I have been doing online research and I would like personal feed back as to which school in Portland Oregon offers a great Esthetics program. I am a mother of a five year old and would have a hard time going to school for five months full time. Are the comptentacy programs as good as the hourly? |

I went to portland beauty school ( comptentancy based ) - it was one of the least expensive and fastest, with part time hours. I had heard only good things and it fit my schedual. I liked the instructors, but I do wish they would have spent more time on somethings, i could have leared more and gotten more pratice. Although, I think the clock hour schools kinda drag it out, you're punching a time card like its a job, and you are not nessisarily learning more. If i had the time and money I probabaly would have picked a bigger named school like the Aveda Institute. I have heard bad things about IBS ( on division), and Beumont ( on sandy). And everyone tells me not to work for Dosha. Any other ?'s |

Take a look at the European Institute of Cosmetology. Very unique, professional and great education. |

Thanks Jenna for the advice. I was looking at the Euro Institute in Beverton. It looks like an amazing program but it's 700 hours and it begins every six months. I couldn't afford to be unemployed from April until October. I was wondering are you working now as an Esthetician? |

karli, yeah I recently started my job at Spa La La ( ne portland). Its great so far, I am so excited. I do a lot of waxing there, but also facials. The other girls do pedi/manis. Its a pretty cute place and so far all the clients have been so nice. Yeah, the Euro Institute sounds really impressive, I had looked into it also. Thats a long program; Oregon only requires 500 hrs. I bet thats full time also. There are schools with part-time hours, and even evening hours that might fit better for someone who needs to keep working throught out the course. I had wanted to do this for a few years, but I was living in Kansas, there was only one beauty school in town that offered esthetics, the problem I had was that is was full time( 35 hrs a week/650 total) and pretty expensive, that was impossible with my schedual. so I kept putting it off. Luckily I had alot more options in Portland. good luck to ya |

I went to the Euro, not impressed. It felt like if you asked any thorough questions the instructors didn't really know what to do. I felt like the only answer they ever gave was "it works on a cellular level". (Rolling my eyes). I don't really think they know very much more than exactly what is in the Milady's with the exception of a VERY basic overview of a few alternative treatments. I don't know if the one in Washington is better or not but I wouldn't waste my time or money at the Beaverton school. I had to basically still do all my in depth study on my own by reading everything I could get my hands on, including studies, trade books, mags, aesthetics boards, etc. in my spare time. One thing they were good at teaching was the massage portion of the facial. If I were to do it over again, I would just do the least expensive quickest program and count on doing alot of self-study and advanced education. |

Does anyone know anything about the Aveda Institute? Also, would like an education that includes microdremabrasion, etc etc. |

Karli Ludwig in Gresham, Oregon 2 months ago |
Hi, everyone. I went and looked at the European Institute of cosmetology and thought it was nice but they are no longer competancy based and their prices have gone up. I am going to look at the Aesthetics Institute today I will let you know how it goes. |

I am going to look at the Aveda institute on Thursday, Is that the one you are talking about? Also, has anyone heard about Manning Academy? I noticed they had a job for an instructor on Craig's list and required alot of know-how. Thanks for responding. |

I was very impressed when I went today at the Aesthetics institute. They charge one price and everything is included. The facility was nice and clean and there was plenty of private rooms to see clients in and they had microderm machine, sweedish water room and led light thearapy and much much more. They also gave me numbers and names of people who have attended there in the past to speak with. I am going to be starting the first week in May. I have also heard that the Aveda is an excellent school to attend the only reasons I did not consider going there is the cost is much higher and you are taught only in Aveda products and procedures. There is nothing wrong with that I just wanted to learn about all products on the market and did not have the money or the time to attend. I have also heard that you have a very good chance with getting employed by Aveda after you graduate. Please write back and let me know. I also was interested in learning how to perform brazilian waxing and I have been told by every school except Aesthetics Institute that they do not do indepth teaching on it. Good Luck Ladies. |

Hi Debbie, I am not sure about e-mails on this site but I can see the benefit of networking with other people going through this experience. I was wondering when you start at Aveda? |

I just finished up in an hourly school, and wish I had gone to a competency one...I spent the majority of my time watching movies or reading a book to fill the hours. |

What school was it? Does anybody have info on Aveda Institue? I went to see it and it seemed really good, but wondering if anyone has first hand experience? |

I live in Tennessee and will hopefully be in Oregon before winter. I would like to attend an Esthetician School. I would appreciate any tips of which schools are good and give you the most for your money and which ones are best avoided. |

I am researching schools as well. I am 31 with two kids and a full time PR account exec wanting a change. Big step! :)I can tell you I have found 3 schools that do competency based: Portland Beauty School, IBS, Northwest College of Hair Design. IBS and Portland Beauty seem to have the best hours. I am going to check out IBS this weekend. You can even take Saturday only classes and get done in 4-5 months. I will let you know what I think of IBS. I would love to hear from more of you on your experiences as you choose schools!

Is Aveda competency based? I really really liked that one. The facility is so beautiful, I meta few of teh students adn tehy seemed really happy, and it seems like it really well run. It is a bit on the expensive side, though. |

Any new graduates from the Aveda institute? did they help you with job placement? or are you still unemployed? |

Mandy in Montesano, Washington 1 month ago |
Erin...Did you check out IBS? Has anyone else heard good/bad about IBS? Thinking of going there later this month. Thanks |
|
Erin in Wilsonville, Oregon 1 month ago |
Yes I went and thought the building looked kind of schetchy but went in side and fell in love with the students and director. I am registered for the Saturday classes and start on the 31st. It doesn't take mush more time then the full time and there is not such a huge income gap when you are done and looking for your job. Any other updates on other schools or what are people planning to do after they are done with school? Next steps. Salon, spa, medispa, private? Love to hear.

Hi I just wanted to chime in and say that I have attended IBS. I went there because I wanted a competency based program. To be honest, I really didn't go and visit any other schools because I had a friend who attended IBS and recommended it. I LOVE Kory the esthetics instructor there, he's a great guy! The school itself is not beautiful, if that is what you are looking for in a competency based program I would check out Portland Beauty school, I heard it is nice. (If that is the one off of Sandy) Other than that, you will get the basics at this school, what you need to get started. As an esthetician you will always need on going training. =/ |

Thank you for your response Saundra! Can I ask what you do now? Also, how difficult are the competency tests and Oregon Boards?

What's frustrating is that thier's plenty of places that do the brazzilian wax. But they don't do men. That is just frustrating. I mean it's not like a woman hasn't seen a mans eqiupment before, just becuase I'm not a woman. It's just fruastrating. The woman who has done it for me for 4 years now now my friend is concentrating on college so whe can't do it anymore. Is thier anyone in the Tri-city Washington area that will do the brazzilian was for men? |
|
Karli Ludwig in Boring, Oregon 29 days ago |
Jason I go to school in Portland and my instructor does male brazilians and teaches students about them also. |

MONIQUE MENDOZA in Portland, Oregon 7 days ago |
HELLO LADIES! I AM ACTUALLY A FLOOR INSTRUCTOR AT THE AESTHETICS INSTITUTE LOCATED IN THE HEART OF SOUTH EAST PORTLAND. I HAVE SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR ALL OF YOU :) FIRST OF ALL WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT IS TO WRITE DOWN A LIST OF THINGS THAT YOU WANT TO LEARN AND GET OUT OF THE SCHOOL, SECONDLY FIND ONE THAT FITS YOU, YOU WILL ALWAYS DO BEST IN A ATMOSPHERE THAT YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE IN. REMEMBER THAT IT IS YOUR EDUCATION AND YOU ARE PAYING FOR IT!!!!!! DO NOT BE AFRAID TO APPROACH YOUR INSTRUCTORS, THAT IS WHAT THEY ARE PAID FOR! MOST SCHOOLS ARE HOURLY VERSUS COMPETENCY. THERE ARE PROS AND CONS TO BOTH,A AND EVEN COMPETENCY SCHOOLS HAVE HOURLY LIMITS THAT YOU ARE NOT TO EXCEED WITHOUT PAYING OVERTIME. IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO GET AS MUCH AS YOU CAN OUT OF YOUR PRIMARY EDUCATION OF AESTHETICS BECAUSE EVERYTHING BUILDS ON EACH OTHER. BY THE TIME YOU GRADUATE YOU SHOULD FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH YOUR PRACTICES AS WELL AS DISPLAYING PROFICINCYS IN YOU BASIC EUROPEAN TOOLS AND ADVANCED MATERIALS SUCH AS ENZYMES, ACIDS (AHA'S BHA'S) MICRODERMABRASION, MICRO CURRENT ETC, EVEN IF YOU PLAN NOT TO USE THEM. REMEMBER THAT TODAYS CLIENTS ARE MORE EDUCATED THAN EVER, AND YOU WONT ALWAYS BE ABLE TO TALK YOUR WAY OUT OF THINGS.
OR IF YOU WANT ANY HELP IN EXTRA OR ADVANCED COUNTINUING EDUCATION CLASSES YOU CAN REACH ME BY E MAIL MONIQUEMENDOZA@GMAIL.COM
*LAST BIT OF ADVICE :) IF YOU REALLY WANT TO KNOW WHAT A SCHOOL IS LIKE (OR HOW THE STUDENTS LIKE IT) RESEARCH THEM, THEN MAKE A APPOINTMENT FOR A SERVICE AT THAT LOCATION. YOU WILL BE ABLE TO SEE WHAT ITS REALLY LIKE WITH OUT ALL OF THE SMOOSHING |
