Michael Sch,

I'm located in Perth Australia and I came down Dec 2010 from Vancouver Canada. I am currently workign offshore oil and gas.

1)Posts from 40 months ago on Australia is still relevant because there is CONSTANTLY work here: mining and oil & gas

2)American qualifications dont mean sh__t outside of north america or american contractors in Gan or Iraq

3)Loose the attitude... American way of thinking and capitalism wont fly down here and its why the USA is in sh__t right now.

4)As for a job down here there is sh__t loads... its easy if you are 30 or under and you can get a 417 visa www.immi.gov.au. If >30 then you pretty much have to get sponsored by a company.

5)Most companies would rather take a Kiwi, Irish, Brit and even Canadian over American as American stardards are so different and considered lower standards (EX specifically). 457 Visa

6)You have to get your skills assessed by TRA Trades Recognition Australian, do a 2 week course then you'll get whatever state licence you apply for.

7)Research all of Australia... everything about it... last thing they want is another ignorant yank telling how things should be done. Things are done differently here and the great thing is wages are easily $100 000 - $240 000

Im work for my local council as an electrician over here in the UK. Have 2-3 years working experience, what qualifications are needed (Brit ones) to be able to apply for a skilled working visa?

Thing is i have some experience and i feel i would pass the practical exam. But the main question i need awnsering is what quals would be deemed enough/good enough to work in Aus on a skilled working Visa?

I have finished my 3 year C&G 2330 course and 17th edition. Is there anything else i need?

I have money saved up and could be there within the next 2 months if i got the go ahead!

Andrew Pearce in Newcastle, Australia

Hello Fred,

My name is Andrew Pearce. I have been a qualified industrial electrician going on 6 years. I am very interested in getting a job working in the mines. However all jobs that I see advertised are looking for electricians with experience in mines. My experience is working on industrial switch boards, flameproof enclosures and freight trains.

Is it possible for me to get a position in the mines without experience, and how do I go about this?

As I have a family in Newcastle, I could only work in mines in Newcastle and surrounds.

Kind Regards,

Andrew Pearce

I'm also an IBEW wireman from the USA, I've beem reading through the blog and noticed that there is no info as to how to get our trade recognized while we're still in the states. Currently TRA testing is not conducted here and we're not one of the countries qualified for testing. Anybody knows how?

Umm I am sorry to say this but it is not a plug! My bf is english and he has had to go through the entire process to be a qualified electrician in oz and it has taken a year so far and he still hasn't completed it...people forget to take into account the fact that the places that hold these tests can be booked out for months at a time!

Hi, I'm an English sparkie with 10 yrs exp already in OZ on a working holiday visa wanting to work in the mines... I'm currently in Melbourne but after speaking to the TRA guy (VIC) who told me the board only meet once a month it seems like I might as well just go to WA in a week or 2 when I've finished a little (labouring) job...I've got my White card, PPE, TFN, bank acc etc so can get on sites & work doing labouring etc but ideally want my A licence sooner rather than later, especially as I've turned 31 so can't get a second WHV.
My questions are:
I've refrained from buying tools etc (obviously didn't bring them)!, should I just stick with trying to find labouring work to pay for them & my licence or get tooled up & apply for TA jobs?
Is state sponsorship the way to go (heard its preferable to company sponsorship 'cos you're only tied to the state) and would I need my A licence to apply?
Apparently it's easier to gain your licence in SA? If true how, and is it easier to swap it to a WA one?
Lastly if I spend several months (not to mention $$$)! gaining my A licence but fail to get sponsorship, will having it make it easier to apply for sponsored jobs/skilled migration from back in England?
Kind Regards,
Darren

I'm only a Apprentice out in the Mines but I'm pretty switched on.. Since I know QLD and the coal mining industry better let me explain it. A whitecard is useless on a minesite as white card works on training developed for generally all states to comply with their OHS Act and Regulations.

So on a coal mine in QLD you do not come under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 but the
Coal Mine Health and Safety Act 1999, Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation 2001 and the safety and health management system (Your coal mines safety rules as the work environment between mines are different)

So, to get onto a coal mine there is two pathways to follow: Contractor or Employee..

Contractor:
You work for a company that employees you to work on a mine site, usually payed higher then mine employee's,(SOMETIMES not usually but SOMETIMES) get Fly in Fly out, work at different mine sites throughout your career. There can be sometimes not a lot of room for you to grow on your experiance as most contractors are contracted out to provide a specific job on site. A major issue with contractor and contracting companies is that you can be easily dismissed.

Some big companies to look out for are Legitons, Theis and Downer EDI Mining. they usually do contacting work for other companies but in some cases own the lease for their own mine site. But there is hundred more smaller or about same size contracting companies.

Employee's:
You will work for the company that owns the lease for the mine. The pay is pretty good however most of the time you will be required to live locally and sometimes accommodation is provided. There is plenty of room to move around in these companies with training. Your job is more secure it's pretty much a better long term investment to be employed by a lease owner then a contracting company.

Tools:
Sometimes the company can supply the tools of your trade and sometimes they don't but when on site if working for a major company you will have access to most of your specialist tools pretty easily.

PPE:
Don't worry one thing about the mines you will soon learn is PPE is given out by the container load. More so if you are a employee of the lease holder.

For training, if your getting a secure job like a eleckky 9 times out of 10 they will pay for your coal board medical, 3-4 day QLD Mining Induction and then a 2-3 day Site induction.

If you want to chat or anything about the mines reply here or contact me on skype james.mifsud1

Hi, I've read up quite alot of online info regarding electrical licences ect. And I'm unsure of which route to take as I'm not really an electrician as such.

Please could somebody lay out the steps I need to do as it seems quite complicated.
Here's a bit about me:

23 yo
Operated Cnc machines
Completed a 4 year modern apprentiship with gas turbine generator company.
Now working for them, building their packages.
Panel wiring, plc's junction boxes. I have knowledge on electrical testing and fault finding.
I've worked on fault finding and electrical/mechanical maintenance on various different Cnc machines.

i have mechanical experience; I have striped and rebuilt gas turbines and serviced our generator sets out in the field around Europe.

I am classed as an electrical fitter but I don't work much on live eq its mainly assembly work.
I have:
Nvq 3 in enineering electrical maintenance
Nd electrical engineering
hnc in electrical engineering
Nvq2 performing engineering operations ( turning, milling ect)

My aim:
This would ideally be working in the mines/oil/gas eventually, (would my maintenance q's be acceptable to get in there?)
but to begin with an electrical based job where I come home most nights would be great.

I would like to know where to start, as Im unsure of what tra I need to apply for?
What job would I be classified as?
Which licence I could get?
Tra? Artc? Peer? Electrical fitter/mechanic? So many questions lol

Sorry for all the questions but if I can start doing some of the applications ect now before i get there it'll be easier.
Thanks in advance to any help and advice.

Youse guys are dreaming. You have no chance of getting a job in the mines unless you are licenced and you have experience in a mining/ heavy industrial environment. As much as people say there is a skill shortage they still won't employ chumps! Theres also the matter of it's not what you know but who......

Lineys earn a little less around $39 to $40 per hour. Transmission lineys in big demand. Isolated locations but the money is way up there. The food is good. the accommodationis good and the beer is cold after shift. If you wish for more info let me know. Regards, Frontline Fred.

Im not looking for work specifically in the mines. shop fitting / domestic work would be more suited to myself .
