I need help!!! I need advice concerning medical esthetics.,(I do have bachelor degree in food science), but I realy want to have a job in skin care, my area no one person know what is the medical esthetician!!!! and what education i should have... Even our dermotologist ( we have chast one in city, and he works part time here) doesn't know that this profesion exists :-( I start to worry about it why we do not have these people in Kansas? I can't find information on Cosmetology Board official webside what education a person needs to have for the license. I do understand that I would need to finish college as a RN and other classes like esthetician...

There are several other threads going on right now about the difference between "medical", "clinical" and esthetics in general. You might want to read those as there's already been quite a bit of discussion recently on this topic. |

In Kansas, there is only esthetician licensing. All you need to do is go to one of the schools that are offering skin care. The Board have a listing:
The difference between medical esthetician and regular esthetician is title only. You can have your own business and perform facials, peels and all the services that are allowed by the Board. The nursing school would help if you want to assist a doctor in peformiing laser procedures or injections (botox, juvederm, ect..) Unfortunatly, becoming a "medical esthetician" would not do anything for you since you could not performed the same procedures as a nurse in a derm's office.

There is a big difference between the general aesthetician and the " Medical Aesthetician" . Although Medical Aesthetics is not yet a license from the state level; it is just a matter of time. A medical aesthetician has garnered tremendous aesthetic and medical skills/knowledge and it has merged into a competive role for physicians to hire this kind of skin care specialist. A medical aesthetician is able to perform clinical skin care protocols that address more than " pampering facials" .

I want to thank you all of you!!! I'm so happy to have so many nice and helpful responses! I understand that my question was difficalt and hard to answer... I moved to Garden City, KS 4 years ago was shocked when I figured that no one provides skin care in my area. We do not have any spas, we have just one dermatologist who started to work in our city less then a year ago. From the responses I understood that to be own my own it will be not much help to have

Dear Olga, My first successful skin care center was developed right after I graduated from school so many years ago. I was the first in the city, first in the state and first clinical skin care practice that integrated both the aesthetics and medical perspectives. I developed good relations with physicians and hair dressers. I did not practice nursing any longer than I felt was necessary to create my own busines with my vision for Medical Aesthetics I wanted Physicians to respect what aestheticians could contribute to the positive outcomes of their patients. Nursing was an expereince. Aesthetics is a journey. Medical Aesthetics challenges both sides of the coin. You can become successful....you have to believe in yourself...have the right credentials...and be ready for a competitive role. Anna D. Rinehart

I am a Medical Aesthetican working in Los Angeles, CA. Technically when you work in medicine not a medspa or spa, but a medical facility plastic surgery of dermatology which I work under the team of doctors and doing more invasive procedures it is called a Medical or Clinical Aesthetician. Supposedly there are advanced schools that are coming about to gain that actual advanced degree/license that will legally say Medical Aesthetician. I am going to find an accredited school and go and get it, probably on line.

A medical esthetician is just a licensed esthetician who works under a doctor of a field such as dermatology or plastic surgery. There is no special licensing to become a medical esthetician, it just means you are working under a doctors license, therefore you are able to give medical grade facials and peels. The doctor you work with can either give you advanced training in this field or you can take classes after you have become a licensed esthetician. Basically, you just have to find a doctor that will take you under his or her wing. You will gain a lot of knowledge and experience working under a doctor so you can give advanced skin treatments and gain more credibility in this industry! |

A school may give advanced esthetics or Clinical Esthetics, but only the medical profession can give anything relating to the word "Medical". You can work alone, but you MUST use the word "Clinical Esthetician". But be very careful an not use the term "Licensed" in front of it. You can only use this wording as it is printed on your license. |

Are you a Bio-Chemist as well? Jeff |

Could you please share your findings on medical aesthetic education. Do you know about NECA's certification program? I look forward to your response. Pamela

Anna (or anyone with the knowledge), I'm hoping you could take some time and help me. I've been an esthetician for 4 years. I started in NYC, moved to CO and am now going to Austin (husband going to Grad School). Moving around in this field is the worst thing one can do--getting clients, gaining loyalty and then loosing clients. The thought of moving again makes me reevaluate my career and think about becoming an RN. I'd like to be successful in the medical arena (possibly work for a Dermatologist) and feel this is the only way to do so--would you agree? I mean, I would hate to go to nursing school only doing so to further my esthetics career, but feel there is no other way. I WISH there was another way, something VALID that held up on paper and was WIDELY ACCEPTED. HELP! P-H |

I have a BS, and doing some research on a new career. Being I live in California, I believe I have to have an Aesthetician Licence to be a laser tech....am I correct? I found that information on the National Laser Institute Website--school in Arizona or Las Vegas. I was wondering what an accurate income bracket is for a person that just graduates and gets a job in Los Angeles and how hard is it to get a job right after school? I noticed Alexandria works as a medical esthetician but didn't do training for it--is looking for more school....works at a dr. office. Why get more training if you have the job already. Is the industry still in full swing in LA or slowing down? I know i have so many questions but I don't want to jump in without doing my homework. So |

There are some which require nursing degrees of which (if my memory serves me) CA is one of them. You may be able if you are working for a doctors under his license. You will have to check it out. |

Hi everyone! I am not sure if this question has been answered yet, but I am going to ask it and hopefully someone will be able to guide me in the right direction. I received my multi-media and production diplomas and work as a freelance makeup artist. I love making people feel beautiful it is just the best feeling in the world. However I really want to further my education and start working more on the medical side as a medical esthetician. So..I am not sure if it is best for me to go and get a degree in nursing, and receive my esthetician license. Or go to the Florida College of Natural Health which offers a Paramedical Esthetician Program. I feel that there are just so many different schools and options, I really want to make the best decision when it comes to furthering my education. PLEASE HELP!!!! ASAP!!! :) |

Angela, Thats exactly what I was thinking!! $20,000 is alot of money! However dont get me wrong I have no problem spending money where I know my education is going to be top of the line, and money well spent.
However I am still wondering if "lets say" I decide to become a registered nurse what happens next? do you then specialize in skin care??? or just attend the workshops??? or still have to get your estheticians license??? hmmm... so many questions i know! Thanks for your help so far though :) |

Hello, I am going to a wonderful esthetician school to get my license and was researching all my options to further my education once I am done and found something called Electrolysis. I am curious to know what procedures I can do with this license. I believe it takes about 360 hours in Florida to obtain this license and wanted to know what I can expect to be doing with this type of training as well. I know laser hair removal is something I can do, but I was wondering if anyone knew what else is exactly possible with this. |

I am a licensed esthetician and makeup artist in tampa since 2004. i have always worked on a freelance basis and am wanting to break into the medical side of esthetics. Problem is i have never become established in one salon or spa working as a full time esthetician. I am also a student at the University of South Florida majoring in general business. I have been considering maybe getting some type certification or continuing education in the medical side of the field whether it be MA or RN etc. Not really sure what to do but i would like to work at a derm's or plastic surgeons office or hospital post op. or pre op. etc. HOW DO I DO THIS! i have been breaking my head trying to figure out the best step to take without wasting the most time and money considering i'm still also working on my BA. WHAT DO I DO! I have wanted to get a BA as a PA but Tampa doesn't offer a program at USF and I don't really want to move. Any advice?? |
