There is a misconception which I think needs to be cleared up. A Medical Esthetician is someone who works directly for a physician performing skin care services. There is no state that I know of that recognizes a medical esthetician. That said, your experience as Practical Nurse for 17 years and working the Burn Unit at a local hospital. gives you a great creditial. You have seen skin at its worst and you have an insight into skin that many do not have. You will most likely be the most important student to your classmates as you will have questions that others will not even be able to think about. And ask those questions. If something doesn't make sense, say so. You have an understanding of burn victims that few have and you may want to specialize in that area (including camo makeup). If this sounds interesting, I would also suggest a certification in NLP since much of your effectiveness will be associated with the victim's mental state. Although you don't need a cosmetology license to work int he medical field, if you decide to go out on your own and work on referral for many physician's you will need one. But for right now think of all the physicians that you work with right now. Make a list. Take names. Each one may want your services later. Jeff Certified Clinical/Medical Aesthetician |

Hi. How are you? :)I have read your postings and where is it that you would go to school for medical esthetics? I have an AA Degree in Fashion Marketing. I have heard that you need to become an RN, then go to school for laser training if you want to do IPL's etc. I have also heard that becoming an estetician is the best place to start. What do you reccommend? Is there a specific agency or website that posts current jobs in the industry, because I have also heard that you can get trained w/out any experience if they feel you suit the position. Please let me know. Thank you and God Bless. :)

Hi there. Where is the best place to start if you are just going into medical aethetics? I live in Hermosa Beach, California and I would like to work specifically with skincare med spas and I am starting from scratch. I would like to work for an established company. One suggested I just get my Rn liscence and they can train me from there. A medical aestitican reccommended I just attain my estetician liscence, then hire out RN's to open a business. Do you need a strong stomach to persue this business. My experience is in fashion sales and pre-school teaching.

As a Cosmetologist, you do not need an SkinCare Specialist License in Texas as your full license covers it. However, you may want to sharpen your knowledge and expertise. As for Medical esthetics, in Texas, there is legally no such thing. You can only refer to yourself as one IF you are working for a doctor. Otherwise you may only refer to yourself as a clinical aesthetician. However, when referring to yourself, legally you can only refer to yourself as stated on your license. The most important consideration you need to think about is what you expect Medical Aesthetics is and what you foresee yourself doing. Too many think that Medical Esthetics is glamourous or that it relates the practice of medicine so that it is more prestigious. The only difference between working as a clinical esty and a "Medical" is the fact that you can use more aggresive MDA's and Acids. I am saying this from experience in that I am a Certified Clinical/Medical Aesthetician, Licensed Skin Care Specialist, retired after over 40 years in the industry. So, before I know how to address your question better, I need to know WHY you wish to be a Medical Aesthetician and what do you expect to be doing? |

Brooke in Amarillo, Texas said: Jeff, For me, recommending a school is difficult because I, personally, do not recommend "schools". My reasoning is that a "school" is only responsible to offer education to prepare a student to pass their state board. That's really it. The quality of education above and beyond this usually is found in the quality and experience of the instructor who is giving the training. They are the key (to me) as to the quality of education that I would be getting above and beyond the minumum requirements. I constantly hear licensed esty's state, "When I went to school I didn't learn anything". But that's not actually factual because they learned enough to pass their state board (which is actually all that the school is required to do). If I were doing it again I would be more interested in who is teaching the course and what their experience and additional training is. This is especially important in Texas in that Texas has a drastic shortage in esthetic instructors (those who are licensed to teach esthetics only). The last I heard there were around only 68 in the entire state. A school does not have to use esthetic instructors. They can use those who have a full instructors license and at times even a student instructor. (cont) |

Jeff B in Dallas, Texas said: What I would recommend you do is attend an upcomming conference in Arlington on April 13 & 14 which costs 60.00 (pre-registration) and meet and talk to esty's who will be attending. It will give you a feel for the industry and help you tremendously. When you talk to them, make sure you ask who the instructor was and make note because if you talk to the school you want to make sure that that is the instructor that is still teaching. Otherwise, you may not get what you were anticipating. I do know of some great instructors, but I don't know which schools they teach at but I feel confident that a lot of them WILL be at that conference attending everything they can to learn more. Actually I prefer working with physicians. But, this is because my interests deal with the clinical and medical side. This may be because my brother is a surgeon so I have more of an understanding of them. As for a bad experience, I can honestly say that I have not had one. I have had some disappointing ones but they did not relate to actual working with them. Maybe I am just lucky. I did have one embarrasing one many years ago when I was very young and cocky and thought that doctors didn't now anything about skincare like skin care specialists did. I was discussing my beliefs to a woman at a coctail party when I was later learned (when she had had enough of my ranting) that she was the head of a dermatology department of a renowed hospital specializing in burns and proceeded to tell me exactly how much I did NOT know. It was one of the worst experiences in my life...but it was also the best because it gave me humility and respect and a desire to learn what I did not know. I think of her every time I hear an esty say that doctors don't know anything about skincare. (Cont) |

Jeff B in Dallas, Texas said: As for your statement pertaining to certification, I do not understand your question about moving to another state. The only thing a state regulates or gives is a license to practice. Certifications come from whatever source offered a particular course of advanced education and has nothing to do with your qualifications and your state license. So, to be "re-certified" would simple mean that you take the course again and you will get a second certificate to hang on the wall. Jeff |

Hi, I am persuing a career in Medical Aesthetics. I was wondering if you have heard of any great instructors that are teaching in the Kitchener/Toronto area?? If so what school do they instruct at. You also mentioned that Toronto has a great Cidesco program. Can you tell me where in Toronto? Is it a seperate course that you should take or should it be part of the cirriculum? There is a program here in kitchener that offers a Masters program, You get a Advanced Aesthetic Diploma, and a a Electrolysis Diploma plus a bunch of certificates. I want to be a Medical Aesthetician so should I bother with the Electrolysis Diploma??? Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you sooo much. |

I am wishing to get into the field of medical esthetics. I was going to start esthetician school this summer, but now, I understand that as an RN, I just need to get trained on the job and certified in advanced esthetic procedures. Is this correct to anyone's knowledge? I have been an RN for 12 years. I wish to do Botox injections, vein treatments, hair removal, peels, etc, etc. Is it best that I have a job in this field lined up PRIOR to getting these certifications? Or, is it best that I get the certifications first in order to get a job in this field? I need any advice I can find! I want to do this sooo badly, I just don't have a clue where to start! Thanks! |

I am a newbie to the aesthetics field and was wondering if anyone has any information on good schools preferably around the San Fernando Valley or San Gabriel Valley area? Also any information on going into the clinical area of aesthetic. I plan to work with a physician so are the requirements more in depth or the same as the licensed aesthetician? Any information would help. Thank you! |

First, All schools are only as good as their instructors! That is the key. A school is only required to prepare you to pass your state board (which is basic). I have seen good instructors (which I feel are teachers) and very poor instructors. Second, If you are going to work in the area of Clinical/Medical esthetics there are requirements and qualifications. You only need a license to work as an esthetician. BUT there is a big difference between working as an esthetician and in a spa or salon and working for a physician. Clinical/Medical esthetics is advanced esthetics. It has been my experience that very few physician's will hire you out of school. You will need experience and advanced knowledge, not only with techniques and proceedures but also knowledge of working in a medical practice. Since you are going to pay from $8,000. to $12,000 for school to just be able to practice I suggest that, before you sign that school contract and be on the line for paying off that loan or making that investment that you make an appointment with a physician who offers aesthetic services in his practice (preferably a dermatologist), pay his fee for a consultation and ask him/her what they consider would be qualifications for them to hire you. Then make an appointment with their aesthetician and do the same them them. Ask what school they went to and who the teacher was. Remember the teacher is the key. It's better to spend a couple a hundred dollars and get answers now than thousands and find out you made a bad investment. You might also join the message board groups.msn.com/estheticiantoesthetician and seach for the thread "TOO MANY ESTHY'S???" Which might give you insider look into the hiring situation. Jeff |

this might help. I strongly recommemd attending the Dallas International Congress of Esthetics in Arlington on April 13, 14th and meet and talk to other esthy's and Clinical/Medical Esty's there. I'll be there. Someone at the Glymed booth will probably know where to find me. And, of course, I will be at the Bar-B-Q the evening of the 13th. Jeff |

I have enjoyed viewing your site and I'm currently waiting for my scheduled appt. for the Esthetics State Board Licensure exam.I am also currently researching my options for relocation and reprocity by states. A Medical Esthetician position is most favorable and desired for me because my backgrond is in the medical field. I've worked as an O.R Attendant and Anesthesia Tech Asst. but most recently as a Medical Assistant at a medical group. My passions are in the Cosmetic and Plastic procedures area and I'd like to work at a Medi-Spa or Dr.Ofc. I lived in a big major city over 25 yrs. and I am very anxiously awaitng the moment that I can return to the big city life and where this market is extremely hot!! and especially becoming certified in diversed procedures through CEU's. Thank You so much for this site, and yes please, I would definitely love some advice, direction, insight and contructive criticism from your seasoned medical esthetician experts.

Do you think it is worth investing in a basic aesthetician license? I am already a CMT (Certified Massage Therapist) in VA and they have just gone from no requirements at all to 600 hours. However, I am told that to do a lot of peels etc at the spas, one needs to a be a Master Aesthetician which is 1200 hours here! Can one get employment as an aesthetician with only 600 hours in most other states? Thanks so much! |

An esthetician usually has a min of 750 hours before licensing. Years ago the 150-200 orso hours a cosmetologist was given was okay but the last few years esthetics has and will continue to change so very much that one should strive to get at least 1200 hours by taking advanced esthetic classes. It is coming ever closer to medical. To my knowledge, Dr Fam's Dallas Advanced Medical Aesthetic program- 8 full days the the only state licensed medical aesthetic provider taught by a physican. He is excellent but I would suggest you take IDI's 5 day advanced basic class and a few other before so you have a good foundation . |
