An apprenticeship is easily the best way. You get paid a good wage in every state, and take classes at the same time. Once you pass an exam you become a journeyman electrician. It takes about 4 years as an apprentice, but it's all on the job work, you do the same sort of work as licensed electricians, but work under someone for a few years. Its great, I love how the field has its own built-in solution for the age old "need experience before to get a job, and need a job to get experience" problem.

"School for the cert. exam"? And it's not an apprenticeship program? Did you check out this school? This is a new one for me. In order to qualify for the exam, you'll need 8000 hours OJT, be enrolled in an apprenticeship program, to be a "trainee" then after you get your JW card, you can apply for the exam

A friend of mine applied to the JATC electrician apprenticeship program in our area. He passed his aptitude test and got an oral interview. He knows he did well on the test and thought the interview went great but they went a letter back saying that he was not chosen for the initial spots but his name would stay on a list for 2 years and if positions are available he could be called. I am thinking he may not have got it because he had no electrical experience but he has worked the same job for almost 10 years. What are the chances that they could end up calling him? Is there any other programs that are similar to the JATC electrician apprenticeship program that he could apply for?

Start applying for jobs as an apprentice with every electrical contractor in your area. If they keep turning you down, ask why.

Well I went to college and received a certificate in electricity..I have yet to find out how to put this to use when everyone wants someone with at least 2 years of experience. How can I get my foot in the door and start working doing this kind of work without having experience other than college training? Where do I start?

If you have a local electrical union, talk to them. Sometimes they will shorten your apprenticeship according to the trainning already received.
