Hi! I am still in the process of narrowing down esthetician schools to see which one I would like to attend (if you know of any good ones in the Middle Tennessee area, please let me know!) I am struggling with the decision to go to esthetician school or not. I love skin care, I love people, and I love making people feel better about themselves, but I want to go past the basic esthetician courses and further myself with education in laser treatments, chemical peels, laser hair removal, and etc. I have no idea how to go about doing this!! I cannot find anywhere in Tennessee that offers such courses. I would love to work for a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. I am just apprehensive because I don't know how to go about furthering my education and am afraid after I do figure out how to further my education that it will not pay off money wise. I'm sorry if this question is all over the place, but I feel like I am stuck in neutral as I have been told that the field is flooded and that I will "be lucky if I make $30,000/yr." I would appreciate any advice anyone has!!! Thank you!

Hi Springbride,

I am not sure of the market in Tennessee but there are several of us in NY. The only way to set yourself apart is to get the basic and advanced training. Personally, I'm interested in advancing myself, which will make me more valuable. Also, you can train to be a make-up artist too. This way you can work for someone but also yourself by targeting brides etc. This is a good field; you just need to stay on top of your education. Do you have other fields you're interested in?

Best.

I absolutely want to advance myself, but am unsure of how to go about that in my state. Thank you so much for your suggestion! I will take any advice I can get! I want to make the best that I can out of this profession, but looking at many posts on here can be discouraging as many people are not making much money. I want to make as much money as possible, so if anybody has any advice on how to increase income it would be MUCH appreciated! I am not in school yet, but want to cover all bases before hand so I know what I am getting into!

Also, I have a question regarding schools. I am looking at several in my area and am unsure on which to pick. I am looking at Tennessee Technology Center @ Nashville; their esthetics program costs $1,900. I am also looking at the Salon Professional Academy and their program costs $7,500. What could possibly be so different about these 2 institutions for SPA to cost so much more? The ONLY difference I see (from the websites) is that SPA offers job placement. If there are any estheticians in the Nashville, TN area please let me know your experience with your school (where & how was it?) and how was it searching for a job? How much are you currently making or what did you start off at? Thanks in advance!

Springbride - I don't know which is the better school, but Salon Professional Academy is a private school so it costs more. TTC is a public/state funded school (your tax dollars at work!) so costs students less.

Check around to get opinions, and then attend the school that will provide the education that best suits your needs. (You can buy a lot of post graduate education for the difference in price!!)

Hope this helps

Thank you for your response! Yes, there is a huge difference in price, but TTC's waiting list is a year+ :( . I am still looking around as the wait for Salon Professional seems to be hefty as well by only a few slots for October left. Yikes! I hope this doesn't mean the field is way flooded around here.

Hi,
I live in Orlando and just started a skin specialist tech school for $1,100 it is a great program and the teacher is great, She has over 25 years experience. I checked out Aveda institute and other popular schools but they were around 21,000. Way out of my price range. Check out the tech school because my teacher is going to teach us advanced courses. You are as good as you beleive you are. You need to get out there and promote yourself if you love what you are going to do. I have been a massage therapist for 14 years and never asvirtised because I love what I do and people can tell. They want to come to a skin care specialist with a passion for what they do. Good luck and reach for your goal. Don't think twice, just do it.

Thank you for your response!! You are so right...I am WAY over analyzing things (I always do). The tech school where I am located is $1,900 and the private school I mentioned (SPA) is $7,500. HUGE difference! There's also the difference to where the tech school's waiting list is already over a year! AH! Once again, over-analyzing, so that makes me worried that the field is extremely flooded around here. I went and got a facial today and talked to the esthetician there. She said they have 3 estheticians and don't have enough clients coming in for 1 esthetician & that it took her 6 months to find a job. She said this economy is terrible on business right now. I just worry that taking my time to go to school may end up being a waste with not making the money I had hoped (have you noticed I'm a worrier??? HA!!) You're so right....I need to just do it, but I always talk myself out of things! Really wish I could stop that. Oh and the tech school offers night classes starting in Sept. but it is a 15 month course whereas day classes are 9 months. Do you think I should keep looking for a shorter course even though it will be more expensive?? Thanks again!

I too am going to be going to Esthetics School in June. I live in Seattle, Wa and had a few schools to choose from. I emailed lots of local spas about which school I should go to and the response I got was "They're all mostly the same." So I decided that I wanted my own criteria. I wanted a school that had Federal Financial aid as well as more advanced training. You may qualify for grants and loans with good interest rates. Fill out your FAFSA and find out. Look around and see if the school offers scholarships. Sometimes graduates who were successful want to help future students.

There are other things you can do to expand your desirability. You can learn how to do lash extensions, sugaring and other things such a medical program. A medical program with take longer and cost more, but sometimes you don't need it if you are willing to work your way up. Some spas are willing to take people with basic training and mold them into what they want .

Schools are going to be flooded when the economy takes a dump. When people lose their jobs they use this time to learn a new trade. Not everyone will succeed. You may also want to consider going out of state if that is an option.

I currently work the front desk at spa here in Seattle and while things were slow, they have picked up. The good thing about esthetics is that they have many different services they offer. People who can afford their facials will continue to come and people who love getting their brows waxed won't give that up. It only costs $20 tops. They have a variety where massage therapist and nail techs don't.

You also have to make sure you work for a spa that is also working for you. By that I mean they have to be willing to put out ads and come up with different specials when times get tough. I know I would be willing to give someone a free brow wax if it meant they would come in for a facial.

They cut me off, so I have to post twice.

I would advise you to go to the Tech School. Why pay more for the same thing you would get at a tech school. If you're only going to be making $30000 a year a loan for $2000 is nothing. It would be worth it.

Have you talked to any Estheticians and Spa Owners and gotten there opinion. Talk to spas ( I advise going in or emailing, if you call they Front Desk will think you're soliciting when you ask for the manager or owner. Sometimes the Front Desk may even have advise for you) and see what people have to say.

I know a year wait seems like a long time, but it can give you a chance to save money for school, and maybe work in the spa environment so you know what to expect (if you haven't worked in the field already).

I'm not sure what the licensing requirements are in Ten. but in Seattle if you have a cosmetology license, you can practice Esthetics. I wouldn't advise that route, but it's something to consider if you like hair and nails as well. It would open ALOT more doors if you were interested in some of those things.

Hope this helps. I know it's a stressful choice.

Hi Juliet!

So maybe Im a little out of the field here with this one, but have you looked into the company Nu Skin? Just so you know that I am not trying to recruit you, I wont even put my contact info. But you said you loved skin care and helping others feel good about themselves. I have struggled with severe acne for 6 years (every since be pregnant with my first son) I had tried everything. Dermotologist visits, chemical peels, micro dermabrassion, laser treatments...Thermascan laser and Micro Erbium Laser. Nothing helped...nothing! I was then introduced to the Galvanic Spa, (the device we market to esthaticians, spa owners, salons and individuals) My skin is clear and looks amazing! So with those results, I decided it was well worth the venture into this business. If I could help others who felt the way I did, I wanted to do it. But oddly enough, its not really marketed as an acne treatment...its a "wrinkle Iron". So the customers call it! Anyways, the science is remarkable and solid. The company has been around for a long time and are global. I am working with a dermatologist and she has read all the clinical and technical stuff behind the Galvanic Spa and products and she has now introduced this into her practice. There is a lot of money to be made through this company with hard work and passion. You basically get paid to go to school for skin care. While you learn the business your also making money and building your business.

Just look into it and see what you think. It cant hurt to look.
www.nsoverview.com and www.nsevideos.com
those are not my websites just websites you can get some more information on the opportunity and products.

Good luck in your venture, I wish you the best!
Jodi

Just like you I am starting back to school for esthetics. I have chosen Georgia Career Institute in McMinnville there is also one in Murfreesboro. I went in Wednesday of last week and Thursday They had all my financial aid forms and student loans ready for me to start this coming tuesday. It is a great school and in the next two months wil be a nationally accredited school, the first in the state which will make job placement alot easier. The program runs close to 10,000 but the student loans dont have to be paid back until 6 months after you graduate and all you have to pay is 50 dolars a month. You can also go back and take a course after you graduate in permanent makeup which will also open up alot of opportunities for you down the road. esthetics is the number eight fastest growing career right now so I dont think you have anything to worry about. And if you change your mind about the community college and want to go right away check out GCI By the way the McMinnville branch is about a thousand cheaper than Murfreesboro and runs 8,950 with EVERYTHING included. you wont have to buy anything yourself like with the community college. Good Luck!

I live in Wisconsin.. and I too am thinking about doing this.. however.. unlike you.. I am not at all interested in Medical Esthetics. If ...you are and you have a Medical Esthetic Program.. which differs then the traditional.. you'd be best off then..going straight for that type of training instead. It all depends on the persons interest. Your best off working for yourself.. as soon as you can .. so that you can obtain 100% not 30 0r 40%.. which is nothing. However.. If you can find and go to a Medical Esthetic Program .. you can have the advantage that other Estheticians don't without that training...and you can work for a doctor and get an hourly or salary.. which is what it sounds like you want.

Hi Sweetie Pie.. I live in WI.. I don't see any post from WI. Not sure if that is good or bad..lol. I am in the same boat.Except..our community college... only offers a full cosmetology program..not a skin care one for cheaper then a formal Esthetician Course that cost the 10 grand.. also. I can't get any straight answers here. I did call one business owner of a big spa who told me her Estheticians took several years to develope steady.. clients. However.. I hear.. if you work at a Resort Spa.. the people you see are never repeats.. but.. whomever comes in. I am nervous also about re payment because on another page here.. some woman in CA.. said she has been out of school for awhile can't find work and getting worried.. can't re pay the loan. She regrets it.

Has anyone thought of Massage School or.. the full Cosmetology Program? I am curious.. I have been told they are better choices. I called a huge resort spa where I am.. and was told by the manager.. she is looks for someone who has the Cosmetology Program and License in addition to the Esthetician License and that is the selling point when she hires someone. That means the more schooling you get in additonal services .. the more hireable above others you are. Just wanted to share.

Sweetiepie: Thank you for your response! I went and had a facial a couple of weeks ago and she said she went to GCI in Murfreesboro. That's really cool that they offer a course in permanent makeup. Are there any other additional courses they offer? It truly sounds like a great school, was it tough to get financial aid (I would definitely need it) or is every student offered it? Great info!

Kimbers: Good luck in your career! I hope you reach the level of success you have set your mind to!! :) I hope you have a great day/month/year/life! :)

Leah: Thanks for your response! Unfortunately, I can't find any school that offers a medical esthetics program in my area...I wish!! Thank you for your advice. I do hope to obtain a job working for either a plastic surgeon or dermatologist, although I hear it is extremely hard to get into those jobs. :( Good luck in all that you do! Also, I have read where lots of estheticians regret going into to the career field and spending the money for school, which worries me. I have heard most leave the field within 2 years and the ratio is 80/20. 80 being the people that leave the career. I wish I could hear more positive things about this career choice because it does get discouraging seeing mainly bad things and hearing that I won't make any money. I told my friend I wanted to do this and she said, "you better marry someone rich." BOO-HOO! lol.

Right now the courses GCI offers are esthetics massage therapy nail tech and cosmetology. Financial aid is SO EASY. I went in to tour the school last Wednesday, had my financial aid Thursday and started school on the following Tuesday. Pell grants covered half my tuition and student loans the other half which are offered and available to everyone. You only have to pay back 50 dollars a month and not until six months after graduating. It is a great school with great instructors and really nice people. I was nervous at first, but after only three days it already feels like my home away from home. It takes 8 months to finish the course and the Mcminnville hours are 9 am to 3 30 pm. Not sure about Murfreesboro. Good luck

Wow, that is great hours and you got in right away? Wow, everywhere I have called has some sort of waiting list. The day hours at TTC @ Nashville is like 7:30-2:15...WAY too early for me, especially considering I would have to drive 45 minutes to get there everyday. Also, that waiting list is over a year. The night courses that I have signed up for are from 3:30-9:00 and takes 12 months and I am not able to start until September. I wonder why your school could get you right in? That's great though! So you are liking it so far? Good luck to you as well! :)

Feel Free to email on yahoo...starrfillednights2007@yahoo.com. I am seeking the truth.. I hear 50/50 good and bad. I don't want to take on $10,000.00 for school when .. I may or may not find work. This one lady from CA.. said she couldn't ..now is in debt.. I would think.. luxury items.. minus lipstick..eye liner and mascara.. would be the first to go... I am looking for some advise and support from someone just out of school whom has or hasn't found work. I am open. I am seriously.. considering Culinary instead.. because they say food and medical are recession proof. I called a Spa Owner in WI.. and she said it took her Esthetician two years to start buidling her client book on a steady secured basis. I don't have 2 years to pay rent and bills.. and can't live on comission .. if things are dead.. or super slow.. I am sure... they would not think twice of cuttine hours or letting people go home early or go period. Please Email Me.. Thank You

Leah, I am in the same boat as you, I have heard success stories, but I have also heard stories that are...not so successful. I've heard more bad than good that's for sure! I am also worried about paying for this schooling, going to school for a year, and then not being able to find work. It REALLY worries me. I talked to a girl I know that has been an esthetician for several years now. When she got out of school she was lucky enough (yes, I do believe it is luck right out of school) to find a job at a high-end salon/spa in a great part of town. She did not have to build up her own clientele as the reputation of the spa was already so good. She made $45,000 her first year out and got a brand new mustang, moved out, totally independent(she was 18 or 19). She tells me now that new estheticians entering the field are LUCKY if they make $30,000/yr. She said the economy has really hurt their business, but not necessarily hers because the part of town she is in...the women are not going to give up their pampering. Leah, let me know what you hear. I think commission would be terrible to be on straight out of school because if no one is in your chair, you're not getting paid and when you're new and are not lucky enough to get hired into an already steady clientele salon.....you're screwed.

Call/Go to a Univeristy or.. State College and see if they offer a Theatrical Make Up class. My Univeristy offers it cheaper if you come into the credit cours for this .. wanting no credit.. you don't have to take exams.. your just there to learn the skill.. Free lance yourself/contract out to Opera Houses.. Ballet.. Theatres where they need this. If you can take a Massage class at night. Yoga.. something else to add.. People love wellness that is the next big area.. Hollistic Areas of healing the body. There are many on line classes. Go on line to Color Me Beautiful.. they offer a lot of free info. Put your flyers and business cards up at all the grocery stores you can think of in their glass cases.. because moms want spa parties.. and know brides. Advertise for Prom and Special Occassion Make Up. Go to High End Strip Clubs.. Hooters.. there are many.. Modeling Agencies.. And Yes.. Escort Services.. these are all high end clients who make thousands a day and these women depend on their looks and will drop the money. Go to Up Scale Business Park areas and drop off your cards.. Get someone to create a web site.. and advertise in phone books. Business Directories.. Extreme Lash.. is the best Permanent Eye Lash Extensions around they cost 300.00 to install and abouts. 75-90.00 a month to upkeep.. the clients I mention depend on these.. Brides.. Brides Maids..All will pay for this.. Proms. You can have steady busines from this. There are about six total classes towards becoming an Advanced Sylist and they are not ... cheap.. but this is a Huge money maker.. Theatre People and Opera Houses.. Ballet.. will use this service their jobs depend on this glam. Its also steady income while your doing their makeup.. add up how much this service cost.. you can make 5 grand or close to it.. doing all I mentioned. The more places you go.. the more hooters.. agencies etc.. this increases your chances.. then you can get a massage therapist or another esthetician to go half and rent a room or space somewhere until your ready to go on your own or work from home. You can add cosmetology program or nails going at night.. also. Pet massage to people..My dogs love it! You can move towards Wellness from beauty which is where things are ultimately headed anyways with the health care mess.. Essential Oils you can sell and use...even as perfume.. Make Up gift Baskets.. and oils. You can do color and light therapy.. and aroma therapy on line courses short term very. You can sell eyemasks herb

You can eventually sell herbal teas.. in your spa baskets.. which is nice with a mug and slippers... mabe a spa robe. You can check out becoming a tong ren therapist.. which also works on animals and has been proven but the AMA doesnt't want to .. for curing cancer.. its on You Tube.. and there aren't many trained yet ..in this healing method. You can work part time at a Cosmetic Counter in a Department Store.. where they love.. love.. to hire Estheticians and you meet brides.. keep your business cards in your pocket.. and don't schedule yourself the weekend.. they need you to work becaus you will make triple for one day. You can go to all the stores and get a copy of all the Bridal Registries.. however you can. You will get a lot of referrals. If you take some Wilton Cake Decorating Classes at night.. you can also mention and advertise you make wedding cakes or sheet cakes .. they can be simply stated.. ellegant.. but not over the top. Classic.. Or. for bridal showers .. baby showers..Anniverseries even.. Cross Sell Your extra skills. If none of this helps you or works.. and I would be shocked if it did not.. you need to find and take a Medical Esthetician Course somewhere. You can also leave business cards at Dermatologist Office.. Plastic Surgeons.. but.. you need to offer them a service or two... in exchange for.. or..advertise them on your web page.. ask them for refferals after you serviced them.. and always.. get testimonies from your customers and take camera picks .. creating a portfolio..incase brides want to see it. HOPE I HELPED YOU ALL>> HUGS>> AND BEST OF LUCK >> EMAIL ME AND LET ME KNOW>> WHAT HAPPENS

Ohh... you can also.. Do Consulting.. like the info.. marketing strategies..etc.. to help newbies. and even train others to do the same.. consult.

Trade Shows... and Many Bridal Shows..Go outside of your areas to cities.. where there are a lot of people.. Real Estate Agnecies.. Stock Brokers.. Banks..Accountants.. all make good money and would buy service.. You can even go into buisness's and see if you can give free.. facials once you can obtain a product line.. and from that you get business.. Casinos... another place.. Resort.. Spas.. Organic Products all natural.. are what people want. You will have to eventually if you go it alone.. cater to the high end client with say sparkling water.. fruits.. cheese .. crackers.. veggies.. whatever they like.. its up to you to ask and take it down. Its a lot .. I know.. you'll be busy.. but you have to put the money out to make it. Sell your spa baskets on your website..Hollistic Facials are also nice for Cancer Patients and make them feel better.. grown or children.. Hospitals are another avenue. Oncologist Best Of Luck..

Leah, him leaving you for another woman was a blessing in disguise, truly. Imagine if you would have married him, then found out he cheated. That would have been twice as bad. You are better without the loser! Keep that chin up and smile...because you never know who could be falling in love with that smile ;) You sound like such a sweet woman and thank you for the wonderful wishes of happiness! I love dogs, my family has had dogs as long as I can remember, we currently have 5...LOL! I have my own and my fiancee has his own, so we already have 2 :). Oh yeah, and we currently have 5 precious siberian husky puppies that we have to sell soon. :(........anyways, yeah, i love dogs, LOL!! You don't sound happy to me and that makes me sad (can you tell I'm a nurturer?? lol!). By the way, my name is Heather. I am sending a BIG hug and a HUGE smile to you from good ol' Tennessee! Don't be scared, be open to anything and anyone that may come your way....you never know how it may turn out. :)

SpringBride.. I wanted to talk to you more about the Esthetician field. Are you one.. or are you considering going? Its only five months.. I was thinking of switching gears.. I was wondering if you can please help me. My goal would be to work for myself if I were to take the risk and go for the five months towards my license..I have to double check.. but.. I think in WI..we don't need a managers license for Esthetician.. just Cosmetology.. to work for ourself. Which could save me some time. I was hoping .. to find someone in school that would be interested in going half in renting out space/a room.. to work with me.. split the cost.. which isn't usually to costly..from what I been hearing. I was as said .. previously.. in the food service industry for many year.. I love.. food.. but.. decided.. I didn't want to be around it tempting me all day.. and having meals ..snacks etc.. and the work was physically challenging at times.. which gets to you after awhile.. Someone on yahoo answers was saying to go for Culinary.. but.. being around this industry... it is primarily male dominated and they do hire mostly men for some odd reason.. and the kitchen talk isn't that nice..lol all day. A lot of yelling.. from the Chef also. I thought Esthetician.. and the beauty industry has always been a money making industry.. and women with money to burn as I mentioned ways and clients.. I think with all my ideas ..that I would do okay and do well .. don't you think? The problem occurs.. where I would need to get the money up.. for a product line and some basice supplies. Which means .. I would have to start out working for someone ..and I would have to inbetween this.. do all the leg work as I posted to gather up clients and sell my services to them.. in order to have the money to rent a room or space. I could end up geting flooded.. but.. I am thinking this field will be a lot easier on my body. Then .. kitchen work and lifting. Also..I want to work for myself.

Let me know .. what you think? I know... the economy can't stay like this... and I have read on line recently.. that the Spa industry is remaining in place.. and has not been drastically impacted. That being sai....women who have money and some lots of it.. and who need these services or depend on them.. aren't ever effected by the economy.. it caters to the wealthy... not the average. Let me know.. if you think.. I should just go for it. Thanks.. HUGS

Also..LOL.... If a Spa like the Esthetician you mentioned has a steady stream of Clients already established.. that would be ideal..lol..but..its up to the person and how motivated they are in this business and how much and how far they put themselves out there. Some ..wait for people to come to them.. or.. they don't want to expand on their education. I think this all impacts the amount of clients you get and the money you make. I just think.. its the base..the foundation..to build upon other avenues.. while generating a nice or above nice income ..which is entirely up to you to go out and get. "Do you know.. if you have to bring the clients in..can you take them with you when you leave? Because that is my concern.. I dont want to go out and get one hundred clients .. do all the leg work.. get crazy busy...decided to split cost of a room with someone then be told.. NOPE.... you can't bring them with you. LOL.. that would be depressing to say the least. Let me know..thanks

I just personally...Love skin care and make up and I think this occupation is a nice one for women because it allows you to work from home eventually or rent a small place out.. or make an addition etc. After you get your clients together.. they will come to you. And.. its not heavy lifting.. I seen this Actual GOLD facial on TV and it costs 625.00 and you should have they say three..LOL.. women who have money to drop would love...this. and like I mentioned with the health care industry.. the way its headed and going..more and more people are seekind wellness centers and ways to relax.. you can add alternative treatments and healing techniques like aromatherapy and sell products ..baskets etc. Do you think all my ideas would take me far? Thanks Leah

Hello Leah, I am actually not even in school for it yet. I have signed up for the program and will start in September. My course will take 12 months. Yours will only take 5!??? LUCKY! I am 21 years old and am contemplating whether or not to go for my RN first because it is not my goal to be in a spa. I really want to work for a dermatologist or plastic surgeon, but am unsure if it is necessary or not to get your RN. So, I'm very sorry, but I won't be able to offer you any information about this subject. Is this something you really want to do? How much are your courses? It sounds to me with all the research you have done and how to market yourself you will do good, but I know that usually depends on where you get your job. You're right, this field absolutely caters to the wealthy. Sometimes you just have to take a flying leap girly...I know it's hard, but you never know how it may turn out and you may regret that later in life by not doing it wondering, "what if?" You would be starting out a lot better than some other estheticians with all of your knowledge on the subject already. It's only 5 months, but I understand that you are also supporting yourself. Don't rely on whether I say do it or not, because I would feel terrible if you did do it and it didn't work out. You have to follow your gut and like I said before, leap! I am having a difficult time taking that advice as well, but I have always been interested in this field and I think you're right that the economy can't stay like this (at least I hope not!). I think you would do really good, personally, but I am not going to say whether or not you should do it because that decision lies solely on you. Have a nice day!

OMG, I absolutely think all of your ideas would take you far. And as for taking your clients with you....absolutely! But, that's only if they want to come. When you go to a spa you do not sign a contract signing to never go anywhere else, lol, so do not worry about that. If you are good and they like you, they will follow you. Same as a hairdresser I believe. You have ideas that I would have never in a million years thought of, and quite honestly, you're just like me and are over-analyzing. I think you would do great, but, once again, will say it usually depends on the area where you get a job. Um, is there a class to learn how to do those Gold facials??? CHA-CHING! lol!

Leah:I do hope to obtain a job working for either a plastic surgeon or dermatologist, although I hear it is extremely hard to get into those jobs. I told my friend I wanted to do this and she said, "you better marry someone rich." BOO-HOO! lol.

There is always going to be someone who regrets doing a career move that isn't right for them. There are plenty of people who just graduated from college and cannot find work. They could have sunk anywhere from $10,000 to 100,000 on that degree that is getting them nowhere. One of my best friends graduated from college in December 2008 and has yet to find a good job. She is working for minimum wage at a daycare with $50,000 in debt with a loan monthly loan payment for $600. Ouch. Aesthetics isn't for everyone. If you want this bad enough you will succeed. It might be hard to find a job right away at a dermatologist office and that's ok. Working at a spa is really fun. Working at bigger might be good if you can't find anything else, but something in a neighborhood is the way to go. You have more return clients. If you can find a spa that offers microderm, microcurrent, peels and facials with equipment you are setting yourself up for a future in a dermatologist office. There aren't may downsides to working in a spa, sometimes they let you trade services with other providers!

Thank You SO...Much Spring Bride... And ...Kimbers.. Glad you like my ideas.. and Kimbers.. you are right.. if I can learn some of those high tech machines there is something in it for me. I am not sure.. a dermatologist would want me..unless I did ..lol..especially with some states offering the Medical Esthetics Courses. In WI. We dont have them here.. I would have to travle far out to find one.. and the drive would be herendous.. However..maybe.. a spa would pay or re imburse me to go and learn them..somewhere..who knows... You made a good point Kimbers.. Esthetics School is 10 grand here..but compared to a 4 yr College is a bargain.. and your right..teaching jobs after College are next to impossible to find unless you leave your state. So.. it couldn be worse..as the debt could be. Also.. I can eventually expand and offer additional services. Besides that I can have flexibility... ROFL>>>>>SpringBride...About the Gold Facial.. You Had Me >.. At Cha Ching LOL.... I Cracked Up! hugs

Kimbers... just to throw this out here.. to you to see what you think.. I was mentioning to SpringBride.. I have worked a lot in the food industry over the years.. But.. its predominately.. male.. and its physically challenging at times. I was freaking out reading some other spa blogs and got somewhat discouraged... and was considering taking a food production course.. but.. somewhere inside.. me.. and mostly because I seen behind the scenes and how the Chef yells and its usually all men for some reason.. I am middle aged ...don't look it.. but.. I didn't want to be around food and eating .. snacking all day.. being yelled at by the Chef... and hearing the male talk all day.. about who did who. LOL.. It was challenging..besides that I got hit on a lot.. and that was just wrong. I prob. answered my own q. Because.. for all these reasons wanted out. Why go back lol. I also want to work for myself. I think if your nice to people and can eventually offer services that are differen't and alternative/hollistic and keep taking courses... you will have many possibilites.. It worries me about the stats of those who stay..in the business but.. I am just wondering if they quit .. tying to find customers.. or how much they wanted to put into it or...not. I think the license rests on your shoulders... and like any business in any area.. it can only thrive.. if you feed into it and are a star player.. and some aren't willing to go the distance.. or expand in all directions or further educate to offer more services.

Would You Agree?

SpringBride,

You are lucky... to be 21. If you are considering RN.. I would at your age make certain you aren't going to have babies anytime soon. Since you are for and not at all opposed to this area and the Medical Field as I am.. I have two close friends who are RNs..in NJ. I am not sure about your state ..but in WI ..we are one of the few states left that hire and still need and respect LPNs. I would personally.. shoot for the one year..LPN that makes 17-20 or so any hour doing home care. But.. if your set on RN.. I can tell you from my two friends.. BSN is the only way today to go..because its starting to be mandated..and once you reach that level.. you have more control over your career .. you can even become a School Nurse..which is what my friend wish she did. RN>..is much more stressful and so is the schooling then LPN.. and no matter what way you decided to go.. you have to get a CNA Certificate first. which is what you need to do. You don't in my state have to go to or pass the boards..just the class and you have to take A CPR/First Aide Class. I did both..but hated it. Its just so..not me and I couldn't do that to patients and show up miserable everyday. I love...the Spa Settting. I think your best off that way at your age. IF... I did not mind nursing.. I would go straight for it.. and not look into Spa at all. I see how my friend lives.. they vacation a lot she.. has a daughter and she buys new vehicles.. and spends .. spends.. its secured icome with ..benefits .. and she only works two ten hour shifts in NJ and makes a killing.. you can work as much or part time and get full time pay.. and be home with your kids... one day.. That is my honest suggestion for you girlfriend... HUGS

Leah, please don't let your age be a factor in discouraging you from going after your dreams! I went to school with all different kinds of women, from all walks of life, and all different ages from 18 through 48. The man that strung you along and left you doesn't deserve you, and that woman he's with now should be the one who is worried, as he is NO PRIZE and will one day do the same to her. You can meanwhile move forward, and create a beautiful life for yourself, that includes a dream job, husband, children, etc. Don't give up! 40's are the new 30's and people are having children later and later, whether naturally, through adoption, etc. You are far too young, vibrant, and smart to let this awful man get the best of you and keep you down! People like that never win, even if it seems like they are for the moment...

JCM.. "Big... Hugs" Are you male or female..just curious.. I have been crying for days. Its been a long time since this happened.. and maby because.. I invested 5.5 years.. new him 6. Those years at 45.. can't get back... been going through a lot.. and big depression.. turned to food.. blamed myself at first.. then.. him. I moved here from NJ where I lived my whole life. Not ..familiar with Butler. I been keeping all this in.. told some friends on line from NJ that are too caught up in their own lives to really care.. didn't want to hear it.. or reach out. its well over a year. I am down here in Wisconsin where I have not made one friend. I have tried.. and people pretend a bit..then are too busy. NJ was way.. too expensive for me.. Have my mother help tg..because I lost my job last year. I am at the point of nothing interesting me. Have absolutely..no desire to have any dates.. for years..Every single man cheated.. and to me..its a lost cause.. thats a huge number. I mean dating ..not sleeping with. He left me high and dry and he was my best friend.. Thank You.. for your concern and compassion.. I am losing to be honest my drive..have little ambition.. my dream is to become a screenwriter.. I wish I could do that and nothing else.. But.. my mothers health is not good..and she doesnt care.. and I am worried about so.. so.. much. I am so..sorry to let loose on you like this.. I don't know you.. but.. you were nice to offer your support. I just am tired of having crummy jobs for crummy pay.. I am losing that fight sometimes.. I can't even do what I love.. write..because.. I need to find a means to support myself. I have other student loan debt out. To pay 10 grand for school and to have to run around and do all this myself with no help as in support.. no one to share.. things with is so.. so... upsetting. When he was romping in the hay with her.. I had to put my little old sick mini cocker that was my dads and been with us for 17.5 yrs. down myself. That was Horrify

Leah, I'm female, and boy can I relate to what you are going through. I've been there. That's part of why I went to school for esthetics, funnily enough. My father's passing, the end of a bad relationship, and the loss of a job all crashed down on me in a matter of 3 months, and it led me to ask myself some tough questions about my life. The main question I kept asking myself (which I hadn't much before) was - what do I want? How would I want to live my life if I could have anything I wanted? I was in the place you are now, with no desire or drive for a long time, and I think that you've been crushed, and may just need a little time to heal sweetheart. Be patient with yourself. Take a walk, read a book, watch a funny movie. Anything to bring yourself back to life little by little. You will get there eventually.

I forget the woman's name that wrote the Harry Potter books - JK Rowling maybe? I had heard that she was either on welfare or some kind of assistance and a single mother on top of that - look what she managed to do! If you want to write, go for it. Once you feel your heart healing, you will get some of those creative juices flowing again, and you can use your writing as a sort of therapy to help you in the meantime! You may have a masterpiece locked inside of you waiting to come out - and the only thing to regret at the end of life is not giving your dreams a shot - men come and go, friends come and go, but if you pursue your dreams, that's the memory that will warm your heart at the end of the day and make you love yourself and be proud of yourself, even if you fail...

Let no words from man, stop what God put in your heart!

PS - Butler is a tiny little town up north - Wayne, Paterson area. And Jersey is WAY too expensive! :)

JCB.. Thank You.. I love the last line .. about what God put in my heart.. I just can't seem to stop crying lately.. thinking about pre menapause.. and his now.. youthful choices of the female uterus. As a woman.. you understand me.. and I am not glad you were in the same situation..but.. I am glad you made it through and you can relate. I was hysterical.. last night.. PMSing..maybe. Sometimes we have to feel worse.. before we get stronger. I came internally a long way.. and yet.. gained a lot of weight.. that at my age still can't get rid of.. How old are you? I know.. writing is what I ultimately am meant to do. I want to write screenplays and maybe even for TV Shows. Last night..forgetting my gift.. in tears.. sobbing.. I have no interests.. and forgetting about my talent. About school.. I didn't want to have to drop that kind of money with other loans out.. and so.. many blogs and owners are telling me that they just can't afford to hire..because it slow. I am just not sure.. what to do. I have a Certificate in Childcare. to work in a classroom.. but the pay is low and the school doesn't reinmburse you for the extra schooling you need to keep up your Certificate once you start working and that is not something I can afford to pocket. I am not interested in much else.. except...my love for animals..I was seriously.. considering.a 2 yrs associate as a Vet Tech. But.. you need pre requisits. This can take me three years.. and you can't go nights..just days. I have to make money a lot sooner then that. I am collecting.. and it may just be for another 6 months or this year. I can't afford to work on strt. commission. I don't can't re pay a loan if I am not being hired. How old were you when you went to school? Was it hard? How was the hand on/boards? Its expensive.. here. I did want to work for myself until I was able to make it with the screenwriting. I have been working on that for a year.. I have one almost done. My plan was to achieve that.

I know.. what we endure..makes up stronger..but.. I just wanted to be able to take a course for something that is of interest to me that I can make a deceant living doing. I suppose.. if I were to come up with a solid plan.. I wouldn't feel hopeless..just waiting for the ship here to go down with me and my two dogs on it.. because.. I will land on the street. That is my largest fear. Its hard for me to concentrate on my writing with having to worry about my rent and bills if something happens to my Mother. I need a deceant living.. and the medical field is something I tried out a few or so times and hated it all them. I am artistic. Its a harder fit. I didn't want something very physical.. which is in the Vet.. was an assistant once. I don't know... I need peace of mind financially..so that my writing gets back on track. Once that gets going.. I will be okay .. and maybe then some.. Like J.K. Rowling.. I am a prolific writer.. I can look at a lamp.. have a dream .. watch tv.. listen to a song.. and get a vision and an idea.. for a movie. What do you think would help resolve my financial worries so that I can continue to write my way .. to hopefully success. I wanted this dream since ten. HUGS
