I don't want to discuss my interview as I signed a agreement. However take the train it cost's 4 dollars and takes the same time and really easy to get to. They will send you the directions.

Hey Man, if its its not too late take the position based in Boston or Washington. I have three excellent friends who work for UAL. LAX and SFO are very senior based domiciles. It takes years, or dumb luck as a reserver. In the beginning, you just have to wait it out!

When you are first on line as a reserve.. it is always a better choice to go to a junior base rather than a senior base. Learning the ropes can be tough from the senior mama's. Plus junior bases are a lot of fun.
I was based in Denver.. very senior and not so much fun. Especially when I was placed in the A position on my second flight... and I had a crew with 25 years.
If you pick a senior base... know your stuff 100% because the folks on line are not there to train you... they will expect you to know everything.
When you are junior its better to be with your own kind... trust me. =)

Kat...from one Cat to another...you should just take the job if they offer it to you. They have never offered domicile choice before, this is something new for them. The problem is , Kat, is that while you are waiting to be based where you want to be, others are getting hired and accruing seniority (which is precious in the job, let me tell you). Take the job. Commit to being somewhere new for 6 mos (you can always commute, but never mention that you might be doing so in your interviews). You fly for free, so commuting is really not a biggie. It is a bit stressful when you are on probation, that is why I recommend that you get a temporary pad at the base for 6 mos. After that, you can put your transfer through to wherever you want. Transfers process every week, and they have been clearing for the bases you want. Really, the airline industry changes a lot, with potential buy-outs, merges etc...if you really want a job as a Flight Attendant, you should take the one the offer you...when your 6 mos are up, you find yourself based where you want to be...you will be senior to the new-hires that have waited the 6 mos to get a training date to be based there. This is just a recommendation, but I have been there a long time and I always encourage potential trainees to take the job oppportunity while it is there for you. Whatever you decide, Good luck!....maybe we will fly together sometime out of LA : )......peace..Cat

Malti....do you fly for UAL? Isn't there some kind of deal where new hires can't be juniored into the A position until they have had a year? (unless the whole crew has less than a year.....). How could you have had to fly A with some senior crews working the trip? That sounds like a nightmare to me. I think you kinda got some bad luck....most of us in LA don't mind working with new hires....true, they lack experience, but they are usually enthusiastic and pleasant , and that makes the trip fun. Where are you based now? Cat

I was with CAL and based in Denver.
You are correct.. flying the A position on my second flight was a nightmare. I was on reserve, and the A position is what scheduling gave me.
It was a horrible 4 day.. I will never forget that trip as long as I live...
but.. after that experience.. I feel it made me an even better FA.
The seniors were rough and old People's Express gals. They were not too happy with new hires... and they let me know it. But, I got threw it.. it was painful
to no end. But.. I got threw it.
After about a year, I flew with one of the same ladies... and she commented I was A+ at my position.. and thought for sure I would have quit after flying with her before. Nope.. she just made me stronger. =)

CAT: Funny, my first trip was with an LAX crew on A320.. alternative lifestyle males... The best flight I ever worked!
I loved that trip so much I wanted to transfer out of DEN to LAX.
My first trip was heaven.. my second was hell. I learned a lot in my first two weeks of flying. If I could do it all over.. I would have gone to EWR with my class and held a line right out of training. Instead, I selected DEN because it was hard base to get into and I wanted to have the experience.
Live and learn. =)

Hi, the flight benefits are...free travel in coach anywhere that united flies....for yourself, your spouse (or domestic partner), your children, and your parents (one set of parents). Business and First there is a nominal fee....it depends on where you are flying to. You also have companion travel....24 point to point segments a year per employee for their friends/companions. ( I personally have found that I don't use these very much. Lots of times you can buy a discounted ticket that is positive space (not space available, stand-by, like the travel I have told you about above) for not much more than companion fares. ). They HAVE come in handy for friends/family who are traveling unexpectedly, like for a death in family or something like that. I believe the travel benefits are similar , or better to most in the industry. Hope this helps. Good luck in your hiring process : ) Cat

Hi Bill, My father has worked for American for many years, and he also has flight passes. I imagine that all airlines have some kind of passes.....also, when you work for an airline, other airlines give you discount passes as well.....they give you 75 or 90% off full fare...depending on the airline. Only bummer is that all passes are stand-by...and planes tend to be full nowadays....still...it is a benefit, for sure. Good luck this week! Please let me know if I will be seeing you on the line : )...Cat

Chris, if you have an interview tomorrow, you should have considered going out Sunday night.....getting a hotel room, or even (worst case scenario) taking an all-nighter out....just to cover yourself. Anyways, good luck to you! Let us know how it goes.....Cat

New hires, if single generally live in housing that may have two to four people in a bedroom. That cuts down on expenses. Remember on average you'll be away from home at least 18 to 20 days a month.

My moms friend told me some information about being a flight attendent. You can on reserve which is if someone calls out then they'll ask you. but other than that beingon reserve you don't get paid. I was also told that your pay does not start until those doors close. So say there's a delay for 4 or 5 hours...your not getting paid for that. Does anyone know otherwise. I'm feeling alittle discouraged. I don't wanna feel like I'm walking into to some BS you know

Allot of people will tell you wrong things. I am told that you do get paid for being on reserve. What they do is they pay you for a set amount of hours each month. If you have more actual flight hours versus the set amount they pay you the difference.
Yes you might not get paid on delays but there is alot to look at versus on issue. I always say look at the whole package they offer you. For me it will be worth it as I will get Health Care.

I read many positive and negative
opinions and experiences here.
They(their system) may not be detail-oriented or not getting back to you with the best answers to your questions or requests.
I also thought that for I did not get the phone calls or emails. I wanted immediate response.
But being a FA , there any many times you are not having immediate attention or response by
passengers ( or even maybe the seniors or co workers). If you are complaining about how you feel, or their system, I think that other airlines or other jobs might be for you. I am
not trying to be harsh or defending them.(but
maybe telling myself to not be negative) But I went to the interview , and found out that there are so many ones coming to the interviews who are really wanting to be a United FA and really willing to change their lifestyles (work) to achieve their goals.
I understand that we all get so frustrated and irritated. I am still feeling so.I know that the pay isn't enough to what you need.
I think that there are going to be many things that we have to give up to be a FA,
but there are many that we are going to gain.
(that is big for me, and maybe for some of you)
I do not know the reason why you are wanting
to be FA, but if you have the true passion to be one, I think you would be one at United or
any other airlines.
I apologize if I made anyone discouraged
or for me being so harsh sounding.

I am still not a FA, and do not know if I can be one. I wish I knew my schedule beforehand,
and knowing the precise date, time, and other
details. It's so hard for all of us, to be in
this situation.

Good luck

Good Luck

Bill , you have a lot of accurate info on this site...is your interview today? Good luck, my friend : ). If someone needs a set schedule, then maybe a 9-5 job is better for them. (nothing wrong with that, most people have it ). If you are flexible, then maybe this career is for you. If you are on reserve, you get your schedule 1 month ahead of time. So, you can know around the middle of the previous month, what your days off are for the next month. You can be gone up to 6 days at a time, but that depends on what you bid on. Commuters will usually bid the long blocks (of days)on ,with the longer blocks off, so they have more time at home (since they have to commute there). Some like to bid 4 on 3 off so that they can know that the next month they will have all...say Sun/Mon/Tues off....or whatever. I always looked at reserve like this.....I have my 11 days all to myself. The other days, belong to United. That is kind of a mindset you have to get and make the best of it.
to CLARIFY. You ABSOLUTELY do get paid on reserve. It is pretty much how Bill explained it. You get paid for your reserve days on whether or not you fly on them. As far as not getting paid when you have not pushed back from the gate, that is also correct. When you are at the airport, between flights you get paid your per diem, but not your hourly pay. You do not get your hourly pay until the plane pushes off the blocks. We do have holding pay, which is paid at around half your hourly rate, which you get if you are holding with passengers before or after your flight( waiting for a mechanical to be fixed, weather delay, etc). There are limits on holding times etc. If anyone is really interested, I would suggest you go to our unions website and read our contract. www.unitedafa.org. Cat :

hey everyone. i have my spherion interview on tuesday march 11th. I am sooo nervous. it seems like most people on here have a lot of experience in many fields. I am a bartender at applebees and have been there about 2 and 1/2 years. this seems like a great opportunity and I am definitely nervous. I have a few years of college experience and have my real estate license in virginia, but I am only 22 and I have heard they do not like to hire so young and inexperienced. is this true? Im just freaking out lol. I am very nervous and excited. is anyone else going this tuesday coming up? please let me know!! I think it would be great to be able to find someone going through the same thing. thanks
