I am an esthetician from Europe with more than 22 years of experience. Some month ago we moved to US, Minneapolis, and now it is impossible for me to find a decent place to work. I cannot open my own salon, I need 2500 hour of American practice. I don't want to work in places that gives me no chance in building clientele, and I cannot rent a space, because the law doesn't allow me. As I see, the people from this city don't spend money on luxury services like facials. Can anybody give me an advice? A I in the wrong city? Shall I consider relocating, which could be difficult leaving my husband here, or changing my profession...but I'm 52.....Opinions? |

Ana, I think you would find much better luck in an area like New York City or San Francisco. I recommend looking for job listings from those cities, and send your resume to the employers. If they show interest in hiring you, it might be a good idea to relocate. But do not relocate until you know you'll have better luck in a new city! |

Ana in Minneapolis, Minnesota said: Do you work as an Esthetician now? Hi, Ana! What a coincidence I am an esthetician from Europe too and I am 52. I have almost 30 years of experience. I moved to US 11 years ago. After I got my license I started to look for a job, The problem was we lived in a small town in Texas, where my husband worked for a very good oil company so I didn't have many choices. We live between two big cities but it is more than hour driving. We decided to open my own business in town where we lived.Since then I rent the room in the salon and for 10 years I have built a good clientele. I am very happy to work for myself but without my husband's financial support my dream would never come true. It took me a few years to establish my business. For all these years I took lots of classes so I could offer more services. Actually the economy in Texas is not as bad as in other states so I can't complain so far. But still people here don't appreciate facial as they do in Europe. It took me long time to educate them. Ana, do you have already your license? If you have more questions or need some help please email me: merted@yahoo.com. I can give you my phone and we can even talk. Good luck to you! |

I work in MN and it is true that we aren't a conspicuous consumption kind of people, we do care about skin care! Try Craigslist for esti jobs. Most postings are for jobs in the west and southern suburbs. Spalon Montage only lists openings on their website. Juut hasn't had a class of estheticians in the past year so maybe they will soon. |
