When I leave here Ill be calling him for work wherever it may be I frequentelly look on here to see how things are at home think ill stay here a bit longer If interested i can give yall info on working overseas best of luck to yall |
|
dumplady in Cedar Hill, Tennessee 46 months ago |
Kevin, Things have changed since you left. We know Joe Hubbard, but not much going on there right now. We were working on the West Bank also, living (camper) in Belle Chasse. Now we are working about 90 miles away from there, but still very unsteady, thanks to the weather and the Corps. I understand right after the hurricane there was big money to be made, but not anymore. What are you doing in Iraq? Are you military or civilian? Best of luck over there. Be careful. |
