Hi, I work in a fairly high-paying but incredibly stressful office job & am considering a new career in esthetics. I'd love to chat with someone in Portland, Oregon, who is currently employed in the field. A few questions I have, for starters: How do you like it - what are the best & worst things about the job? How competitive is it? If you were trained in Portland, what school did you go to, and how was your experience? Also, I certainly plan to take a pay cut, but am curious to know what sort of income one can expect, both starting out & long term. Any advice, feedback, insight would be greatly appreciated! |

To answer some of your questions, I love my job. LOVE IT. I went into this business because it is what I wanted to do, not a job, but a passion. I work for myself, so being my own boss is fabulous. The bad part is when it is slow. It is as competitive as any other job where you rely on clients to support you. Everyone wants clients. I went to school in Portland, but I wouldn't call it training. They put you in front of a book, make you take tests, and tell you to try things out. It is a joke. You really learn once you are out there in the real world actually working. School was a waste of time and money, but you have to attend and graduate to get your license. Then get facials from people who are recommended to you, attend workshops, practice on your friends, and learn from who ever will teach you. Income depends on what your goals are. If you are working for yourself or a salon. I have no idea if that helps you or not. I would be happy to answer any other questions for you as well. Good luck with your decision. |
