Patty in Salt Lake City, Utah said: My husband wants to buy a dump truck and deliver gravel locally. We have the money saved up to buy a 1987 Peterbilt. The owner of the Pete is an aquaintence and he said he will give us all of his business contacts in the deal. I trust him when he says the rig is worth the $35K he wants for it, it is well maintained and in excellent condition. My hubby has never done this sort of work but is a diesel mechanic by trade. I own a very sucessful business so I can handle the 'business' side of it. I am worried that this might be a bad decision on his part. He has a very secure job now, but HATES it. Is this a lucrative place for him to be? He is not so young any more and the Mechanic side of it is KILLING him. Any advice? suggestions? Thanks Patty

Hello,I was a plant manager of a local truss company for 18 years my job was also very secure ,I do not regret at all purchasing a dump truck and being self employed, since 2006, although pay is slow at times and no work at times,my suggestion is to have few thousand dollars for fuel ,tires etc set aside before starting, I spend $100.00 per day for fuel, I average getting paid bi weekly, Have work before you get truck!

Nico,
It depends on what you haul, where your hauling. Our Son was broker 55 Trucks a year ago plus his own.Now he is down to just running 2,he is driving one.My Husband has sold off most of ours and we have one for sale.Hoping the market turns around for everyone. Take into the fact your fuel, insurance, maintence, tags, and any miscellanous. You need to find out the charge for a load of fill(dirt what kind),sand, rock (what kind)rift raft, you can really haul anything depending on you truck and how many Tons.Hope this is helpful.Have Trucks for sale.
road use,

[I am looking to get some good advice on how to run a dump trucking buisness we have 3 up and running trucks right now the problem is the drivers lying, stealing time, not caring about the trucks, gossip its like there children we relized alot of things we need to implament now that weve been going for awhile but are thinking were going to piss the drivers off like percentage vs hourly, being responsible for carless damages to the trucks, wasking the trucks 1 a week keeping up on fluids, showing up on time, working a full day ECT ECT! Do you have any advice on how we shoud deal with these issue Thank You QUOTE who="Cary in James Creek, Pennsylvania"]I have been in the business a while and have 5 trucks. The current condition of dump hauling is slow. The feds havwe withheld states funding on many road projects (election time). We too haul gravel stone and blacktop and you need to under stand dump trucking is all related. If any thing slows that is hauled by dumps the others will follow because Owner operators will under cut what you are hauling just to make their payments. My advise is to keep your costs low so you can be competitive. As for a older truck most times you end up spending more money in the long run. Repairs eat you up not only in cost of repair but down time loss revenue. Buy a truck about 7 to 10 years old in good condition that is your best deal. I know of several good trucks in my area $45k to $60k drop me an e if I can help pacelap@verizon.net

Sounds like yall are just about tired of the slow times like we are here in Southern Utah. Has anyone heard anything on the new airport construction/excavating and when it may start or become avail? My husband has had to take our 2 super dumps up North a bit. We have two 06 Western Star Super 18 trucks that my husband and his brother own. They have a strong arm and three drops, so I guess you could say we can haul like the big dogs. They are capable of hauling 25 ton in one load. At first we could not keep up on the work because of their capacity and then over night poof gone. So if anyone is looking for a couple of big boys they are both mobile and ready to move. "They both have 5th wheels that they have been able to relocate into a camp groung/koa when needed. Preferably I'd like him to stay with in 400 miles from our home in Saint George. Thanks TJ
