It's actually better now that it has gone subscription only. It is now limited to esthetic and spa related professionals. There are many reasons this is a plus for licensed pros - you are not giving away free education and info to the MLM sellers, your clients aren't going to able to see your posts, there are more and more big names in the industry that are now joining due to the privacy and that means more education, members are now more willing to share more openly knowing that what they share isn't accessible to any and everyone on the internet. Plus the members there are positive, great resources, very willing to help each other and there are going to more perks and benefits to come in the future. It really is a valuable resource and community. |

You get to network with estys who are very successful and know their stuff. Not knocking this board, but to each his own..... |

I was a memeber of the SSB for a while. I joined to help others. However, I am no longer on the board because I can't see paying to help others when I can do that on other boards. You will find that amost all members of a paid board will be on free boards, but very few the other way around. You can also try: groups.msn.com/estheticiantoesthetician groups.msn.com/estheticiantoesthetician groups.msn.com/estheticiantoesthetician All of these are free. |

Yes, I've been on each of those boards listed above. However, I choose not to spend my time there for many reasons, including unprofessional and unethical behavior on at least one, self promotion by the owner of another, etc. I find the information shared of great value and quality and the people on Spa Biz Board to be very positive, professional, and helpful. I've made many friends on SBB across the country and even in other countries. Magazine subscriptions for LNE, Dermascope and others are $35 for a once a month issue. $25 is a small amount to pay for quality education. SBB is going to be growing and offering much more than just a message board. I'm not trying to knock the other boards and paying isn't for everyone. I'm just offering another view. |

I love it now that it's gone private!!! It's a lot busier that's for sure, I can barely keep up with all the posts! I guess people are just more comfortable now. I understand tho people's hesitancy if they haven't tried SBB. I wouldn't pay for any of the other boards listed above so if that's what your used to I would be scared to try. |

Jeff, you are funny.
I am a member of SBB since its conception and it changed my professional life. I recently got promoted into Lead Esthetician at one of the most famous spas in USA, thanks to selfless support and guidance from my pals from SBB (thank you GIRLS!!!). I also made priceless friendship with other Estheticians that live all over the country. I tried hard, but can't remember ever reading let alone taking your advice and all that I can remember is that you promoted your DVDs there. Frankly my dear, I don't think you will be missed! And those free boards are like any free stuff - worthless! |

Oh the personal attacks. I must have hit a nerve. Join all the boards. I don't have to defend them or the others on them. The proof will be in the pudding. Search the archives and past posts. Let each judge for themselves. Participate where you can learn. I'm sure that SSB will be packed with knowledge and information since they stated "get hundreds of dollars in info." One of the biggest complaints I hear from esty's is for paying for classes that taught nothing or were disappointed. Is this another one? Congradulations on being Lead Esty. But you didn't mention which "famous spa" in the US it was. I know it isn't La Costa or Costa Del Surf. The are not in LA area. What made it famous? I'd love to visit next time I am in the area and experience it. Join all the free boards. If you learn nothing...then you haven't lost anything! |
|

I think Jeff is right. You get a lot of information and support from the *free* boards. I am not impressed that everyone of you are bragging that you are paying money for a board that may or may not be better. IMHO. |

Certainly no one would suggest either is not helpful, especially to newer estheticians. And having a subscription board does tend to weed out those who may be our customers, or worse yet...those AWFUL ;^) mlm'ers who would seek out our secrets to help promote non-pro products (GASP!). As I understand it so far, while the number of folks has diminished, the postings have doubled. Coincidence? Maybe, but I don't think so. Take care, lpt |

Where to join or not to join is an individual decision. If you want FREE info, then join FREE boards. If you don't mind paying less than .07 per day for info, then join the subscription-only board. My personal choice is to belong to a board where there is privacy from the general public, MLMs, & others who are not licensed skincare professionals. |
|
Jeff B in Dallas, Texas 3 months ago |
Personally, I don't worry about the public or MLMr's seeing my posts. Plus, there are many who are not "licensed skincare specialists" who are important contributors such as physicians, chemists, legislators, students, people who are considering going into the field and has questions. So let's recap. For professinals: SUBSCRIPTION ONLY: FREE groups.msn.com/estheticiantoesthetician
NON-PROFESSIONAL self-help pub123.ezboard.com/bmakeupandrelatedindustries
There are also many message boards across the world that are free. Jeff |
|
cbs in Salinas, California 3 months ago |
SBB may be limited to professionals, only, but that does not mean estheticians only(except for one forum). Vendors, manufacturers, chemists, physicians, students and more are welcome and encouraged to join. There will be a "vendor of the month" forum that will include a question and answer section and highlight that particular vendors products or services that month. One of the things that as a licensed esthetician I worry about is someone who doesn't know anything about skin buying products on the internet or elsewhere and using them on themselves or others. Maybe they read about it in a message board, even though most emphasize that training is essential before using them, and then decide to try it themself. With the internet it is so very easy to find out information about someone or even track them down just from a bit of info they might give about themself. I prefer a private site where I'm more comfortable saying more about myself, my business and my life. These are just a couple of examples of why a private board has a place, though, as said before, it's not for everyone. Each person must decide for themself. |

I have to comment here and say that the free boards are awesome. I have met lots of great esties, gotten lots of pertinent information and advice. Its a friendly atmosphere . Jeff has provided lots of great information and not just "promoted his dvds". I don't think I saw him do that even once on the free boards.

The subscription-based SBB now has some very high profile leaders in the esthetics industry. These are individuals who did not feel comfortable sharing on free public boards. The board's membership fee is worth way more than the 14 cents/day that it costs. |
|
Jeff B in Dallas, Texas 3 months ago |
Actually E2E is not a public board. You have to apply and give your license number or a reason for being on the board. |
|

The public may not 'post' on E2E, but as I understand it, they can 'view'. |

As with anything, when there is a "tiff", there are two sides to that particular coin. Maybe three. One side. The other side. And then there is the truth...which usually resides somewhere in the middle. More than a few have left several boards, and have their own personal preferences, likes and dislikes. The is something for everyone! |

They are on a subscription only board precisely because they want to contribute privately. It would be a breach of trust to divulge their names here. I hope you understand. Yes, they have to pay like everyone does. |

I believeit is pretty clear that there is not an all-or-nothing approach with regard to whether a board that is free, or subscription has a superior advantage. Maybe just a different advantage.. As has been said already, and apparently needs repeating, there is a place for both free boards, and as some of us have discovered, the subscription board really is different (note I did not say "better", just "different"). I know we all could spend boat loads of money on learning...DVD's, Classes, Trade Shows, etc. It all adds up, I know VERY well! What I have discovered for me personally, is that I have found the in-depth training to be an incredible value compared to some of the other classes and trainings I have attended, and will continue to attend. But the subscription board is not for everyone. |

Are you suggesting that the subscription board offers "in-depth training" on subjects? If so, then I can understand the justification for fees. Who is paid for providing this training. To my knowledge the only ones benefiting are the ones who own the board. The one question that I keep asking is "What do I get for my money?" |

Yes, I am stating exactly that, JeffB. No one is paid for this training. It is voluntary.
But again, a subscription board is not for everyone. |

I am the sole owner of SpaBizBoard.com and so I am the one who can best respond to Jeff's comments about SpaBizBoard "owners" benefiting financially. Then perhaps we can finally put this issue to rest and get back to the admirable goals of ALL esthetics message boards -- free and subsciption. Some of the SpaBizBoard subscription fees go toward administration and maintenance of the board. The rest goes to funding NASN (National Aesthetics & Spa Network) which is a non-profit organization which holds FREE educational opportunities in 5 states two times per year. And when I say "free," I mean free to the attendees because SpaBizBoard money helps fund these events. I am the director of the California Chapter and I can tell you it is NOT free to the directors. In the future if our membership continues to grow, my goal is to fund social events for SpaBizBoard members in connection with various esthetic trade shows. And Jeff, to specifically answer your question about "in-depth training," SpaBizBoard offers a vendor of the month event where a vendor is invited into a specific forum in the Private Area set up for the purpose of interacting with our Private Members, who are licensed estheticians only/no reps. For that month, our Private Members learn all about the company history, products, ingredients, protocols, etc. I hope I have now answered all of your questions. In closing, I want to say that I am not soliciting new members and I am not claiming that SpaBizBoard is better in any way than any and all of the other boards, nor that a private subscription board is better than a free board. Those of us who have been estheticians for a decade as I have can attest that when we were coming up in the ranks there was not much out there for us beyond the Milady textbooks. Now we have so many fabulous ways to learn. We are all in this together and we are only as strong as our weakest link. And there is room for us all. |

SBB is, in my opinion, the BEST board for professional estheticians and skin care professionals. I have been to all of the others and they are not worth much. Especially the board where the owner, whom I understand is not even a working esthetician and has struggled all of her supposed career to even get a job, is giving out information like she knows what she's talking about. What a hoot! But worse yet is the new estys who take what she says like it is gospel because they don't know any different. And what about this new board for spa owners? That's even more incredible -- a spa owner who has had trouble making it charging like $39 a MONTH to dole out his advice on the spa business. Please. |

I agree with JeffB. I want to know who the experts are on the paid part before I part with any of my money. Are they worth me paying for, or should I save my money and buy dvd's from video source? I, too, want to know names. |
|

You may prefer to save your money and buy DVD's. If they want you to know who they are, they will say so. It would be inappropropriate for any others on the board to divulge that information. It's about respecting their privacy. |

Yes you answered my questions and concerns very well. After having been a member of 3 esthetician 'boards', I can tell you that there are vast differences between a 'free message board' & a 'subscription networking & education resource'. I believe that 14 cents per day for the knowledge that I gain from SBB is well worth it. If you don't think that you will get your money's worth by joining, then don't...buy DVDs. I don't think that you can purchase a single DVD for $50, can you? I truly hope that noone from SBB gives up our experts names. Non-believers don't need to know... |

I am the Midwest Coordinator for the National Aesthetic Spa Network and can personally attest to the contributions from spabizboard to this organization. Other boards I contacted would not even let me post about this free event on their board, which is one of the MANY reasons I believe in what SBB is trying to accomplish and support wholeheartedly. If you would like more information about NASN please visit denisefuller.biz or go to spabizboard.com and scroll down to where is says NASN-National Aesthetic & Spa Network. I think then you may begin to understand why members feel this board is so special. |

As for me, if I were one of the professionals on the board, I would advertise it. Got to get your name out so you are considered a leader in the world of esthetics. That to me is good marketing for yourself. As for the monthly vendor classes, why would I want a class from a vendor that I don't buy product from? Are they on there to promote their companies. I don't think any company would be on the board if they weren't trying to make a sale. Now as to classes in 5 states, what are the 5 states? I'm in Oklahoma. Are there going to be events here? If so, when? I also don't understand why you aren't promoting this board. To have a business you have to advertise and get new blood in the door. How can you have free classes if you're not bringing in more money? I'm not telling you how to run your business, but this has been my experience if running a business. All IMHO. |
|

SBB is not about 'self-promotion' as are some of the 'other' boards. You need to think outside the box when it comes to 'vendor classes'. There is more to esthetic education than 'products'. None of the vendors in the forum 'push' their products. They're all first class professionals. All of the NASN event information is available to the public for viewing on SBB. SBB grows it membership through word of mouth referrals. SRC, the owner of SBB, is very business savvy & doesn't see the need to advertise. |

So i'm still wondering why almost every person that thinks free boards are drama and the SpaBizBoard is so much better is here on the FREE board writing this info. Who cares which one is better! we all prefer diff boards.... okay so move on. Some of us can't afford the sub boards and free info is just fine for now. All i'm wondering is if you really don't like this board and think another is better... Why are you here? Why are you HERE pleading your case about how you like something better and that its worth "every penny" It makes no sense to me! We like free info you think "free boards are like any free stuff - worthless!" Okay?!

Audrey, Did you ever see the movie Dances w/Wolves? Do you know the scene were Kevin Costner aka DwW says to Stone Calf, "Who does Stands w/a Fist mourn for?" Stone Calf says it's not polite to speak of the dead but you are new...." Even a flow chart couldn't diagram the many nations that have been borne from A Esthetician Group on MSN. It sounds like you aren't really interested in the history -- but without the history (that started back in 2000 when I joined), the drama comment might not hold the same feelings for all. If you had been around that long -- it would. And let me say, many moons have come and gone since then. Many screen names have gone to winter in their final resting places. This original post alone is 3 months old. And that is how I personally came to post here last night. So, 3 months ago, after seeing this thread on several boards, I clicked a link here that sent updates of this particular thread, to my email address. Last night after financial assumptions were, wrongly, levied at the owner of SBB I posted my first post here. I found it particularly dramatic that it was Jeff, who was in fact making financial gain from multiple boards off his DVDs yet falsely accusing SRC (who was paying costs and donating back to the professional development of women in this industry)! In addition to all the other melting down that has been happening for the past three months, what is it about the words drama, free and penny, from me that has set you off? Don't the other derogatory words over the past three months even slightly raise your bp? Anywhoooo, I guess you really wouldn't be interested in my definition of quality information at this point in time. So sorry I didn't check my email remotely today. :-) |

I visit most all the boards I can find (subscription or not), and they all are special, but if you think for one minute that it's ok to wrongfully accuse someone, and then get ticked off when they defend themselves... well that's just board nazzism. Look at the first message; it's from a sweet gal with a big heart who found something that has also helped her (along with this board) and wanted to share. That's all. If a waitress offered you some ketchup, but you didn't like ketchup -- you wouldn't yell at her; she was only trying to be to be helpful -- just like the waitress. At the end, Jeff and the Spabizboard owner were both professional & very eloquent. Well done! Thank you -- this was most fascinating! |

I agree with CLC above. Mostly it seems the comments were just to explain why SBB went subscription and the benefits that a pro only site offers.
Its obviously completely a matter of choice where one chooses to spend their time participating on a message board- though it does seem that like attracts like.... I read both MSN boards everyday and interact with my girls on SBB the most. I have know some of these women for 5 years!!
** a few more Cents.** ~I hope Jeff comes back to SBB because he has a lot of vaulable information. ~The only "mean girl" comments on this thread are very plain to see. |

Holy cow! What wasted energy. Paid or free, I'm open to both. What I'm not open to is this petty high school drama that reflects poorly on the members of either board who participate in this useless garbage. To infer that those of us who don't know the full history just couldn't understand, is sad and immature. Don't' we have more important matters to address? Are we that bored in our personal and professional lives? Lets get back to business, leave this embarrassing useless behavior behind, and move on to more important issues such as legislation designed to hurt us, State Board issues, products, education etc. I would love to make new friends on all the boards by addressing the important issues that directly effect our business rather than bonding through immature trash talking. |
