Hello, my name is Wendi, and I have recently decided that I would like to go to school to become an esthetician. I have done a lot of research online, as well as going down in person to a few of the local schools. I think I have gathered all of the information that I need to have, however, would still like to get as much input as possible regarding getting in to this field. If anyone could help with answering any of the questions I have listed below I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance. :-)

1. I currently live in Jacksonville, and am strongly considering moving to West Palm Beach. Out of all of the schools offering Esthetics programs in these two cities, is any one school considered to have a better course than any of the others? And just the same, are there any schools who's program is recommend to stay away from?

2. I know that to become a licensed "Face Specialist" you are required to complete a minimum of 260 hours in the state of Florida, and to become a licensed "Full Specialist" you have to complete a minimum of 500 hours. What are the major differences as far as limitations to what services you can preform with each license?

3. I would one day like to be able to do Botox, chemical peels, etc. What are the requirements to be able to preform those and other similar services?

4. What is the difference, if any, between an esthetician, and an aesthetician?

5. Is there any other additional input or advice that you wish you had before you got started in this field?

Thank you all so much for your time, and I look forward to hearing your responses. :-)

I hope someone with Florida specific knowledge will stop by and answer your question. In the meantime:

- Botox is an injectable, and typically is offered by a nurse, nurse practitioner or doctor. You can't do it with an esthetician license, it's not in your scope of practice.

- Chemical peels can usually be performed by those with an esthetician license (though I don't know if the Florida Face vs Full credential might limit what can be done) however State Board usually limits the depth of peel that can be performed (by stipulating percentage of acid used and pH of the solution)

- the difference between esthetician and aesthetician is primarily one of spelling/semantics. However, you'll often find aesthetician used more among a/estheticians practicing in the medical field.

Hope this helps

Wendy,

What route did you go with? I too am in Jax and am torn on what school to attend. Most schools are limited here and do not offer the esthetician cert only. Please respond !
