As for the second site, it is also a 15 minute waste of time, full of magazine ads, and "school" ads., then no spa jobs at all! Not a real help! Thanks for the valuable info. tho, i think any other school sounds alot smarter than esthetic school now. Also the forum on this "indeed" jobs site is a real eyeopener regarding the state of skin jobs across the country. if you are thinking of a career in esthetics it's a big eye-opener before spending all that money and finding no jobs in many markets, but tons of people seeking them. |

After doing some ckg. on the sites above, AND on the other biggies; ie: monster, careers.com, and others, there were exactly 0 current esthetic jobs in asheville, and only 2 in all of north carolina! also only a few massage jobs. Just be careful of taking an hourly-paying massage job; the strain and physicallity of the work is very demanding and takes it's toll on joints and the body in general, as any long-performing therapist will testify. most massage careers have a life-expectancy of 4-7years because of the physical demands, injuries, and burnout. just an fyi if youre thinking of attending massage school. i am not doing massage in spas anymore, and know many others who are barely scraping by and paying bills. It may be o.k. if you don't have to depend on this as your bill-paying income, but since alot of the spas in avl. have taken to hourly pay, which is so unfair and disrespectful, you won't earn what you should as the loving healers who you are. love and light to those providers who continue to lend a healing hand. maintain your value! |

Darinda Davis, Privai Academy in Fletcher, North Carolina said: I am proud of Privai and of all of the staff at the school and the spas. $8.50 does sound low, but the commission and gratuity is not being included in that statement so it's truly not accurate for actual income. DO a pay rate comparison for other places on spajobs.com. You have to see the whole picture to make a fact based comparison. I know estheticians who DO make that much and MORE!! And the owners, well I know them personally as I stated above and they have integrity and I experience every day. took your advise and checked spajobs.com to find only 2 jobs currently in the whole state!! not much to insist on the smart choice or the booming "success" and opportunities in the industry implied and drummed up here, for a great career in esthetics. seems like a lot of sales-hype and a sales pitch for the schools. |

Wondering why everyone has dedicated so much time and energy to discussing the down falls of the Privai Academy?? When they can just go to AB-Tech, Haywood Tech, Blue Ridge Tech, or my personal fav McDowell Tech and save a ton of money and get a top notch education that will more than prepare them for the State Board!!! One of McDowell's graduates started at the Spa at Grove Park then moved on to a Derm. office and is now at a Cosmetic Surgeons office; it's what you make of it don't look for jobs on Spa.com get out and work and master your craft!!!! |

Someone who knows... in Asheville, North Carolina 30 months ago |
Just know that these jobs in the business of esthetics are few and far between. Its an ok job, and I mean job...manual labor..not a career....if you really don't need to pay bills or support yourself. I went to school in San Diego (I'm from Asheville, though.) years ago. This is before esthetics schools caught on in Asheville. The "Academy" that I attended was a scam and we all knew it two weeks into it. Is amazing how easily we were all granted loans for five grand. They fill you with all these "possibilities" and all the employment there is to be found out there. They have been doing it for years and they are still doing it. Asheville has just in recent years caught on to it. The same lines are being fed at schools, loans are being made and the cycle continues. I will say that there are some exceptions to my opinion. But these exceptions go along with the old saying... you gotta have money to make money especially in esthetics. I just want to put my opinion out there that you should proceed with caution when considering esthetics as a "career". In my opinion if you want to be in the beauty biz the money is in hair, not skin. |

I am thinking about going to school to become a licensed Esthetician. I liked Privai's Academy website. From and outsider looking in, it appears to be state of the art and very nice. I would appreciate any feedback from anyone who attended. |

In response to your comment, as a graduate of Privai Academy I am very happy with my decision to go into esthetics. I started at a community college and then transferred to Privai, and there is such a big difference! The student clinic is beautiful and looks, feels, and is run much more like an actual spa than where I was before! Seeing both sides, I feel that I was much better prepared for the job I have after graduating from Privai. The products are great also, and learning extra information about product ingredients has been very helpful now that I am in the working world. The level of professionalism is unmatched, as far as I'm concerned, and I feel that at Privai I got all of the tools that I need to be successful. Now I am building a clientele at the spa I work in with an incredibly supportive and talented team of therapists. With dedication, passion, and a positive attitude, you can get everything you need out of your education! |

Thanks for your reply. Your information has been very helpful. If you don't mind my asking did you commute from home to the school or did you stay somewhere near the school? I live in Charlote and that would be to far to commute. |

No problem! I lived in Saluda at the time and it took me about 35 minutes to get there. Now I live just outside of Asheville in Black Mountain. That might be far for you! I would call over there and make an appointment to tour the place and meet with the admissions director. There was another student who lives further away who was looking into a place to stay during the week, so they might have an idea of what to do. Craigslist maybe too? |

Of course there's not a lot of Jobs, you need to make your own way. Get more Education in the Cosmetology Field and you'll be able to stack your Fields together (i.e., waxing/nails). Good luck! |

I heard about a new school opening called Privai Academy and their website looks amazing! I am a current student attending PRIVAI and I must say that I feel that the training that I am receiving exceeds my expectations of what i would have expected. I do believe that there is a huge market for skin care specialist weather it be in Asheville or anywere else. I reccomend to people to go to Craigslist and search the jobs that are avaliable in other areas and not just look in one place. I know that several students are driving from other towns more than an hour away to attend the school which I think really says something about there program. I know that it has been a nice fit for me and I would reccomend visiting and checking out some of there spas. There was alot that this school offers that other programs do not and unless you have completed the program I think that it is really hard to judge.I know that I am about to graduate and I already have a job set up. You have to know going into it that it is what you make of it and you can not wait for things just to come to you . You really have to set your goals high and be a real go getter! |

Heather in Asheville, North Carolina 27 months ago |
After reading some of the comments about Privai I would like to just say that I am a current student attending the program and that it has exceeded my expectations as to what I was looking for in a program. I feel that with the knowledge that I have obtained I will be able to incorporate in any job may it be medical or more spa related. I know for me that I looked into many different programs and that this particular program offers more hands training then the rest. From machines to waxing to the latest skincare techniques. They offer more training and teach you more than just the basics. If you are looking for a fluff program than this is not the place for you.It was alot of hard work and they set very high standards for there students. Which really helps to prepare you an any job market. They offer business and marketing classes that will help guide you. As far as the job market goes for a skincare specialist there is a market out there. I am about to graduate and I have a job already in place. You have to go out and get it is not a profession were things just come to you.If you are not a go getter I would reccomend a different line of work. |

Here we go again!!!! in Asheville, North Carolina 26 months ago |
After reading these posts, again I did not hear anyone putting down the teachers and the people that work for Privai, it has all been about the management! I am not sure Heather if you know that last week according to Privai's website, and right now 3/16/2010 on one of the founders, Ilana Craig Alberico's, LinkenIn profile, Privai is and was an accredited school. Now on the website it says nothing about their accreditation and after doing some research they are not accreditted. So I guess my question is, was privai ever accredited or did they just make that up or were they accredited and lose their accreditation? Either way it just IS NOT RIGHT!!! Again do your research and alway check the facts! peace and good luck! |

Incredulous in Asheville, North Carolina 26 months ago |
I've been working for ISM, the management company for Spa Theology, Suraj Spa|Salon, The Spa At The Inn on Biltmore Estate, Poseidon Spa At The Grand Bohemian, and Privai Academy, for about 3 and a half years now. I can attest to the fact that the women who own and operate this company are driven by the highest of standards and want only the best for their employees. However, they will not continue to invest the time and energy into an employee who is just coming in for a paycheck. I've worked for several of the better-known spas in town and take it from me, the grass isn't greener! I have an associate degree in Cosmetic Science and I take offense to the statements made above concerning my license and my subsequent ability to perform services. For those of you out there who are so obviously misinformed, a cosmetologist's license covers skincare services and nail care services. Anyone who attended a quality school for their licensure will have received more than adequate training in these fields, and you DO have to prove that adequacy to the state board before your license is granted. Furthermore, that licensure is not enough to work for this organization, and every employee also undergoes extensive internal training before being approved to perform these services. For the record, I was not sent any "emergency message" from our business owners asking us to respond to this site. I found this through a friend of mine who had been looking for reviews of the Academy and I was horrified at what I discovered. The slander of this company is being done by former employees who did not invest the time and energy into their own success and expected this company to do all of the work for them. I can identify most of them by the details they've provided, and I find it sad that they are STILL using their time to spread negativity instead of focusing on their own success. No wonder you can't find jobs or hold onto them when you do. Good luck in the future, you're going to need it. |

I have been following this forum for awhile but haven't wanted to say anything until now. I just want to clear up something that Incredulous touched on... The people posting all the negative comments are probably former employees- of course, why else would they say these things. But they are not saying these things because they want to "use their time to spread negativity," they are saying these things because they are essentially grieving. Pain and Anger are part of the grieving process. This company makes such wonderful promises and makes you feel so good and accepted for awhile, they talk a GREAT talk. Then at the end it is essentially like a very bad break up, you leave extremely hurt and with the feeling of betrayal. I have talked with a few people that have worked for them at some point, and they all agree that this the "struggle" they are going through. And if you know who I am, that's fine, I don't really care. I don't walk around bad-mouthing the company, people just want to vent and unfortunately this is how and where it has come out. |

Anyone who thinks they're likely to find an esthetics job or massage job on Indeed.com is fairly delusional. A majority of the jobs in this industry are found by getting out and hitting the pavement with your resume, and showing staff what you can do. |

Look at the NC state board's web site and you'll find Privai's name on the list of accredited schools. I'm not sure what other "research" herewegoagain did to find that it is "not accredited." Much of this conversation seems to be from one individual posting with multiple personalities (examine the writing to see the similarities), someone who is disgruntled for some reason or has another agenda. It's sad that inaccurate and negative info is being accepted as "fact" by some. www.nccosmeticarts.com/AllSchoolMailingList.pdf And their own Web site lists the info, school #324:
False statements about facts that are incredibly easy to obtain make it obvious that other negative statements are likely just as questionable. |

I am very sorry to point out to you that "here we go again!!!!" never said that Privai is not or was not a school(which is the reason you found them on NC Cosmetic Arts website of schools in NC). You might want to learn the difference between being a SCHOOL and an ACCREDITED SCHOOL before you accuse someone of making "False statements about facts" So I will try to help you out, the website to find accredited cosmetic art schools is www.naccas.com. Check the correct facts and let us all know what you find or better yet what you don't!! We all will be waiting anxiously for your reply!! Maybe if you call them you can find out if they never had accreditation or if they lost it... |

massagenewcomer in Brevard, North Carolina 25 months ago |
The state of NC's board site ONLY lists accredited schools on their official list. The site you point to is some independent site that is only a link-catcher, not anything official at all. You might want to learn the difference between factual web sites run by state boards and sites that are written by any old person out there. |
|
massagenewcomer in Brevard, North Carolina 25 months ago |
Just to clarify, the state board does not use the word "accredited" for esthetics schools, the rules say "approved" schools and that's what the board lists on the PDF. "Accredited" is a term that's more commonly associated with degree-based education and is a designation given by agencies/orgs who monitor that type of institution. |

A big fyi: this comp. is one of the most underhanded and devisive i have ever seen. The owners and mgmt., tell prospective students and hires all sorts of made up nonsense to get their money, then DO NOT deliver. The School is so lame, and they promise jobs, but only one or two people have ever gotten them. They pay a terrible hourly rate, and are trying to undermine the massage and spa business with this. They will tell people how the hourly rate will be so helpful; but it really just puts more money in their pockets, while they book out massage people till their arms break to get the most out of them, while paying garbage. Truly unfair. Don't be fooled by their mock-entusiasm, or false, initial devotion. They are only out for themselves! |

Two fellow students in my class were going to a community college and left it, losing a majority of their credit hours in order to come to Privai when it opened it's doors. It's a fast paced school but you learn so much and not only are you well prepared to pass your state boards, you are prepared to market yourself to employers and perform treatments that you might not have been exposed to in a community college. It's just a whole other level of education. You feel it the moment you walk into the beautiful clinic. How's that working out for ben and gloria? don't think either are in their positions any longer. hopefully moved on to healthier pursuits with better prospects. best of luck to both, and congrats. on getting out of the mouth of the beast. i know all about the ism, privai academy, etc. and there is not a person who has worked there or been to school there who has been treated with the dignity and respect deserved. many good technicians and skilled providers have tried to and have left because of the extremely negative effects of working with a place which lacks basic integrity. good luck> |

Who is hiring aside from the revolving doors at the ism properties or gpi, both of which treat staff like cattle, with pay and insensitivity. Wake up and smell the green tea, Avl., is a small town and outlying areas are seasonal at best. This ill-concieved idea is a joke. good luck. i know most esth. in town. and they are holding on to what they have...so no openings for newbies. New places are extremely slow and building is a long process, during which you won't be paying bills if you live on your payck. Just a word to try to help others not be decieved, and pay hard earned money to this co. that doesn't care about students, staff, or employees; just ask around some more. |

Do NOT be taken in by those posing here as innocent observers, when truly they are the owners/mgrs. of the biz, trying to drum up business from those seeking truthful answers and insight. It is tiresome to deal with this group who will do anything to be "celebrities in their own minds." There are many less expensive, and better schools if you feel that this is your calling. Do be aware that there are few openings in asheville, and as a new licensee it will be challenging to find a good-paying job that you can live on. My advise is do more research before paying the HIGH tuition. You wind up with the same license in the end, and that's what really counts. Asheville is saturated with spa folks looking for work and a decent wage, and unless you can afford to wait and to grow your business/clientele, it may not be the place to be. best wishes. |

just wondering if you are still happy and working with ism...don't think so. it's easy to be positive at the beginning and when all the excitement and positive attention is coming your way. until you start to see the sad truth behind all the masks. We are not being negative for no reason, we are attempting to HELP others from wasting thier money, and being decieved. Someone has to tell the TRUTH! I wonder how many former employees/students/staff have great things to say now. I wish all in the field the best, but also want to use my experience to Help them avoid the dismal reality that this place offers. Most of the original "rah-rah" responses are from people who aren't there anymore, and who wrote in the glow of the beginning falsity they were lulled into. Don't think any of the orig. mgmt., besides owners and dorinda are even there anymore...couldn't take it. and who could blame them?! |

Obviously, someone is disgruntled for whatever reason and you know - you can't please everyone all the time. I have been consulting for Privai for almost 2 years. While EVERY business has bumps in the road, the one thing I can give these woman credit for is the willingness to listen and grow from experience. I have committed to writing an amazing massage curriculum for a future program and I have over 20 years experience and I am incredibly dedicated to this field. I would never want a program that was not the BEST. When I was asked to write the program The first thing I said was NO! i do not want to be a part of these slam them out programs that teach nothing . I am in the healing arts, a "profession", passionate and dedicated. These woman gave me carte blance to write an incredible program soon to exceed the expectations of others. I have seen them work hard to obtain credability. I have been to the esthetics classes, I have received their treatments - the setting is EXTREMELY professional. The instructor Debra Andersen is dedicated and loves her students. I was impressed with the students level of professionalism, which is lacking in MANY places/schools. I was even asked to come in and present a class on touch. I'm on the road in Kansas City right now teaching continuing education. I am successful with my classes and don't need to be affiliated with a school. I choose to raise the standards and honor the opportunity to work along with Privai to raise the bar. As for a duck - just let it roll off your back ladies of Privai. Visit Privai, talk to the instructors, and the students, check out the curriculum. |

Do you still feel this way Debra? after the way you have been treated. that is sad. |

Let's be real in Asheville, North Carolina 18 months ago |
Well unlike some that have commented on here. I did attend Privai, graduated and have been licensed for over 6 months. I am very successful maybe I was lucky with the economy struggling but what profession isn't? The women that own the company may not be the girls next door and I really don't care, but what I can say is they have been smart as far as the people they brought on board. Maybe not smart enough to know when they have a good thing and how to treat people, they are business women: that’s it! I myself paid alot of money to attend this school unlike some that have bigger opinions. I would do it again because of the instructors and the experience, see I took my state exam and finished with flying colors. I was very observant during the test and before, so I was able to see first hand what the other schools are sending out. Although it was alot of money and I didn’t care too much for the owners. However I am grateful for the education I received from the women and Ben:) that helped me along the way. At the end of the day I received a great education in Esthetics because of the curriculum that Debra & Darrinda put together and anyone who attends Privai will receive the same, leave the politics to the politicians. From what I understand the owners have stepped out of the way so all these posts are doing is hurting the instructors and from what I have read most of you care for them. I mean I don't shop at Ingles because I love the fact that Bob Ingle is the best guy in the world. Iam thankful that my instructors had passion and huge hearts and I thank God that we were all at the same place at the same time. I wish all of them luck and everyone on here peace for whatever traumatic experience they have had with these women. THANK YOU:Debra, Darrinda, Laura, Gloria, and Ben! ! ! |

I work for both Privai Academy and ISM and I can attest to the fact that Privai Academy is an amazing school with compassionate, knowledgeable instructors and anyone who is attending or has graduated knows that. It's such a shame that some feel the need to express their dissatisfaction in this way. If you have an issue with the school or with the owners, I invite you to make an appointment with us and address it in a professional, ethical manner. We would love to sit down with you and find out what has caused this to resurface after a year of silence. Actually, we would love to find out why this started in the first place. It appears you have been hurt somehow by the school/owners. If you really stand behind your accusations, why not give us the opportunity to correct the situation in person, rather than hiding behind the safety of anonymity? |

Let us know how you are in a Yr. Maybe then you will see that This is about HELPING others in making positive healthy and well informed choices. There are MANY of us who have been where you are, why do you think so many responses? People who care for our Industry and who can speak in an open forum are valuable. No one is hiding, simply not interested in more psycho-drama, or communication w/that biz. It is our civic right to speak openly and share both sides rather than just Hyped up sales pitches. people here are speaking from alot of experience, and your reply shows mor of the disregard for open honest communication that is halmark of the mgmt/owners. Debra and darinda are nice women, it is not personal. best wishes to you. |

I have, and most are not happy, employed, nor making the money expected. ck your facts. I know many who are very disappointed they spent the extra money to attend that school. i could recount many stories about misleading practices, broken promises, and overcharges. Also blatant deciet. we won't go there, but keep your eyes open. good luck. |

Geez, enough already. All that matters is that the instructors provide the best possible education for students, and from what I've seen, they do. Who really cares about the rest of it. You don't like the owners? Fine, don't work at their properties, but stop loading the boards with untrue information about the school. I know several people who've come out of community colleges totally unprepared for the practical and written examinations -- a year blown. At Privai, you learn what's actually required to work in a spa setting -- no BSing around and no slacking off -- and the state boards are a piece of cake. If you think you'll find a job in bodywork without getting out there and promoting yourself, find another career because that doesn't happen too often. Or open your own business and see exactly what it's like to actually keep something afloat and growing. It's not easy. |

Thank you all for this info. I seriously have the mountain express opened to their add "only 4 weeks left to enroll." I have been seriously considering Privai but not anymore. Just too many red flags for me. I'll seek my schooling elsewhere. Thanks again. |

Telling people to give their money to this school seems really sad, when we know what it perpetuates. Abusive places keep only those who are in co-dependant cycles and are willing to stay while being kicked. Just for the record I did not quit. I did step down as Director of Education and continued to teach the massage class. The massage school did not start another program at this time so I am not currently working at Privai. Despite any business differences, the courses are very well written and executed. The instructors are dedicated. All the students I know in both programs have passed all their in house tests with flying colors. I cannot speak for what happens after wards. The truth be known it doesn't matter what school you graduate from you still have to network, provide quality customer service and find the appropriate job that fits you. This exists everywhere in every state. I happen to be a continuing education provider and have decided it is in my best interest to continue focusing on my own business. I have been doing this for years and I do love having my own business and providing quality classes for massage students. So thank you for your concern. I am happy doing what I love. I accept responsibility for what I do and how I do it. Good Luck to all the students who graduate from Privai ~ Much Success! |

Wow, for an instructor you have some really crappy spelling. Maybe they should hire someone who graduated high school without cheating. Poor students. |

This has been an interesting read, especially for someone that has worked with both students of the Academy and for the company. It is true that locals do not think highly of this company, nor do other body workers. I still am not sure why the Academy closed after one year? The students of massage that I have encountered do not have the education that I received and I have yet to see an official brochure with the classes and hours to understand why their training was not sufficient in which to begin a massage career. I have not worked with any graduates of the Academy and am not aware of the company hiring any? I find that curious. The company is like any other "growing" company. Are they evil? no. I think they are the same as most....nothing different or substantial about them, though there are claims that state otherwise. They pay you an hourly rate in addition to you tips. your tips are 18 percent of your treatment. There are not usually any additional tips beyond this. I find this curious and have not seen this practice outside the Big Spas in Asheville. It is not enough to live on and most employees work more than this one job to make ends meet. Is this the industry? Somewhat. The problem lies in the schools and what information they are putting out to students with unrealistic expectations of earnings. Asheville is over run with massage therapists, I think most may move here to work at one of the big spas and when they realize that they are required to be robots they move on....thus flooding the market.I have not seen low pay for LMTs as exists here. Not sure when and if things will change, but I hope so. |
