It depends on where you are hoping to take your career. In VA new laws have been passed and in order to do anything above a mechanical scrub you need to be a master esthetician which is more medical than anything Aveda teaches. However if you see yourself working in a more homeopathic environment, than Aveda may be for you. I am attending YDV as a master esthetician after completing my basic 600 there and I am SO happy I chose YDV. I have learned SO much, attended a lot of amazing training courses and conferences because of school, and having met other people from other schools in the area, am really amazed at how much other schools DONT teach. |

I DID CHOOSE YDV. I STARTED IN JANUARY I AM IN THE YELLOW CLASS WITH MRS. DELIA AND I AM SO HAPPY. SO I PROBABLY HAVE SEEN YOU! I AM HAPPY I DID NOT CHOOSE AVEDA. IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL SPACE BUT I DID NOT LIKE THE STAFF AND YOU WOULD ONLY BE TRAINED ON AVEDA. I FEEL I MADE THE BEST CHOICE BUT WISH THERE WERE MORE RESOURCES OUT THERE FOR ESTHETICIANS.

Go to YDV! You will learn much more than at aveda as aveda only uses aveda so you are limiting your exposure to product lines and different types of facials ect. |

You are probably better off not going with YDV . I feel like I have wasted time and money at Aveda. I would not recommend Aveda in DC. I chose the school because of the wellness aspect of it but I have not really received any training in the "Aveda" stuff and that's frustrated me and almost everyone in my class who really wanted to learn the wellness stuff, the stuff that apparently makes Aveda DC different from other schools in the area. We have these books that we have never studied from and I find myself questioning what the Aveda difference is because all we have done is Milady's and you are gonna get that from any school. I also find that I have to teach myself a lot of the stuff because it just wasn't taught. In my opinion, the PT (evening program) is very mediocre and students are not integrated into the school as are day students...like step children. On the bright side of things, from what I hear, Aveda will provide you with a lot of practice as far as working on actual clients compared to other schools. This could be a plus if it matters to you so that is something you could look into as you are comparing schools. I don't know how true this is because I was one of those people who was so sure they wanted to go to Aveda because they were supposedly the best and because they offered all this holistic training, so I didn't look anywhere else. |

Oh...another thing is that Aveda is very strict and not very flexible. We've had people in my class leave the school because of that. I'd say that if you don't have a job, Aveda *might* work for you. However, if you have a job that you have to maintain it will be a challenge coz you'll only be allowed to miss 37.5 hours (that's missed days, times when you are late) for the duration of your program. To me, that's not a whole lot for a program that is 9months long and if you miss too many hours they can expel you and still expect you to pay their money. BTW, my opinions relate to their PT program coz that's what I know. Don't know too much about the FT one but I imagine that it's organization is not too different to the PT one. Good Luck! |

I AM HALF WAY THROUGH THE BASICS PROGRAM AND AM HAVING A GREAT TIME. WE HAVE A GREAT CLASS AND HAVE BEEN TO IDI 3 TIMES. AT THE UNDERGRAD DAYS OUR CLAS SEEMED TO KNOW THE MOST,ASKED AND ANSWERED THE MOST QUESTIONS. THE OTHER STUDENTS THERE REPRESENTING OTHER LOCAL SCHOOLS, WHOM WERE GOING TO GRADUATE IN A MONTH OR SO, DID NOT SEEM PREPARED AS MUCH. THOUGH THE ADMIN. PART OF THE SCHOOL SEEMS A LITTLE DISORGANIZED WE HAVE A GREAT GROUP OF TEACHERS. |

I took the YDV program in 2000. The teachers are very educated, talented and their focus was always on every students success. I have met and worked with lots of different Estheticians who do not have the same knowledge base that I do in even a short "300 credit hour program". Go figure! Since being an Esthetician for 8 years I have experienced fellow coworkers that cannot wax properly, do not possess nearly the amount of skin care knowledge that I do. I wholeheartedly endorse their program and would steer any new student to them.

I chose Aveda Institute in Florida and I love it! The teachers are great, we do study Miladys but only because that is what is our boards test is on. The 2nd week of school we were already doing facials. I also chose Aveda because they are a truly "green" company and if you haven't noticed that is the way the world is moving toward. I worked in a salon where they had no education on what products they were using and at Aveda we do use our products but they are organic and leave your skin feeling great. We have also learned about what really goes in our makeup, yuck all the stuff including me that we have placed in our skin. I love Aveda, the products, the education and they have great jobs with awesome pay! |
