If you need your basic esthetician certification first, Ogle schools are awesome (locations in Fort Worth, Dallas, Arlington, and Hurst) and as for the actual medical esthetic program the only one I know of is Dallas Center for Advanced Medical Aesthetics (dallasmedicalaesthetics.com) Hope this helps! |

Albert Canalizo in Arlington, Texas said: No, as a licensed cosmetologist you cand practice esthetics, however I suggest you take post graduate classes like a place i.e. International Dermal Instiutiue so you have the necessary back ground. An esthetician usually has a min of 750 hours before licensing. Years ago the 150-200 orso hours a cosmetologist was given was okay but the last few years esthetics has and will continue to change so very much that one should strive to get at least 1200 hours by taking advanced esthetic classes. It is coming ever closer to medical. To my knowledge, Dr Fam's Dallas Advanced Medical Aesthetic program- 8 full days the the only state licensed medical aesthetic provider taught by a physican. He is excellent but I would suggest you take IDI's 5 day advanced basic class and a few other before so you have a good foundation . This is interesting. What makes have the impression that this is a state licensed medical aesthetic provider? I can't find it. Is it licensed through the TDLR or the Medical Board? Jeff |

I am also looking into schools in the DFW area. Any suggestions other than Ogle? I contacted them and they claimed that Shelton Ogle still owns them but a stylist at Ridgmar Toni and Guy this weekend told me that they sold out to a corporation and that the atmosphere there has really changed. Any comments? Mimms? |

But no Shelton Ogle doesn't own the schools or salons anymore (his sons tookover the salons but I'm not sure about the school). I love Ogle and after 6 weeks there you'll feel ready to be in an actual spa. They teach you so much, you'll always have a teacher around for help, and you get to work on real clients after only 4 weeks so you get lots of experience before graduating. It's a great school, I'd recommend it. |

Thanks Jeff. I actually think that I may go to the school just so I am promised good instructions and the knowledge to go find a job when I'm done and just not hope that someone out there will take me by the hand and teach me the right things to do. Im not sure if that seems right to you but I feel that it would be a good move. I really appreciate your advice though, you seem to really know alot. I did have another question for you if you could help me out.. I really want to get into the more medical branch of esthetics and I would like someones professional input on that and what you think is required. I keep reading that you need practice in lasers and i dont think that most schools cover that, but i see that there are courses on it. |

Actually the more scientific/medical branch of esthetics is "clinical esthetics" Lasers are not a part of Medical Esthetics. It is an additional certification and has nothing to do with esthetics. Someone practicing medical esthetics in a doctors office could also be doing lasers and even injections but only because they also posess additional certifications or licenses (e.g PA, RN, etc) which allows them to legally perform these procedures. I know that much of this is confusing and understand because there are different laws and regulations in each state. One state may not require any certifications to perform laser procedures. Others may require certifications or even licenses. In that most states require licensed esthetic schools to only teach or offer what is withing the scope of practice within the license, you will not see subjects like lasers and the like being taught or offered in a state licensed school. This might help:

Albert in Mandeville, Louisiana said: go to TDLR provider(Texas Cos Board) site: There seems to be some misconception. I am familiar with them being on the list for approved CUE classes as a provider. However, being a CEU provider does not mean that you are a licensed education establishment in Texas. If that were the case, the TEXAS BEAUTY SHOW (Provider # : 1395) would also be licensed. It only means that certain credits can be applied to the states required CEU subjects which is needed to renew your license. There is a big difference. Your post shows all subject matters which are approved. However, none relate to "Medical Aesthetics". If you will notice the subject of "Medical Aesthetics" is not on the list of approved subjects. This does not mean that they can not offer such a class. It just means that the class is not approved as a curriculum. It also does not mean that such an establishment does not provide quality education. The position of TDLR has been made clear a number of times to me. They consider Medical Aesthetics beyond the scope of their agency and the practice of esthetics. Therefore, how could they approve any program that relates to it? This is why I was curious as to how you got the idea that the course was either licensed or approved. But let me repeat: This does not mean that the education provided is good or lacking. |

What do you want from my life? I went to his 9 day class and got a lot from it and the money was well spent. As I understand it a medical esthetician works with a physician that is why I assume they are called medical estheticians. He trains one on the basics on being a medical aesthetician provider as well as ways an advanced esthetician can become more effective in the scope of their practice. How to really give clients real treatments, not just feel good. How to cut through all the hype and marketing out there. Each state has very different laws and the way we are able to practice within our license. That is what we learn the first 5 minutes. His classes are limited to 7 or 8 people and each of us was there for different reasons. Who said anything about a "school"? It's a 9 day program in his office where he practices his medical field. Besides us estheticians or facialist, physicians and RN's also attend the program to learn medical aesthetics along side of us; however they stay an extra 3 days to learn things that only they are licensed do. We non-medical licensed estheticians are not allowed to attend those extra days where he teaches how to give Botox, Restylane, Mesotherapy, Photo-Laser, etc. He gives us an overview of these things as well as taught us how to really consult with a client, the psychology of different clients, the real anatomy and physiology of the skin, how it really works and absorbs, chemistry, skin conditions we can treat and how to spot such conditions or disorders that need to be referred to a physician, how to really treat pigmentation disorders, aging, acne and Rosacea (the field of medicine he practices), micro-derm the correct way and when not to micro-derm and a dozen other areas as well…taught from a physician’s point of view. Not by a RN or esthetician…a real physician. You have hands on with real patients of his with him at your side- about a real as it can get. |

And I am happy I am one of Dr Fam’s students. Whenever I see a problem or condition I am not sure about, I send him an Email with digital pictures of the skin condition and he gets back to me as well as any of his former students. We are also given an emergency phone number to call if we really have an emergency that really can’t wait – we try never to use it but he is there for us. Now you tell me where else can you find such a “dealâ€. He instills a sense of precision in us from day one – we are professionals and we are not allowed to guess – we must know or get the correct answers … he is very tough in this area. Even in the way we answer the questions on his final exam – no guessing or he gets very firm with us and makes us think. That being said, I feel before one goes to such a place one should first go to a place like the International Dermal Inst for 100 hours and get their post graduate degree for about $17 per hour and get a solid, no nonsense, no product orientated post grad education and maybe continue and earn their Honors Diploma after 300 hours. I am sure there are others but I can’t see any being better. Also attend other CE’s, programs, etc and subscribe to things like Dermascope, Les Nouvellas Esthetiques, become NCEA and CIDESCO certified, join professional organizations, etc. |

A cosmotologist can perform skincare treatments as well as an esthetician but most likely would have to be trained as well, some doctor's offices would like a following. Our classes in Cleveland. I would recommend becomming an esthetician then a certified medical assistant or offering to work as a medical assistant as well. Again, someone can be trained without going to MA school to be a medical assitant in the office. Our school scientific skincare offers exciting CE and CME classes at a fraction of the cost. We have a great class comming up that features Juvederm, Botox information and demos plus classes on camoflage, pre and post procedure info as well as info on advanced peels and other exfoliaion procedures. There is inexpensive but nice accommodations available. Please contact Raizel at 440.289.8247 or check out our website for more information www.Scientificskincareinstitute.com This almost 8 hour class is just $65.00 and you will get a great deal of information. The class has been designed by a board certified plastic surgeon, licensed cosmetology instructor and a MA in education. |

The Board of Medicine has stated that lasers, laser for hair removal, Botox injections, collagen injections, and any other noninvase injections of materials used as procedures to treat patients must be performed by a Physician, a Physician Assistant under supervision, or an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner working under a protocol signed by a Physician.

Hi I have been looking for a good advanced and medical esthetics school for the past 6 months and still I cannot make up my mind. either a school offers just esthetics or just medical esthetics. If they offer both then one of them are not as advanced. It is so confusing picking a school when all of them are telling u they're curriculum is above industry standards. And what is the difference between certificate and diploma? can u still perform services on a certificate? and if I have a medical esthetic certificate will that be enough for a medical place to hire me? Do you really need a cidesco diploma to work around the world? And as to teachers, how do I know it is a good and experienced teacher? please I would really appreciate if someone got back to me on this. I am so confused as to what school I should choose. I live in Mississauga, close to toronto and am looking for something within that area. I was wondering if anyone heard of these school, and please if you have tell me what you heard on them and what you think about them. Gina's college of advanced essthetics ( they offer cidesco certification), Edith Serei Institute, Elmcrest College, Bodypro, Chellsey Institute, Brittain Institute, beauty exchange. I just don't know how to make up my mind. YOur help will be greatly appreciated! thanx Gina. |

I am not sure where you got your information, however, I verified with your state (michigan) board of cosmetology and a Cosmetologist license qualifies a cosmetologist to perform all procedures (including estys)and is therefore eligable for all advanced training offered to those who only have a esty license. Although there are no schools that I know of, there are courses. There is even a course on DVD for about $800. What is confusing to many is the fact that the term "Medical Esthetics" is very vague and confusing as to what is actually within its scope of practice (e.g. injections and lasers. Many believe that that is a part...which it is not.) One of the reasons why this is confusing as Medical Esthetics is actually a crossover field. Although esty's are crossing over into medical there are also medical practitioners who are crossing over into esthetics and some MP's can perform things like injections. Hope this helps Jeff |
