on Thursday I got hired but I refused to go to Boston or Washington, I'm waiting for SFO or LAX, does someone else waiting for the same domiciles? And does anyone know how long should I wait for those spots to be opened. Thanks a lot |

I have three excellent friends who work for UAL. LAX and SFO are very senior based domiciles. It takes years, or dumb luck as a reserver. In the beginning, you just have to wait it out! |

When you are first on line as a reserve.. it is always a better choice to go to a junior base rather than a senior base. Learning the ropes can be tough from the senior mama's. Plus junior bases are a lot of fun.

And does anyone know how long should I wait for those spots to be opened. Thanks a lot Kat...from one Cat to another...you should just take the job if they offer it to you. They have never offered domicile choice before, this is something new for them. The problem is , Kat, is that while you are waiting to be based where you want to be, others are getting hired and accruing seniority (which is precious in the job, let me tell you). Take the job. Commit to being somewhere new for 6 mos (you can always commute, but never mention that you might be doing so in your interviews). You fly for free, so commuting is really not a biggie. It is a bit stressful when you are on probation, that is why I recommend that you get a temporary pad at the base for 6 mos. After that, you can put your transfer through to wherever you want. Transfers process every week, and they have been clearing for the bases you want. Really, the airline industry changes a lot, with potential buy-outs, merges etc...if you really want a job as a Flight Attendant, you should take the one the offer you...when your 6 mos are up, you find yourself based where you want to be...you will be senior to the new-hires that have waited the 6 mos to get a training date to be based there. This is just a recommendation, but I have been there a long time and I always encourage potential trainees to take the job oppportunity while it is there for you. Whatever you decide, Good luck!....maybe we will fly together sometime out of LA : )......peace..Cat |

Isn't there some kind of deal where new hires can't be juniored into the A position until they have had a year? (unless the whole crew has less than a year.....). How could you have had to fly A with some senior crews working the trip? That sounds like a nightmare to me. I think you kinda got some bad luck....most of us in LA don't mind working with new hires....true, they lack experience, but they are usually enthusiastic and pleasant , and that makes the trip fun. Where are you based now? Cat |

Can someone tell me what the flight benefits are like with United? Do you fly for free everywhere they go, or is there a fee for flights out of the country? Also, does your family fly for free? |

jenny in Lehi, Utah said: Can someone tell me what the flight benefits are like with United? Do you fly for free everywhere they go, or is there a fee for flights out of the country? Also, does your family fly for free? Hi, the flight benefits are...free travel in coach anywhere that united flies....for yourself, your spouse (or domestic partner), your children, and your parents (one set of parents). Business and First there is a nominal fee....it depends on where you are flying to. You also have companion travel....24 point to point segments a year per employee for their friends/companions. ( I personally have found that I don't use these very much. Lots of times you can buy a discounted ticket that is positive space (not space available, stand-by, like the travel I have told you about above) for not much more than companion fares. ). They HAVE come in handy for friends/family who are traveling unexpectedly, like for a death in family or something like that. I believe the travel benefits are similar , or better to most in the industry. Hope this helps. Good luck in your hiring process : ) Cat |

This Wednesday? So is mine. I'm really nervous. Trying to think of what i'm going to be asked. I hope everything works out for you. |

Bill in Mechanicsville, Virginia 8 months ago |
Yes at 12:30. I am really nervous as well. However I have 23 years customer service experience so I will just be myself and hope for the best. Adrienne, I wish you the best as well. From what everyone has told me is to be yourself, and smile. I can understand about being nervous. |

Yea. I'm pretty sure they can weed you out if you are not being yourself. And that's all we can do is hope for the best. So I wish everyone luck if it's with a first pre screen or person to person interview. |

Bill in Mechanicsville, Virginia said: Hi Cat, Hi Bill, My father has worked for American for many years, and he also has flight passes. I imagine that all airlines have some kind of passes.....also, when you work for an airline, other airlines give you discount passes as well.....they give you 75 or 90% off full fare...depending on the airline. Only bummer is that all passes are stand-by...and planes tend to be full nowadays....still...it is a benefit, for sure. Good luck this week! Please let me know if I will be seeing you on the line : )...Cat |

Chris, if you have an interview tomorrow, you should have considered going out Sunday night.....getting a hotel room, or even (worst case scenario) taking an all-nighter out....just to cover yourself. That cuts down on expenses. Remember on average you'll be away from home at least 18 to 20 days a month. |

Granted you live near your "Home Base". Good Luck |

My moms friend told me some information about being a flight attendent. You can on reserve which is if someone calls out then they'll ask you. but other than that beingon reserve you don't get paid. I was also told that your pay does not start until those doors close. So say there's a delay for 4 or 5 hours...your not getting paid for that. Does anyone know otherwise. I'm feeling alittle discouraged. I don't wanna feel like I'm walking into to some BS you know |

What they do is they pay you for a set amount of hours each month. If you have more actual flight hours versus the set amount they pay you the difference.

Bill in Mechanicsville, Virginia said: Hi Chele, Bill , you have a lot of accurate info on this site...is your interview today? Good luck, my friend : ). If someone needs a set schedule, then maybe a 9-5 job is better for them. (nothing wrong with that, most people have it ). If you are flexible, then maybe this career is for you. If you are on reserve, you get your schedule 1 month ahead of time. So, you can know around the middle of the previous month, what your days off are for the next month. You can be gone up to 6 days at a time, but that depends on what you bid on. Commuters will usually bid the long blocks (of days)on ,with the longer blocks off, so they have more time at home (since they have to commute there). Some like to bid 4 on 3 off so that they can know that the next month they will have all...say Sun/Mon/Tues off....or whatever. I always looked at reserve like this.....I have my 11 days all to myself. The other days, belong to United. That is kind of a mindset you have to get and make the best of it.

( waiting for a mechanical to be fixed, weather delay, etc). There are limits on holding times etc. If anyone is really interested, I would suggest you go to our unions website and read our contract. www.unitedafa.org. Cat : Cat, I have done alot of research with this job before I applied. My 2nd interview is tomorrow at 12:30 and I am nervous. But I am hopefull I will get hired. I will just be myself and hope for the best. For me I have a part time sales consultaing job that I can do anywhere so that will supplment my income.

Cat : That sounds great Bill (though I would not mention that job at all to anyone at the interview process, in training, or on probation....) They like to know that you are focused on being a Flight Attendant primarily : ). Also, someone on this site posted some very interesting questions that they said United had asked them....maybe just scroll up and double check....it always helps to be prepared : ). I am sure you will do great! Good Luck! (fingers crossed : )...Cat |

hey everyone. i have my spherion interview on tuesday march 11th. I am sooo nervous. it seems like most people on here have a lot of experience in many fields. I am a bartender at applebees and have been there about 2 and 1/2 years. this seems like a great opportunity and I am definitely nervous. I have a few years of college experience and have my real estate license in virginia, but I am only 22 and I have heard they do not like to hire so young and inexperienced. is this true? Im just freaking out lol. I am very nervous and excited. is anyone else going this tuesday coming up? please let me know!! I think it would be great to be able to find someone going through the same thing. thanks |

I am a 23 year old bartender and I got hired so I don't think that should be a concern. |
