Stay away from the dump business.... if you get a truck, get a day cab and set yourself up with a local or regional freight shipping co. A good day cab is running in the mid to upper teens right now. I saw an 07 Pete from 17K. |

I got to agree that right now, it would be better to have a sister working in a cat house than own a dump truck. Least you might get a discount at the cat house, which is more than you'll get in dump truck world today. I love my truck...love the work I use to do with it. But lately, about a year actually now...it's become a nice rain water catcher for my wife's flowers. |

Up here in WA state, the economy has just now been hit with what the rest of the country has been under for the last year. I used to drive long haul but the rates got cut in 2008 and an owner/operator making $1 a mile would be hard pressed to make a living after expenses. Dumpers I know that drove their own rig years ago just let them sit now. The competition from the illegals (we all know they're working) is just killing the American trucker. |

I have to agree that the illegals have REALLY put a hurting on the industry. If EVERYONE would stand fast for a higher rate things just might work better for everyone. |

Western WA dump trucking is in the tank too. Rates are falling faster the dirt we dump. Fuel prices are up, maintenance fees remain high, tires bills are enormous and who can afford insuarance these days. Not a pretty picture. |

The only way you'll make it is if you have one heck of a connection to keep you busy. I've owned my truck for 3 years now. I definitely made more when I worked for someone else. After I get my truck paid off that might change though. You do see lots of trucks working but its a cut throat business. There's ALWAYS someone out there cutting your price. Go ahead and find out the hard way though. Nobody could talk since into me either. |
|
Randy in Florence, South Carolina 3 months ago |
You'll need at LEAST 5 or 6 thousand just to get you started and that doesn't include what you might need for a down payment on the truck. |

Good question been in it 2 yrs and this is the worst that I have seen what is happening here is that you have to lease on to a company and pay them their percent to run under their authority and when you 1st start you are at the bottom of the pecking order in other words you will be the last to get work at the 1st of the week or you will get the crappy paying loads that no body else wants. or it is really hard on your truck . If you are smatr I would not want to buy a truck right now even though you can find a bargain but rememberthat you have to pay for it once you get it .Good luck |
|
Pamie in Arlington, Texas 3 months ago |
Thanks for the info, i was going to buy a truck outright and go from there, I just wonder if it would be safer to just buy a tractor and run broker freight across 40, 20 and 10, i just dont want to buy either one and not be able to make any money...but i am going to buy one or the other, i guess i will have to get more info on companies here in Texas |

Patty in Salt Lake City, Utah said: My husband wants to buy a dump truck and deliver gravel locally. We have the money saved up to buy a 1987 Peterbilt. The owner of the Pete is an aquaintence and he said he will give us all of his business contacts in the deal. I trust him when he says the rig is worth the $35K he wants for it, it is well maintained and in excellent condition. My hubby has never done this sort of work but is a diesel mechanic by trade. I own a very sucessful business so I can handle the 'business' side of it. I am worried that this might be a bad decision on his part. |
