Im not sure what type of setting I will want and I just want to make a wise decision as far as the job market goes. Any advice? Thanks! Go medical route, its more informative. You can always educate yourself with products, it is more lucrative to have a medical/ aesthetic background, which you can incorporate natural products as well. The difference is understanding the uses of the machines/equipment. I went to the carsten-aveda school with an understanding that i would become well informed of both. Well, I wasnt! So afterwards, I went to laser school and and an advance medical school to become diversified in several different modules of aesthetics. Good Luck, hope you found the right school! |

I'm about to start classes at Aveda in Soho...I really couldn't figure out why anyone would even go to Carsten-Aveda because it seems like a hair school that added on an esthi program. Even the website says so...so I wouldn't even think about their skin program. I hear good reviews about Aveda in Soho. But it does seem like Christine Valmy and Atelier are better known and have longer-standing reputations. Although I spoke to an Atelier grad and she was disappointed in Ms. Hansen's frequent plastic surgery and attempts to hide it while working at the front desk. She said the education was good, but she didn't feel that it was a good representation of beauty. I would have considered Atelier, but I was not interested in the medical side of esthetics. I may go for their laser program one day. I specifically chose Aveda in Soho because of the natural products. Every school uses one or a few specific lines so that really doesn't bother me. I just didn't want to use products that I personally wouldn't use on my own skin. I plan on either making my own products for personal use (I'm also a massage therapist), or using a natural line that's already out there. However I did ask major spa HR rep which schools she recommended and her choices were Atelier, Christine Valmy, and Aveda. She said you can't go wrong with either one. But she did say NO to Lia Schorr and told me NOT to go there. |

Hello Fellow New Yorkers, I have been reading the post here and haven't read much about jobs in NYC. I went to Esthetics school in Georgia, got a great education. Certified in MicroDerm, Microcurrent and LED treatments. My question to you all is.. How does the job market look in NYC for Estheticians? How much does a NYC Esthetician make a year?
Thank You in Advance your option and useful information..

I graduated from Carsten Aveda Institute I took the cosmetology and esthetics courses( they don't offer medical program) and I really believe that it was the best choice of my life. and the education was fantastic! I don't think the person that make the comment (peaved from oakland NJ) is beeing honest, you are making things you can check the teachers licenses in the admisions office or the Directors office and they are licensed teachers for Esthetics and Cosmetology soooooo you dont know what you are talking about. |

Only the lazy students read magazines in the school, when you are paying for an education you should not be allowed to be sitting around and do nothing and the instructors at Carstens never allowed that. I'm a Carsten Aveda alumni (just completed my 600 hours) no one gave me extra hours so that I can graduate! They allowed graduates to come back and practice with out charging for it. They give a lot of free services and we were able to practice, which was a great practice for us. |

Hello everyone, i'm considering going to Aveda institute in SOHO, and just wanted to know how the employment outlook is for a recent graduate. I want to get my license and start working part time until i finish my business degree in college and i would like to know if it's a good idea to look for part time work as an esthetician as oppose to full time. |
|
daniv1 in Brooklyn, New York 15 months ago |
I attended Atelier in the full time program last year (2010). In a matter of 4 months of hard work I graduated from Atelier Esthetique and immediately passed the state board written and practical exams. I had a new career!! I got my first job at a spa a week after graduating. If it wasn't for the staff at Atelier Esthetique I would not have been as prepared for my exams or for my new career! I also took the ITEC advanced class (2011 graduate) and earned the highest diploma an esthetician can receive worldwide. |

Has anyone graduated from the Dermalogica esthetics program? I am interested in that one and Aveda. Any opinions? |

MR2011 in Brooklyn, New York 14 months ago |
Dermalogica is excellent as a brand and if they took financial aid, I would have probably gone there rather than Aveda. I do plan on going to the Int'l Dermal Insitute for advanced training. Aveda is wonderful because they train you as if you are actually working in a spa and you learn retailing and everything. And they do focus on hands-on mostly because from what I have been told, Aveda does utilize more massage in general. But you will also learn things like chakras and acupressure meridians as well. If that isn't your thing(lucky for me) you may gloss over it. However, they do equip you with all of the knowledge you need to work in a medispa setting as well because some of the teachers themselves do that outside. Job outlook has been positive for Aveda grads since they do work hard to develop good relationships with business owners. |

Just wondering what program you decided and if you are happy with it? I am trying to make the same decision, choosing between a more natural course with Aveda or going the more medical route using more machines, peels, dermbrasion etc.. Also did you have trouble finding a job? |

I work full-time and have two kids so a full-time program or an evening program do not work for me. My only options are the weekends which leave me to choose between Lia Schorr and Atelier Esthetique. I visited both schools and thought that they were both "OK" (but not as nice as Aveda). Can anyone provide input as to which school is better in terms of education, reputation etc? |

Hi I'm thinking about attending New York School of Esthetics in Tarrytown, NY... does anyone have any info they can share with me on this school or Capri Beauty School (that's another school I was looking into)? Thanks for your help! Alexis |

alexis in Yorktown Heights, New York said: Hi Hey to Alexis...I know that the school in Tarrytown is SKIN only and they have a spa or something like that. Capri is for hair (with a side in skin), so it all depends what you want.. if you want hair go to Capri, if you want skin care go to Tarrytown. I went in the city to Lia Schorr, not the best or the worst, don't know if you are willing to go to the city. I do know that the two graduates I worked with from Tarrytown, know more then anyone else. But like I said, it depends if you want skin or hair. Good Luck |

One of the estheticians in my doctor's office went there and LOVED it. She could not say enough about the school and thought that they were very professional. I took a tour of the facility and found it to be very professional and an overall nice facility. They are always looking to add classes and keep up with changes in the industry. I was thinking about the school myself but am still not sure as to whether or not to go for a change in career yet. I hope this helps. |

I'm thinking of taking both the Basic & Advanced make up courses at Christine Valmy In NYC. Has anyone taken them? Does the school help with job placement. Is it worth it or it is the same as a job at Sephora? Are there many openings for positions for a certified make up artist? I'm skeptical and confused... |

Your questions are difficult to answer as makeup application is really a very general term which is used in a very wide variety of areas and require combination as well as specific skills. Some may require a certificate or a license. Some do not. In what areas do you want to work? Makeup Artist - Demonstrator (where you show customers how to apply and apply makeup) Commercial Makeup Artist - (where you are paid to apply makeup for a fee) Media Makeup Artist - Working with still Photography Theatrical Makep Artist - Designs and supervises actors for stage productions. Motion Picture and television Motion Picture and television Special Effects (FX) IMHO I've listed these in the order of level of knowledge and training (Beginning with the least to the most (which usually includes each above it)). In other words, if you are considering commercial, you would want to first have experience in Demonstrator as the skills learned will be an important part of Commercial Makeup Artistry. |

Thanks for the response Jeff! I've always been into makeup, but I was never sure what I wanted to do with it. I really want to get into an esthetics program, but unfortunately, with the time and money it requires, I'm unable to go right now. |

Jeff B I have seen many of your comments in my browsing the internet and value your opinions. Maybe you could help us with a decision. My daughter just graduated from college with a Visual Arts/Photography degree. Her dad is a Facial Plastic Surgeon with a Skin Care Department that could use a good photographer to better the over all program at the office..She could do before/after pictures of all procedures whether surgical, laser, Skin Care procedures, document cases, etc, etc.

Hello, I am new to this board and I am trying to decide on a school to attend. I went to Atelier to check out the school and while they seem on the up and up I noticed there were some issues and frustrations going on amongst the staff as well as a lack of organization. I like the fact that they seem well versed in their curriculum, however I think I will check out Aveda as an alternative because I think that's more of my personality.. P.S Annette Hanson's picture is ALL over the place...diva |

Hi everyone! I love seeing all the feedback and I'm so glad I found this board. I am currently looking at Gary Manuel Aveda Seattle and Aveda NY,NY. I'm really open to cooing anywhere in the country I just want the best esthetics program available. I've heard a lot of you say you did continuing education for advanced medical, laser etc. Does Average offer continuing education for this? If not what are the best advanced studies schools in the country? |

I'm currently attending Christine Valmy in NYC for the 600 hour Esthetics course and LOVE IT! I'm half way through the program and it's the best choice I made. I talked to people who went to both Altelier and Aveda. They said Altelier had a high drop out rate and Aveda made you work lots of extra hours that you didn't get credit for. I checked out Altelier and hated the school, it looked like a dungeon and when I was getting a tour I felt like the students were trying to stare holes into my body. CV just moved into a new location and is absolutely beautiful. Amazing views of the Empire State Building and NYC skyline from the clinic. The teachers and great and everyone is so friendly. The students are a diverse group. I'm learning a lot and really having fun. They are one of the NYC locations for the State Board Exams, and they also teach ITEC courses. I am very happy with my choice so far. |

I was originally thinking of attending a school in the city but I would prefer to skip the commute and attend a school on Long Island. Is there any reason that you chose to attend a school in NYC rather than a Long Island school (since you don't live all that far from Long Island). I was thinking about the Long Island Nail and Skin Care Institute or the New York Institute of Beauty in Syosset, Long Island. Have you, or anyone else heard of these schools? |

I love being in NYC and commuting by train. I hate to drive to Long Island. Plus the only schools I heard anyone talking about were those in the city. |

I attended Aveda Institute in NYC full time for four months and graduated in November 2010. With my retail cosmetics experience and manager past work, I was hired to run a spa in midtown full time. In addition to my salary I also made extra commissions and gratuities ion esthetic services. 2011 was my most lucrative year EVER. I highly recommend Aveda over other schools because of the retail and waxing training. Other schools DO NOT give you much training in this area and as a manager I have interviewed many estheticians from Valmy and Atelier who just could not wax, esp brazilian waxing which is a demand in NYC. In a year I plan on returning to Aveda to teach. Good luck in your search and career! :) |
