new inexperienced esthetician

Hi everyone,
I graduated from school a year ago. I had some minor setbacks so I didn't get my license until September '09. I'm having a lot of trouble finding a job in the spa business since September, about 6 months now. The response I usually get is either there are no positions at this time or they're looking for someone with more experience. I actually was able to get in with 2 different interviews in which case I never heard from the spas that interviewed me, again. Can anyone give me some advice? Anything would help. I'm very patient but I am starting to feel discouraged.
And also, can someone give me some insight on how to write my resume? I had 600hr of training and hold my license in 2 states, 3 years in cosmetic retail for Lancome as a beauty advisor and currently, I'm working as a customer service rep for a renowned bank(1 year to date). Please, any input would be greatly appreciated!

Take whatever classes you can get your hands on until you can find a job. There are online classes, webinars, trade show classes etc., to keep you "in the game" so to speak. And certifications you achieve should be given with your resume to perspective employers. It seems to be a tough market in most areas of the country right now. Take care,

Hi Everyone... I was looking and looking for some new graduates and some Honest.. answers.. I wanted the truth.. last night a woman from CA.. said she wished she never went .. because she owes the school and can't re pay.. has no work. I was going to go this route.. but.. decided I can't manage on comission only and that is what most pay. They say Medical and Food area are recession proof.. I want to share the ideas I had before.. Medical Esthetician Courses/Work seems the way to go.. and best to look into for steady stable work..in Drs. Offices.. with benefits. I was going to go to as many Bridal Shows/expos..as I could .. rent a table .. get busines cards and service brochures made up... On them.. put. Bridal Party Makeup.. Bachelorette Spa Parties.. Teen/sweet 16 Spa Parties/sleep over spa parties. Make Spa Baskets.. you can throw in you make pet baskets.. if you know how to make homemade dog treats say.. its easy.. and everyone has pets. Call/Go to a Univeristy or.. State College and see if they offer a Theatrical Make Up class. My Univeristy offers it cheaper if you come into the credit cours for this .. wanting no credit.. you don't have to take exams.. your just there to learn the skill.. Free lance yourself/contract out to Opera Houses.. Ballet.. Theatres where they need this. If you can take a Massage class at night. Yoga.. something else to add.. People love wellness that is the next big area.. Hollistic Areas of healing the body. There are many on line classes. Go on line to Color Me Beautiful.. they offer a lot of free info. You can and should .. order their DVD for 90.00 to become a color expert .. for seasonal.. makeup.. clothes.. Its another service to add. Its worth it. Spray Tanning is so..in style and used a lot..they machines can be costly.. but perhaps you can get a loan or families help/support. You have to put out money to make money. Go for an Organic Product. Kids can us

Advertise for Prom and Special Occassion Make Up. Go to High End Strip Clubs.. Hooters.. there are many.. Modeling Agencies.. And Yes.. Escort Services.. these are all high end clients who make thousands a day and these women depend on their looks and will drop the money. Go to Up Scale Business Park areas and drop off your cards.. Get someone to create a web site.. and advertise in phone books. Business Directories.. Extreme Lash.. is the best Permanent Eye Lash Extensions around they cost 300.00 to install and abouts. 75-90.00 a month to upkeep.. the clients I mention depend on these.. Brides.. Brides Maids..All will pay for this.. Proms. You can have steady busines from this. There are about six total classes towards becoming an Advanced Sylist and they are not ... cheap.. but this is a Huge money maker.. Theatre People and Opera Houses.. Ballet.. will use this service their jobs depend on this glam. Its also steady income while your doing their makeup.. add up how much this service cost.. you can make 5 grand or close to it.. doing all I mentioned. The more places you go.. the more hooters.. agencies etc.. this increases your chances.. then you can get a massage therapist or another esthetician to go half and rent a room or space somewhere until your ready to go on your own or work from home. You can add cosmetology program or nails going at night.. also. Pet massage to people..My dogs love it! You can move towards Wellness from beauty which is where things are ultimately headed anyways with the health care mess.. Essential Oils you can sell and use...even as perfume.. Make Up gift Baskets.. and oils. You can do color and light therapy.. and aroma therapy on line courses short term very. You can sell eyemasks herb

You can eventually sell herbal teas.. in your spa baskets.. which is nice with a mug and slippers... mabe a spa robe. You can check out becoming a tong ren therapist.. which also works on animals and has been proven but the AMA doesnt't want to .. for curing cancer.. its on You Tube.. and there aren't many trained yet ..in this healing method. You can work part time at a Cosmetic Counter in a Department Store.. where they love.. love.. to hire Estheticians and you meet brides.. keep your business cards in your pocket.. and don't schedule yourself the weekend.. they need you to work becaus you will make triple for one day. You can go to all the stores and get a copy of all the Bridal Registries.. however you can. You will get a lot of referrals. If you take some Wilton Cake Decorating Classes at night.. you can also mention and advertise you make wedding cakes or sheet cakes .. they can be simply stated.. ellegant.. but not over the top. Classic.. Or. for bridal showers .. baby showers..Anniverseries even.. Cross Sell Your extra skills. If none of this helps you or works.. and I would be shocked if it did not.. you need to find and take a Medical Esthetician Course somewhere. You can also leave business cards at Dermatologist Office.. Plastic Surgeons.. but.. you need to offer them a service or two... in exchange for.. or..advertise them on your web page.. ask them for refferals after you serviced them.. and always.. get testimonies from your customers and take camera picks .. creating a portfolio..incase brides want to see it. Trade Shows... and Many Bridal Shows..Go outside of your areas to cities.. where there are a lot of people.. Real Estate Agnecies.. Stock Brokers.. Banks..Accountants.. all make good money and would buy service.. You can even go into buisness's and see if you can give free.. facials once you can obtain a product line.. and from that you get business.. Casinos... another place.. Resort.. Spas.. Organic Products all natural.. are what people want. You will have to eventually if you go it alone.. cater to the high end client with say sparkling water.. fruits.. cheese .. crackers.. veggies.. whatever they like.. its up to you to ask and take it down. Its a lot .. I know.. you'll be busy.. but you have to put the money out to make it. Sell your spa baskets on your website..Hollistic Facials are also nice for Cancer Patients and make them feel better.. grown or children.. Hospitals are another avenue. Oncologist Best Of Luck..

hi every one i recently got my license in esthetic and i have some questions . i am worried i hear how slow the business is out there and how hard it is to get a job. i need help with my resume i do not even know where to begin pls helpwith any info. also i made some mistakes in my past and have a past recored is this something that would effect me in the industrie pls be honest i need all the help i can get thanks / angie phx az

This seems to be the little dirty secret of esthetics school, all the schools tell us that there are plenty of jobs with baby boomers, but no one tells us that no one wants to hire fresh out of school. I would suggest doing an internship/or work as a spa coordinator. If you get hired as a spa coordinator, work there for a while and let them see you do a good job. Then ask the manager to put you on as a back-up esthetician, so when the other esthetician is out sick or is on vacation the employer will call you for those appts.
