I just got my date to take the California State Board Exam and the instructions say that you must wear a uniform, but they don't specify what the uniform is? Does anyone have any idea what is considered an exceptable uniform? |

You should wear your 'whites' that you wore during your program, e.g. scrub top, white pants. |

Not that I am aware of! I took the advise of the last poster and wore black pants and a grey top. The kit company rented me a lab coat and I passed without a problem. |

ok, i just took my boards on july 1, and there were several ppl there w/ white uniforms, so if u wear white u wont feel embarrassed, but the majority of ppl were wearing black pants and black shoes. and w/ your labcoat on the top doesnt really matter. |

I would try posting an ad on craigslist. Keep in mind you can use a man or a woman. There were lots of husbands used as models during my test. If you do use a man, keep in mind that he must be clean shaven. |

thank you !! May I ask where is Fountain Valley near ? I briefly lived in sAN Diego 2 yrs ago...but looking at maybe Orange county next time ? |
|
Monica in Fountain Valley, California 57 months ago |
Fountain Valley is in central orange county next to Huntington Beach...I'm not sure if that helps you at all? Also if you have any questions about the exam let me know. I just took it in February, so it is still pretty fresh. |

The practical is really easy. I was done about 30 minutes early after dropping everything on the floor and having to wash my hands countless times...I was 9 months pregnant at the time so I wasn't at my most limber or very quick. Just practice with the lashes on a friend. The more you practice the easier it is. Also, I found it helpful to use my fingers to apply the strip lash. You have to pull it off the pallet with the tweezers, but once you have the strip off of the pallet you can use your hands. Also if you apply a little extra eyeliner during the makeup portion you can get away with a little more space between your lashes and the fake ones. Also if you let your glue dry a little so it is tacky the lashes stick better. Feel free to e-mail me at monicadipiet at gmail dot com if you have any more questions.

I am moving to CA in a few months and I am licensed in the state of TX. I know that I will have to take both the written and practical. My question is this... what is on the state board? I was wondering if there was a web site or state booklet that lists what needs to be done on the board. I know that here we can go online and print out what needs to be done in what order and how you are graded. I haven't been able to find anything like that for CA. Also how far are they out for scheduling the written and practical? If anyone has any info that could help please let me know. Also if anyone needs any help with the TX board let me know I will help the best that I can. You can email me at needlessjunk at yahoo.com |

minicooper, when is your exam date?? dont stess, take it easy and relax, you'll be fine, worring only makes it worse. Just be calm and it you have to , wash your hands 100 times if you need to, sanitation , sanitation, sanitation!! its worth alot of points so you dont want to get marked down if you dont wash up, every time you touch something, and if your not sure wash anyways. |

I am scheduled to take exam at the end of October! Moved here from out of state, and we did not have to do lashes or make-up in State Boards! I am so nervous, and have no clue where to begin. Can anyone suggest a good crash course or video that could help me with the practical and written tests? |
|
Monica in Garden Grove, California 56 months ago |
Western State Kit Company has a free workshop for all students that rent the kit from them. They are located in Glendale right next to the testing center and in Whittier. They go through the entire exam with you. I think they do it every Wednesday and Saturday, but you should call them to confirm. They will show you how to do the make up and lashes. Then just grab a friend or family member and practice over and over until you are comfortable. For the written test go to stateboardhelp.com |

I just moved here from TN and I am going through the same process!!! It is so funny to find out how different the State Board exams are in each state. I am scheduled to take it at the end of October, and I will be glad to help you in any way after I go through it! Some sweet person on this forum sight directed me to this place in Glendale to rent the kit, and take a private lesson/crash course on what the CA state board exam will be. They don't really have a website, but are you moving to the LA area??? It is called Western State Kit

I'm really worried about the practical part because I know that there are differences in the TX and CA tests. In TX we use hand sanitizer instead of washing our hands. Also we don't have to do a facial scrub. I guess what I really want to know is what is considered a "basic" facial for CA board. Also does anyone know how far out they are for testing? Thanks |

Also does anyone know how far out they are for testing? Thanks I am from Texas also and took my TX exam over 15 years ago and I have to retest for CA in Nov. I know how you feel about not knowing what might be on the practical. I got a dvd from stateboardhelp.com as well as the exam questions. I know a couple of hairstylists in CA and they filled me in too. The dvd is great and the questions are 85% of whats on the written test. I figure if you ace the practice questions you will score at least 85 on the test right? My friends confirmed that WASH WASH WASH YOUR HANDS is necessary. You also only do a certian amount of the procedures at random, depending on your test booklet. So hopefully we can luck out and not get the procedures we didn't have to do in TX. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Either way, get the dvd and questions and you'll be fine. Also, the Ca costetology board has on their website the requirements ofr practical, I printed it out and it's helpful in studying what they expect in each procedure. GOOD LUCK!!!!!! |

As for the facial, I'm testing for Cosmetology and we are required to know the facial with red light and the facial with a scrub. Also, the 5 different types of facial massage, thankfully it's all in the video. |

If anyone is interested in what's on the written part of the cosmetology exam I have the practice test that I bought from stateboardhelp.com (it's 85% of what's on the test) I'll email it to whoever needs it for free. I also have the DVD's for the cosmo exam. I paid around $80.00 for them and won't need them after Nov 14 if anyone wants to buy them, I'll sell under $80.00. They are good videos and they have helped me alot. |

I haven't taken the test yet but I can say I feel more prepared after watching the DVD's and WAY LESS freaked out about what I have to do for the practical! The kit company gives a demo Mon, Wed, and Sat- when you pay for your kit the demo is free. I plan to do that this weekend. I'll let you know if it is benifical. I'm selling my dvd's as I won't need them in a few weeks.... |

Hello! I'm graduating this Wednesday and my board date is Nov. 13th. I'm going to bring my boyfriend as my model for the practical. I've heard that women often bring significant others with them. I'm worried that I will stick out to the proctor. How do people feel about bringing a male as your model?
|

Melibelle in San Diego, California 55 months ago |
Does anyone know if you have to do a pedicure for the Cosmetology Practical exam? What about the soft perm? Also, do you only have to do a plain facial or the facial w/scrub and the dermal light facials too? |
