Well, I would like to start as a esthiticain and then get additional training to do things like what dermatologists do. Things like microdermabrasion, peels, botox, using lasers, etc. I would love to have my own place one day. |

I urge you to pursue a nursing degree first or if not, at least train at a reputable school for Medical Esthetics. But first of all if you wish to be an esthetician you must spell it correctly. It is esthetician and in British countries, aesthetician. Most states require an esthetics degree or cosmetology degree depending on the state. In some states we are licensed by boards of health, some by boards of Occupational Therapy and some states, Florida for example, by the Boards Business and Professional Regulations Board of Cosmetology, (see myFloridalicense.com). On an island such as Virgin Islands you should contact the board of health, as they most likely are responsible for beauty therapist, for their requirements before you start. As someone who has achieved the highest level of expertise in the field of esthetics I must caution you about esthetics in general. I have over the years watched the field become over saturated with legions of under educated estheticians. I urge you not to take that path. In addition I have observed, with some dissapointment, that nurses are allowed to perform many services that even a CIDESCO DIPLOMA cannot, in most states, perform. With a nursing degree you can perform laser treatments and botox injections if that is the route you wish to take. I am a Rejuvenation Specialist and have no interest in those treatments but if that is what you wish to do you must obtain credentials that physicians will desire. I hope this helps some. |

Hi my name is Lindsey. My situation is similar to many of the ones I have been reading on here. I am currently a freshman in college but in the long run I aspire to be a Medical Esthetician like my older sister and for many other reasons. I know a lot about it from personal experience and I know that it does not require a four year degree. However I wanted to come to college and get a higher education. My question is what degrees could benefit me in the a skin care/health related career? Currently my major is health communication with a minor in psych. Would a minor in biology help? Once I get my degree I want to start in a good Esthetics program asap. I have been looking into Aveda but I do not know of much out there. Basically I am wondering if my degree will benefit me in the long run. I would have a degree AND be a an esthetician. I am not even sure how to become medical exactly. Any advice would help. Thank you! |

Explain to them what it is that you want to do and ask them what you will need. Also talk to the board of health relating to using lasers and injectables. Some states will allow nurses RN's Yet some may only allow physicians or physician's assistants. Sice each State is different, make sure that you check it out with the VI authorities or you may end up very disappointed. Jeff |
