naren in Sacramento, California said: Can any one tell me which book I read for esthetician and from where can I purchase? The Milady's practice book has proven to be very helpful to my students. I can not remember the exact name of the book. Also for anyone who needs additional training for the practical or written and you are located in California, you can go to www.conceptsinstitute.com this is one of our specialties.. |

Keren Espinoza in Rohnert Park, California said: HI, Tracie I'm Keren I've been an esthetician for about two years in the state of Georgia, I recently moved to California and I had to take the state board exam again to transfer my license. Unfortunatly I was only able to take the written part of the exam. But I'm supposed to be getting ready for the practical part wich I'm taking next month. I would really like to trade services with you and since the practical exam is a little different from the one I took in GA I would really apreciate it if you could help me out with that. I'm currently in Rohnert Park but as soon as I pass the exam I'm supposed to start a job in Mill Valley. Please let me know if you are interested. Could you tell me anything about the test in GA? I will be taking it in a few months and would love any information you might have and what to focus on- more for the written and was it hard? Thanks. My e-mail is lauriesilverman@mindspring.com or you can call me at 678-887-8995. |

From what i remember when i took it back in 06. you get the models ready in the room you will be doing ur pratical. make sure you model is dressed very simple as well, oh and i would recommend sandels for them to wear too. no makeup and no piercings or any type of jewerly w/ hair pulled back. i just took mine on july 1, 2007 and this is very accurate! |

Ramona in San Jose, California said: Trinidad, thanks for your help Heather. I passed the state board exam in july - I study on the stateboardquiz.com site and on the mylady website for the written part. For the practical part I bought a dvd from one of the kit companys and watched that until I wanted to shoot myself..vey boring but also very helpful in preparing me for what to expect. Also it helped ease some nerves. Good luck!! |

Hi, I am an esty student in Co. I would like to know how to get reliable info on the practical test in CA. Is there a class I can take just for taking the practical since I didn't go to school there? |
|
lisa in Fontana, California 46 months ago |
hi. I had the same question as you, except I schooled in CA over 20 yrs. ago got my date for testing and had 3 wks to study! I bought MILADY's Standard comprehensive training for esty's exam review and studied the heck out of that with flash cards..then i bought a dvd for the practical part..watched that about 10 times, but i think the most helpful was stateboardquiz.com. I must have taken that online quiz 50 times and wrote down all the questions to study whenever. I did see about 20 questions on MY test from that site. The other questions were from only God knows where!! As long as you understand what you've learned, use some common sense (they ask questions tricky) You should be fine. the electric pulverizer came up ALOT on my test as did what types of herbs to use on different skin conditions. Knowing what procedure to perform on someone with a pacemaker is a good thing...stateboardquiz.com probably kicked my over to passing. Milady's was pretty useless when it comes to terms of passing the stateboard exam, but lots of good info. my dvd ($80 bucks..ugg) was really helpful too...I think you can get one cheaper. goodluck! hope this helps! if you have any more questions, I can do my best to help! |
|
lisa in Fontana, California 46 months ago |
yes-FLASH CARDS!!! it will help you absorb the idea, as opposed to just the answer. Just keep doing them over and over, then when you get a question you don't recognise, you'll find that you can retrieve similar information (in your mind) from the flash cards!!!

practice not touching the product bottles to your palm and cotton ball when dispensing, do everything over the trash bag, wash your hands if you touch anything that is not on your SMA before u touch the model, WIPE OUT THE SINK after u wash your hands (a biggie!!!) sharpen makeup pencil and clean out sharpener (over trash of course). Hmmmmm.what else? be confident and smile! i passed on july 1, 2008! |

I went to Miladyonline.com. It cost me $27.50;They emailed me a written practice test/answers(great). I took my test yesterday and passed. Some of the questions from the practice test were on my written test. Also, you have acess to the online test/answers. I really recommend it. My problem was that I've been sick and off work for four month's and was having difficulty concentrating, etc...so I didn't get much studying done. But I still passed, thank god. |

I am taking my test September 2. I have a couple of questions that i havent seen on this forum yet. First, i was wondering about a few things on the list for practical: Container and supplies for Preparation of wet and dry sanitary maintanance area - this could really vary so im not sure what they are looking for. Is it a closed container labeled clean for the dry one, and a cold tray filled with solution for the wet one? Appropriate draping for all services. - does this mean a sheet, head wrap, do you drape a towel across the chest etc? For the facial part of the exam: do you perform a whole facial or just cleanse, scrub, massage? Dermal light: someone said you run your hand over the light, ive never been taught dermal light period in utah. so im not sure what that means. Lastly; do I really need to go buy a $50 wax heater so that i can put COLD wax in it? do you mock turning it on, and put 1 oz wax into a portion cup and set it in the heater? |
|
heather in Los Angeles, California 46 months ago |
your kit will have everything u need. the model will have a gown, and a head drape. u dont need a sheet or towel, everyhting will be labled including soil coinatiner, etc.... u dont have to do anything but perform the services. the facial is 1. cleanse 2. scrub (or 2. Dermal) 3. Massage 4. toner

Ive seen a few different places that sell kits or rent them. Some are only available near the fairfield location, I will be in glendale. Do I buy one ahead of time or near the testing location? |
|
hopeishope in Lakeside, California 46 months ago |
you can rent one with "Western Kit Comp" I'm taking my test Aug 26 ..I will sent you the phone number....I have to look for it! |
|
heather in El Monte, California 46 months ago |
I rented from Cosmo Kit Co. they are right next to the testing place in glendale and they were great and the owner went thru the kit w/ me and gave me very valuable tips and suggestions. she demo'd how to assemble the chair etc.. so i would already be familiar w/ it. they also offer classes to take a mock exam it looks just like the real set up.

I'm moving from Hawaii (where I went to school) to the Bay area in a month or so...I haven't any idea how to do the practical.. Does anyone have an old DVD they'd be willing to sell used? As I don't have any friends/family there, I was wondering how I could find a model. Can we use a man, or does it have to be female? (If so... gonna make the boyfriend do it. ahhahah) |
