That's used truck salesmen do so well, they eventually get free repairs to their trucks after they have been repossesed once or twice? I AGREE WITH YOU 100%. I can't believe the amount of posts on here that are new people wanting to get into the business. There is alot more to being an owner/operator and driving a dump truck than just getting a CDL. We do paving and if ya don't know what your doing and roll away, they're not going to call ya back.same with spreading material in a driveway @ 3-4". If your good at what you do you will find work and stay busy.,if you are in the right area. Best of luck to everyone wanting to get into this business. Sometimes even if you know what you are doing it is FEAST OR FAMINE,(top ramen or steak.)We have 2, 10 wheel dump TRUCKS F0R SALE,they have made us ALOT of money, but we are ready to get out of the business. These are good starter trucks for anyone...Please call me,or email, for photos and price. 928-23404042 |

Hudson hauling in Moneta, Virginia said: hudsonhaul@yahoo.com will relocate best bet for anyone right now is COLORADO. Somewhere by Rifle,Debeque area and run hauling material in the oil fields. They run year round.7 days a week. It's a little rough on the trucks because it's alot of off road, mud, snow ice(in winter).but it's steady work..They run alot of MACK dump trucks there with heavy suspension on them. There are some companies out there that will pay your fuel, insurance and plates if you run exclusively for them.Last I knew they had an office still in Rifle CO."Highland Construction". |

I totally agree with all you said. I've been driving tri-axles here in SC and paving for quite some time and you do have to pay full attention and be real careful when that paver is pushing you, especially downhill. I bought a used 2000 model Pete last year and have done ok with it. I say ok because this year is really bad around here. Thankfully I had some money put aside for times like this. Hopefully it will get better. We've got that new I-73 getting ready to start construction on hopefully soon. That project will indeed make some owners some serious money. Hopefully one of them will be me. Good luck to everyone. |

There's been lots of newspaper write-ups and meetings and such about I-73. To be honest though at this time the contract on the general constuction has not been awarded yet. I'm not real sure on the time frame right now either. I have been keeping my eyes and ears open on this project. Whenever I do find out I will certainly share the info. It is still early yet though. This job will definitely be one that will keep the lucky ones involved going for quite some time. There will be thousands of tons of dirt to be moved at the very start, not to mention all the base material and the asphalt in the latter stages. |

Cary in James Creek, Pennsylvania said: I have been in the business a while and have 5 trucks. The current condition of dump hauling is slow. The feds havwe withheld states funding on many road projects (election time). We too haul gravel stone and blacktop and you need to under stand dump trucking is all related. If any thing slows that is hauled by dumps the others will follow because Owner operators will under cut what you are hauling just to make their payments. My advise is to keep your costs low so you can be competitive. As for a older truck most times you end up spending more money in the long run. Repairs eat you up not only in cost of repair but down time loss revenue. Buy a truck about 7 to 10 years old in good condition that is your best deal. I know of several good trucks in my area $45k to $60k drop me an e if I can help pacelap@verizon.net[/QUOT |

I am looking to buy a dump truck & start my own business. I have worked in trucking my whole life & have my CDL's. Can anyone give me tips on starting out? What industries are best to haul for? Do you contract with certain companies? Do you haul stuff for individuals (like junk removal, gravel, mulch, etc.) or do you just contract with companies? Does anyone in NC have any feedback on potential customers? Anyone tell me how much insurance, gas, etc. costs each month? I'm looking to buy a used dump truck to start with that is cheap, any leads? If anyone can give me some good advice, I would really appreciate it. I'm ready to be my own boss & not let my employer dictate when I work. I know there will be many long days but at least it's for myself and not someone else. Thanks for any advice out there. |

Any tips on trucks, how old is too old? What is a typical price for a good used truck? What are the monthly maint. costs? Any info on contacts in St. Paul, MN. I would appreciate any advice especially if you are in Minnesota. My email is gbhegel@gmail.com Thanks in advance
