I recently acquired my CDL Class A license. I went to an eight week nights and weekend couse at a very respectable school. When I got my CDL I was excited and ready to go to work. I was hired at a local company. My first and last day was a freaking nightmare. It waw supposed to be a 4 week training course. #1. The trainer had a bad BO problem from minute 1. #2.I had to endure this for 13 hours. #3. 2 ten minute breaks (if that) and no lunch break. #4. I was yelled at at least 4 times. #5. He tried to compress a 4 week couse into one day. #6. Last and not least, the guy slept while I was driving for at least 2 and a half hours!! Needles to say I did not go back and they begged me to give them a second chance. NO way in hell!!

good luck. sounds like you went to Swift. I hear most places that take on new drivers are about the same. You just have to keep going through mentors until you get the right one or make it through the 6 weeks training. I personally went out of Swfit before that happened , because I have a problem with being lied to. I do not put up with it. |

I am sure they are not all like that. Problem is that the trainers are just in it for the money and do not have the desire to teach. A real teacher is a certain type person.

The problume was it stank. The gye only showered once a week and he smelled worse than the truck. If that was not bad enough he would punch me of burn me with a cigareat if I made the littlest mistake. I called my student driver manager to request a new trainer and was given the choice of living with it or getting off the truck. Thank god we came across my dad in Springfield Ohio. Thanks to my bad time on the road with this gye I will never get in a truck again with someone I don't know. I would like to know if any one else has a similar expereince with a driver trainer. My email is zr2z71@yahoo.com Sincerly Richard C Cole former werner employee number 410355. |

There is always lots of that sort of work around here in the summer. Draw unemployment in the winter here and there.

Perhaps you might like it here in Wichita. Plenty of work for a guy with a clean record. The mixer guys advertise for trainee drivers alot. usually starts at about 13.00 , 12 for dumps. That is not bad pay for these parts. |

marcus in Wichita, Kansas 54 months ago |
justin in Cleveland, Tennessee said: how can i get a job driving a dump truck if i don't have any experience? well it is not that hard. Most dump companies just want you to be able to pass the drive test. Driving a dump truck is nothing. The end dump is a little harder to get but there are lots of places that will hire you. mixer guys will usually train you. I just have a problem because of my felony. But I and 2 others hired on as end dump drivers tight out of school. In a couple months or so it will be easy jobs to get around here.

Marcus, thanks for the info on the job situation in Wichita. It sounds really great there. The Dayton, Ohio area is depressed. There is no major construction going on. People are getting laid off. Truck drivers are being treated like dogs. Me moving to Kansas is something to think about. In fact, I just had a talk with the wife about moving to where the jobs are. I have pretty much had it with this area. Happy Holidays again!! Mark in Ohio |

I have been driving a truck for thirty years and have never run into some of the problems you new guys are. That is terrible. I am now a drivers ed instructor and would never burn or punch someone for making a mistake. I am trying to open a cdl training course, sounds like you guys need someone who cares about teaching more then the money. I taught my brother to drive a truck. He use to cuss me out because of some of the things I made do with the truck. It took me 7 months before I let him test. He got a perfect score. He thanked me after getting his first job and driving on his own for about a month. I have a standing job offer as a trainer with his company. Some people do care, after all you are going to be on the road with me and my family. Don't give up, its a great carrer. Good luck to all of you. Joe |

Joe, Thanks for the encouragement. Let me tell you though, what I went thru in one day, I will never forget. I worked for a company in Tipp City, Ohio for one day. What a nightmare. I had to endure a 13 hour day with a guy that stunk like a chicken coop. I had 2 ten minute breaks, with no lunch break. I was yelled at 4 times or more. The trainer got to sleep at least 2 and a half hours, this was while I was driving the interstate for the first time. The guy had a skin disorder, which I was not told about. I must have hooked up to ten trailers this one day. I did the math on sleep. I was expected to go home, get maybe 6 hours sleep and then come back and work another 13 hour day!! Did not add up. The company begged me to give them a second chance. I gave them stipulations. They could not meet any of them except to give me a formal letter of apology. This has left a bad taste in my mouth. Happy Holidays to you Joe and your family, Mark |

I went to a local cdl school. It is supposed to be a very good one. Well I can tell you that for some it is not. The class I attended was headed by the head instructor. He evidently did not like the students he was given . The other classes seemed to have a positive experience.

If your classroom teacher is good, you need to at least have an idea of what to do with the truck when you get in it.Thats what you need to do, get in and go, pratical is the best way with a coach or trainer close by to help. again don't give up. have a good christmas |

Glad you are honest Joe. I think the whole industry has the "Survivor" mentality. If you cannot cut it you will be voted off. I talked to a guy who just runs a yard moving trailers around, I could tell from the conversation how he treated his personnel. I know one thing. I know why truck drivers are mostly mean. They are sleep deprived!! Mark |

Hi,
Oh, by the way. 12-14 an hour here is decent money. living here is far cheaper than you are used to on the coast. 450 a month will get you a nice house with 2 or 3 bedrooms. |

I have had my class A since may 2004 And its pretty bad that I had to go to Florida while vacationing with family, just to get 3 months experience in dump truck Luckily, my supervisor was my son in law I probably should have just stayed in Florida cause I'd still be working Im not perfect either, I had a Felony when I was 19 I am 35 now and IT STILL HAUNTS ME!! TO ALL THOSE PEOPLE WITH BAD TRAINING Southern State Community Colloge in Wilmington Ohio has an excellent Truck Driving Acedemy !! My Dad is a diesel mechanic, and I grew up in the garage playing in the semis that he was working on. Never in my wildest dreams did I think i'd actually learn to drive one in just 3 weeks! YEAH SURE I WANTED TO KICK THE DARN TRUCK WHEN IT DIDNT WANT TO GO WHERE I WANTED! I was actually gonna drop out after the first week, but I stayed and did good for a girl! I scored 105 on my PTI and had a 90 GPA I had my Hazmat but had to let it go cause I didn't have the money to renew it AND YES TRIED SWIFT AND WERNER HA-HA I DONT THINK SO I am content just wanting to drive a dump truck again!! |

Hoke moved to huber on taylorsville rd, across from the old hardfill. I f your familiar with the area, its where rip-rap rd turns into taylorsville rd. Im supposed to start there in mid december haulin salt from cincy to dayton area ODOT stations. Im a truck foreman for a local paving company, and things are tough. Lay-offs came early this year. Stupid economy screws alot of good hard working people. Just not fair. |
