I'm currently looking for a good esthetician school in the DC Metro area. I know about Aveda but I'm not convinced that I'd like to go there. My problem is that I don't have a car so the school needs to be accessible by bus or metro. Are there any other accredited esthetician schools in the DC area? I'd appreciate some advise.

Many thanks,
C

I would not recommend Aveda in DC. I chose the school because of the wellness aspect of it but I have not really received any training in the "Aveda" stuff and that's frustrated me and almost everyone in my class who really wnated to learn the wellness stuff, the stuff that makes Aveda DC different from other schools in the area.

We have these books that we have never studied from and I find myself questioning what the Aveda difference is because all we have done is Milady's and you are gonna get that from any school. I also find that I have to teach myself a lot of the stuff because it just wasn't taught. In my opinion, the PT (evening program) is very mediocre and students are not integrated into the school as are day students...like step children.

On the bright side of things, from what I hear, Aveda will provide you with a lot of practice as far as working on actual clients compared to other schools. This could be a plus if it matters to you so that is something you could look into as you are comparing schools. I don't know how true this is because I was one of those people who was sure they wanted to go to Aveda because they were supposedly the best so I didn't look anywhere else. Oh...another thing is that Aveda is very strict and not very flexible. We've had people in my class leave the school because of the the program is not flexible.

I'd say that if you don't have a job, Aveda *might* work for you. However, if you have a job that you have to maintain it will be a challenge coz you'll only be allowed to miss 37.5 hours (that's missed days, times when you are late) for the duration of your program. To me, that's not a whole lot for a program that is 9months long and if you miss too many hours they can expel you and still expect you to pay their money. BTW, my opinions relate to their PT program coz that's what I know. Don't know too much about the FT one but I imagine that it's organization is not too different to the PT one

My advise to you is to stay away from Aveda Institute in DC, the program is rigid and you learn nothing.
do not confuse the Aveda products with the Aveda School (institue) we are talking night and day here. And if you really decide to go there make sure you asked lots of questions. you can only missed certain amount of hours and when you do they are ready to throw you out of the program.if you are a working adult do not even think about it because they do not compramise. No parking is available there so you spend time driving around and looking for a place to park by the time you find a parking space, you are late for school and then you cannot get in to your class. Aveda program is not for working adults, they are not flexible in their program. THIS SCHOOL IS THE WORST. do not waste your money.Go to Graham Webb and several others out, do your research before you waste $10.000

AFTER EXTENSIVE RESEARCH IN THE DC METRO AREA I CHOOSE YVONNE DE VILAR. I CHECKED OUT AVEDA FIRST AND WAS IMPRESSED BY THE SETTING OF THE SCHOOL,BUT NOT BY THE STAFF THEY SEEMED VERY SUPERFICAL. YOU WOULD ALSO BE JUST TRANING WITH AVEDA PRODUCTS AND NOT EXPOSED TO THE VARIETY OF PRODUCTS, TECHNIQUES, AND MACHINES. YOU ARE ALSO THERE WITH HAIR STUDENTS WHICH IS A WHOLE NOTHER SET OF POLITICS AND DRAMA.
I THEN CHECKED OUT GRHAM WEBB. I HAD ATTENDED THE SCHOOL FOR COSMETOLOGY WHEN THEY WERE LOCATED ON WILSON BLVD. I LIKED THAT THE HAD A SEPARETE FLOOR FOR THE ESTHETICS. BUT IT WAS A NEW PROGRAM AND WAS STILL UNDERGOING SOME MORE PLANNING BECAUSE OF THE LAWS CHANGING FOR LISCENING.
AFTER VISITING LOCAL SPAS I FOUND THAT MOST ESTHETICIANS HAD GONE TO YVONNE DE VILAR. THEY HAD SAID THEY FELT OVER PREPARED FOR THE STATE BOARD. THE FIRST IMPRESSION OF THE SCHOOL IS THAT IT IS A LITTLE OLD AND COULD USE A FACE LIFT. BUT AFTER BEING THERE FOR 2 1/2 MONTHS I AM HAPPY WITH THE CHOICE I MADE.
I HAVE BEEN TO THREE CLASSES AT INTERNATIONAL DERMAL INSTITUTE AND HAVE SPOKEN TO STUDENTS FROM OTHER LOCAL SCHOOLS LIKE ANA VISAGE ETC..AND THEY FEEL LIKE THEY DO ALOT OF SELF STUDY AND ARE NOT HAPPY WITH THE STAFF.
I WISH YUOU GOOD LUCK. YOU REALLY HAVE TO GET OUT THERE AND VISIT AND TALK TO AS MANY PEOPLE IN THE INDUSTRY AS YOU CAN.POST AGAIN IF YOU HAVE ANYMORE QUESTIONS. JILL

you don't need to go to Europe...

Here are your options here in the USA:

www.ncacares.org/esthetics/CIDESCO.cfm

Only three on the list allow for federal loans: San Francisco, CA, Independence, MO and Jeff City. The other two: St. Louis and Houston, TX require private loans.

I completed the esthetic program at Graham Webb in 2007. I attended Yvonne de Vilar in 2008. I visited the French School in N.W. D.C.....Please understand that if you attend a school in Virginia it is a two tier system which means there is a basic program and a master program unless you complete both programs you can not take advance classes, you will not be able to gain reciprocity in other states even if they require 600hours or less. The total cost for both is around $20,000.00. Please do not get stuck with student loans. My advice is go to another state and pay for the 600 hour program including microdermabrasion/lymphatic drainage and chemical peels. Graham Webb was esthetically pleasing to the eyes and the older instructor was a excellent teacher. Their master program is not ready yet. Out all of the schools Yvonne de Vilar was the best because of the knowledge and experience of its teaching staff. The French school for whatever reason staff was never there on time or at all. Good Luck!

You can expect anything and everything.

Maybe a better wording would be:

1. Based on today's economy what is the AVERAGE NET yearly income of esthticians who are newly licensed?

2. How many licensed esthetician's are actually practicing after one year? Two years? 5 years?

3. What is the percentage difference between estheticians working as an independent contractor, commission only, and salaried employees?

4. What is the average startup capital needed to work and operate as an independent contractor or renter if equipment, products, insurance, etc are NOT provided?

I visited the "school" and the instructor/admission rep/owner...does everything! I can not remember her name but she was friendly with an accent but I did not like that there was no privacy and she spoke to me about the program in front of other clients. I figured a lot of customers come in to get their makeup and facials done there. There were three women waiting for services in the waiting area. The reason why I said "school", it's because it looks like a house from the outside, well it is a house, then when you enter the house it has a facial room and makeup room. There are other businesses in the area that also look like houses (dentistry, finances, etc) It is small, it is not your ordinary school though. The tuition is not that expensive like Yvonne De Villar, Aveda and Graham Webb but you also get what you are paying for.

I have not attended the school yet because I am still unsure because of the "house school" situation. I looked at their website which to me needs to be updated.

I am in the military and I always wanted to learn more about skincare and makeup artistry. I want a school that will be flexible with my schedule because their are days when I have to work 12 hours then there are days when I am off 15 days out the month. What I liked about the skincare center was the instructor was willing to work with me with my crazy schedule, which is a plus.

You can take the bus but you need a car because the buses do not run like they are suppose to. The school is off of route one in VA. Let me know if you have any more questions.

I have my Master Esthetic License. Great Wolf Resort $8 a new company in Fairfax $9 and I have a lot of excellent work experience outside of the esthetic field. I find a lot employer in VA want the most educated and experience people but do not want to pay. How unfortunate! I am starting to look elsewhere.

I remember vistiting the house/school this was before VA licensed esthetician. The drawback for me was the owner's snipped attitude when I began to ask indepth question about the length of time to complete her program. Her answer was, you are finish when I say you are finish.

Do talk with each school about your schedule and ask to see their class times and will your schedule of completion be effected (you owning more money if you finish after your completion date).

Have you looked at going to Maryland to train?

The owner seemed like a knowledgeable person. My decision not to attend her school was her attitude when I began to ask indepth question, such as what would my completion date be and her answer was you will be finished when I say you are finished.

Thank you very much Meli329 and Ann for your answers!!! Right know I'm shopping for the schools in VA area. In Maryland... actually I'm planing to move and work in DC area that's why I choose VA. Also I found "Esthetic Institute" in Vienna VA. Do you have any information about this school?
And "French Institute" I also consider like one of the options. What do you think?

Anna,

I agree with Ann in Woodbridge, the lady was nice to me but I also notice she had an attitude with other people. I want to work with someone who is patient and pleasant to work with.

I visited Eethetic Institute...it's also a house. It's in a nice community, if I am not mistaken its on Gallows Rd close to one of the malls (Mclean or Fairoaks). It is family owned business. The admission rep is very knowledgeable and very educated. His wife works along with him.

I noticed they get a lot of clients for facials. The admission rep told me I am wasting money trying to earn my master degree and that I could be making a lot more money becoming an esthetician. Everyone working there have nice skin. I noticed their appearance because if I am going to get trained, I think the trainer should have nice looking skin. That's just my oppinion. Other than that comment, they seem like good people. I got a free facial by the sudent and she did a good job. The tuition is not that expensive like all the other well known schools in the VA/DC/MD area.

The website to Esthetic Institute is deceiving because it is not a big school like it appeared to be on the website. It's a house, with other home businesses in the area.

I did not visit the Frensh Institute yet.

I did talk to different schools about my schedule. Some say it is ok and they can work with me but we know they want the money. I feel like these schools say they understand but I do not think they do. I keep explaining to them and showing them my schedule is always changing.

I visited Aveda in DC, and I felt like they were pressuring me to sign their documents, which was an agreement to pay them. Of course I was not trying to sign some documents that I was unsure of. I was planning to attend during Spring term. I visited Aveda in November 07 and can you believe they wanted me to start making payments for the training until I can attend their school! I took that as a red flag. I felt like they were all about getting their money from students. They also kept saying I should get a sallie mae loan and I told them I did not want to take out a loan, so they asked for credit cards and all kinds of things. So that was my experience with them. As much as I liked the school and their mission/concepts, I did not feel comfortable with them.

I am still doing research to see which school I want to attend but so far if I had to go to a school now, I would go with the skin care institute because the owner was willing to work with my schedule.

Thank you Melissa.I'm going to meet owner in Esthetic Institute on Monday and talk about financial aid and see school. On my today research I also found "Mylandre Institute of Cosmetology" it seems to be owned by professionals from Europe and USA.I called them and got to talk to Milen ... I don't know ,I wasn't very impressed after our conversation. I was asking her question and all answers which I got, "I need to see you,I can talk to you only after our meeting" I didn't get any answers to my questions about the classes schedule, prises and condition ... so , but I going to check out this school too.

Anybody has experience from this school "Mylandre Institute of Cosmetology" ?. It's in Alexandria.

Mellisa I did visit Esthetic institute. I love it. I like the staff ,there attitude and etc. So I ... sing up for classes. I'll start in sept. 2-nd. And let you guys know ,how it's going.
I went to Mylandre Institute, actually it's salon and classes most for the barbers. Lady which provide esthetic classes seems to be very knowledgeable and busy with the clients. She is French and I'm not American also. I met her at her salon and it was very hard to understand her . I got such an impression that she doesn't have particular program to teach a student.
So may be she is the best (what she was doing it's showing her certificates from different schools) ,but I don't think that I would be able to get something from her.
So stop my choice on Esthetic institute.
Wish me Good Luck!!! :)

I just try to research and see if the school is good for me. I am in the military so my schedule is crazy at times. A lot of schools have set time and hours and one of the things I am looking for is flexibility.

I spoke to the admission reps for Aveda in Dc and they kept telling me that they are flexible but something in my gut told me they are just saying that to get me into the school. I explained to them that I have different days off every week. I wish I can change my schedule but it is set up that way. I guess I did not get the assurance I needed so I decided not attend their school. I am happy I decided not to attend. I was undecided.

My point is, you want to be comfortable and make sure the school is right for you.

I am currently looking for an esthetician program in the DC, or Baltimore. I have been seriously thinking about Yvonne De Vilar only because the make up portion of there program seems very in depth if one wanted to pursue a career full time as a make up artist. However, is it important to be licensed in microdermabrasion, Chemical Peels, and Body Treatments? And being that there program is "two tier" as I read on this forum would my license not be valid in states such as NY? Any information on this stuff would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Just out of interest...when ere you at Aveda? I graduated from there but feel very cheated. When i got my transcripts and saw all the things that we were supposed to be taught for the DC board (and the number of hours required for each item) I felt very cheated and like I had wasted $10k.

I attended Yvonne de Vilar for the Microdermabrasion class. The owner and the instructor's knowledge base left me wanting more info. I feel very confident with the training I gained there. I will take other advance classes as they become available there.

See VA website for licensing. If your training program was 600 hours, you will need to show work experience or take advance classes to gave you Master License.

Good Luck

When considering any type of instructional course you should realize success depends not only on the merits of the course of instruction, the student?s aptitude and diligence.
I attend a school in Virginia, Ana Visage Institutes in Great Falls, the best choice I ever made. I know there are schools that don?t provide the right training nor allow you to work on clients. But at Ana Visage we had a lot of structure, I was able to work on clients and even get evaluated by them afterwards. I know that with the experience that I received from that school I will be able to work anywhere, especially Ms. Nahid has a lot of connections in spa and salon industry and job place the students before they graduate, or hire them till she finds them a good match. She is very flexible in every possible way to accommodate the student?s schedule. I am a mother and work; convenience of her flexibility was the key and helps me to get all the hours and credits. It could be complicated to choose the right school and to make the right choice, but if you want to join a great school go to Ana Visage Institutes you will love it with the new technology, machines, products, seminars and Doctor Guest speakers.

I was pleasantly welcomed when I went to receive the tour and complementary massage and facial by students in their beautiful spa looking clinic. I was eligible for $3400.00 in Pell Grant that I don't have to return since they are the only accredited institution in massage therapy and esthetics. Then Kamilia did my FAFSA and got my pin #. Then I got $2666.00 in subsidized Stafford student loan and $2333.00 in unsubsidized Stafford student's loan from department of education and treasury department that I don't have to return until 6 months after I graduate and then pay $50 a month, since I am a single parent and mother of 2 boys. My dream come true, NO other school could offer these benefits and follow up on me like Ana Visage Institutes did.

They stand above the crowd, talk about class. They are #1 . Director and the teachers are experience and patient and job placed me, Ms. Amy knows her staff and the place runs smoothly like a clock, very professional with first class education, and got it all covered with Financial Aid for me.

Kathy Jones in Falls Church, Virginia said: I ATTENDED CLASSES AT ITERNATIONAL DERMAL INSTITUTE AS WELL AND WAS TOLD GREAT THING ABOUT MY CURRENT SCHOOL FROM ANA VISAGE STUDENTS AND THEY WERE MORE INFORMED AND PREPARED THAN ANY OTHER SCHOOL. SO I DONT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. THE PROGRAM IS GREAT AND TEACHERS ARE VERY EXPERIENCED, INFORMED AND PREPARED. YOU CAN?T BASE YOUR REVIEW ON HEARSAY. I SUGGEST THAT YOUR COMMENT IS AD TO PROMOT THE COMPETETOR.
