EchoTechSaren in Los Angeles, California said: I am looking for a hospital/clinic/etc. that will be willing to hire a recent graduate in echocardiography from West Coast Ultrasound Institute. I am set to graduate in May of 2009. I plan on getting my ARDMS RDCS as soon as I can after graduation. I currently live in Fontana, Ca however, I am willing to relocate for a full-time position. Please let me know if there are any positions available. (importxshady@hotmail.com) Hey I go there do you have a bachelor already that lets you sit for the exam? I just started and entered the DMS program but have a bachelor and have been noticing that most DMS jobs require CAAHEP accredidation regardless of the fact that you might have your registries...however in echo there are almost none that say it has to be a CAAHEP school so i'm thinking of switching to echo, plus there are far fewer echo school in SO-CAL then there are DMS programs...so fewer people hunting for jobs in my opinion and less competition...whats your take on all of this and your experience ?! |

There are usually like 10:1 US over echo jobs! |

Hello Barbara, Thank you so much for responding! You helped me out tremendously on my decision. Is that what the pay is in Maryland? I heard in Texas it's more like 60,000. Thanks Again,

Joan,
I love echo and it to me is more fasinating then the other two modalites, but it is your choice in what ever you want to do. Take care and stay safe

Barbara in Easton, Maryland said: Joan, "echo starts out 55,000?" seriously?? Where did you get this information from? I personally started out nowhere near that number! I have had several offers in Texas and the pay range with experience is anywhere from 21-28 an hour. Most echo sites also require you to have an experience in vascular. Cardiologist are some of the cheapest docs out there... They dont care If you have rvt! They just want to make a grand off of a carotid due to a "bruit". I remember my instructors telling us in school to expect atleast 25/hr as a new grad- this is soooo wrong! No one in my class started close to 25/hr. It is wrong of you to tell this girl that she can look
In closing- i am rdcs/rvt/rdms(FE) with a few years experience whose hometown is in texas and i can assure you that thinking you will earn 80,000 even 55,000 starting out is completely WRONG. Get into US because you are passionate about the field- not for the money. |

I am from Maryland and Maryland is one of the top four states in paying Echo technicians. Now if I went to Pennsylvania where I am orginally from, the pay isn't so good at all. I agree with you 100% that get into for the love of your profession not which one pays the best. I came from ground-up in my profession started in 1982 in Cardiology doing EKG's, loved the electrical system of the heart, scared to death of looking at an Echo machine. I went to scanning Holter monitors, Stress testing. I can do everything in non invasive Cardiology. The top amount of money I made was $13.00 per hour and I had 20 years experience, loving what I do. People coming out of school were starting at what I made and didn't even have a CLUE!! So I stopped complaining about how terrible the pay was for the knowledge base. Knowing that Echo starting pay was $50,000-55,000 per year. Ok, being that I was now divorced and raising my daugther on my own. I moved back in with my ex husband( and shut up) and went to echo school full time, nowing what I was doing was difficult for me and my daugther. I graduated from a non accredited Echo school Johns Hopkins University Hospital( not eveything at hopkins is good) and the instructor was TERRIBLE. If I didn't love cardiology like I did I would HAVE UP AND QUIT. I stuck it out and was only able to find temp jobs in echo. I moved back out of the house with my daugther and went to work. Now I am great teacher to my patients and staff, but the issue is I am unable to pass the test for registery I have not passed 4 times, I am NOT GIVING UP!!! Yes, I have been to the seminars( like Pagusus the best and understood him) I have even gone as far as have myself tested and I have AADD with dyslexia and I will not be able to get more time on my testing for those with disiabiites as they give only give you more time, and I don't need that. I need to focus on my test, and my study. Cont. |

I applaud you for having all your credintials. My employer where I worked at put ads in professional magazines and they got Echo/Vasc from GA, TX, OH, and they were asking 100,000-108,000 Which the cheap practice I work for never would pay that. I was shocked as well that you can get that kind of money. Of course they didn't hire them. I have one of my tests completed as I was waiverd in, because I went to a school. I am now taking Adderall to calm me down and make me focus. Like I told my very kind boss/ they might have given up on me, but I haven't given up, and I won't give up. Now I have caughed out $1,000 for CCI tests hope I am making some one happy. I think you have to be honest and realistic with people where you live ect..dose play an important role. I do have a girlfriend that worked in NewMexico and she is dull registered and is making in the $40 per hour range. So they will pay if they need ya bad enough. |

I too was an EKG kid! I dont know about you but it kinds grates my nerves when a new grad comes in with no cardiac experience but a whole lot of attitude... I paid my dues LOL. I wish I made 100,000 but I prefer to work in private practices and have yet to meet an overly generous doc. Maybe someday! Have you tried ardms vs cci- I orginally thought cci would be way easier since it covers rhythms but I found that ardms was way easier to study for. Also I went to a worthless school and edlemans was all I studied for and passed. Good luck to you! |
|
Barbara in Easton, Maryland 31 months ago |
Lol, I know what you mean with "thier attitudes" and yes we both paid our due. When I have gone to the seminars sitting there feeling older, but knowing these young ones can pass the test but they don't have the experience that I have and we know who the doctor is going to call for..lol But as the world is, I need to pass the test. it dosen't make me a better tech, if I can pass the test, but it is the way life is now. You know I laughed as well and said hmmm maybe I should just sit for the ardms and see, maybe I could pass that one. I did find that the information that I was tested on is important for what I need to know to chat with a physician on, and the physicians who don't have an idea. Yes, doctors are not over generous with thier money..lol true. I was in shock when I saw what they were asking for dual certified, I would have said $70.000. but not the $100,000 range. I do know most don't have our experience EKG tech ect.. didn't have the experience we have in non invasive cardiology and my doctors like that they can get me in a pinch to do and EKG ect.. and I turn right around and go right back to doing an Echo. Yes, the MA's and Echo techs... they hire don't even know how to do an EKG, they are amazed how fast it can be done and correctly. I hope you are making decent money though, as you have lots of great skills and back in the EKG only days pay was pretty darn poor. |

ardms and cci are the two registry organization for US professionals. Like being a registered nurse- we have to take a test to become registered. Cci is for cardiac and vascular ( they may have general now??? Not sure) and ardms is for all modalities |

Hi,I have just completed state exams in Phlebotomy and EKG in Illinois. Does anybody know how long it take to get results back? I also will be taking the CNA/PCT state boards in a few weeks. My question is should I work as a CNA/PCT first to get experience before I apply for a Phlebotomy or EKG job? |

Hi there I have recently started a new job over in the UK (I am from the UK) which will see me go off to University to study Clinical Physiology. I will be taking the cardiac physiology route which will include ECG/EKG, echo, pacing, catheterization etc etc. As the course is part time (ie one day per week) it lasts four years. After I graduate I will then choose a speciality for instance, echo or electrophysiology etc etc. My title at this time will be a Specialist Clinical Physiologist. When I have searched for Clinical physiology jobs in the US just to see what the prospects for this type of job are I am struggling to find what i am looking for. I am basically wondering what the possibilities of moving over to the US are when I finally finished the course and have a speciality, which i am guessing at this early stage, will be echo or electrophysiology. Is it possible to get green cards for jobs of this sort in states etc. Any help or advice about this would be very much appreciated. Thanks Chris |

There are too many schools putting out new grads and there are no jobs. I live in New Orleans, LA and I was lucky I found one and have over three years experience in echo and vascular, recently I was looking for a job closer to my house and there is nothing. We have three schools teaching echo and none of them have jobs. It is a sad situation and this needs to be addressed. This is not just a problem where you live, its a problem everywhere and with the new proposed healthcare cuts to cardiology under the Obama plan we will be lucky if we even have a job. Hate to be the bearer of bad news but that is how it is. |

Passed the physics exam and just passed the adult echo and will now be a RDCS. I graduated in July and need to find a job so I can keep my skills so I don't loose them. I would take any job right now but have no prospects. If I cannot find an echo position by January, I am going to start nursing school. |

imagineman, You are making a hugh mistake going into nursing. I am a nurse in school for echo. Echo is a much better profession, and higher paying. I have been a nurse for 5 years now and am ready to take the bridge! In echo you can interact with the patients, but then give them back to the nurse to take care of. |
|
imageman in Swanton, Ohio 29 months ago |
Tracy are you an RN or LPN? What do you do in nursing? I love ultrasound but am unable to find a job. The wait list for RN is 2 years and I was on it when I started echo so my seat in nursing is still open, I have to act if I want to start the RN program soon. I was thinking that I could get into a cardiac care unit as a RN. I have EKG certification, ACLS, BLS and echo. Also, I have assisted in many TEE's during my clinical rotation in echo. |

imageman, I am a med-surg/oncology RN. I should apologize for my "mistake" comment. This is based on my opinions. Nurses are just glorified secretaries nowadays, nursing is not fun anymore. I enjoy the patient contact, and a nurse gets to spend about 10 minutes per 12 hour shift with them, the rest of the time is paperwork and computer charting. And there is so much paperwork and charting, that at the end of the shift you may not get to go home for an hour or two, until you catch up. Thats 13-14 hours a day on which your only paid for 12. |

ketu, I used the Feigenbaum book and accompanying CD that is a great resource. The test has a lot of video in it, so the CD that comes with the book helps. I also had a Pegasus practice CD that was produced by Terry Reynolds and that is a simulated test. In addition, I went over all of our class power points and notes. There is a little of everything on the test including EKG questions, anatomy of the heart, which vessel feeds which heart wall, lots of Marfan's and Down's syndrome but that will vary from test to test. Just go over EVERYTHING! |

I am an oncology nurse who just graduated with an echo degree. Nursing has really become an "unmanagable and un-fun" job. I used to love it, but in the last few years nurses have become glorified secretary's, and spend less and less time with patients. I picked the diagnostic route because of the patient interaction without all the paper and computer-work. |
