Feeling a little discouraged, I have come here for some advice. I know this is a difficult time for the airline industry as a whole but I seem to be hitting dead ends everywhere and am feeling like the ultimate reject. Is there anyway to find out why you aren't chosen? I am 5'8", slender, okay looking, friendly, years of experience with basic customer service (but nothing really outstanding). Other people I interviewed with were offered training at airlines - but alas! not me. Can anyone give me real advice on what they look for?

Awwww - I'm sorry you're feeling that way! :( I am sure you will eventually find a good match. Remember it isn't just about getting ANY job, it is about getting the RIGHT job, for YOU! I strongly believe that there are reasons, maybe there is a great airline just waiting for you!

But you are indeed correct about the current climate of the airline industry as a whole, so I definitely wouldn not take it personally - although that is easier said than done, I totally understand. It is an incredibly competitive industry, but you CAN break into it.

How is our resume? Are you playing up all the customer service experience?? Make sure to sell yourself well, and don't be shy about it!

Thank you for your kind comments. My resume could probably use some tweaking, but I do get face to face interviews. I always (except for the first one) feel like they went great, but then I get the thanks but no thanks letter. I definitely am not giving up. I'll keep applying over and over. If you don't hear from an airline at all, well past the time frame they said they would contact you, is it okay to send an email or call? Also, I applied online for one and I know they are hiring, but I haven't heard from them yet about scheduling an interview. Is it okay to call and check on it without them thinking you're overly pushy?

If you are getting the F2F interviews maybe you could practice a little, definitely have some answers ready for different situations. You have a good start if you have already interviewed because you are now familiar with what they ask - and as far as I know they are usually very similar from airline to airline. Where have you interviewed, and/or where do you want to work?

I interviewed with Republic (thanks but no thanks); Northwest (thanks but no thanks). I really wanted Republic. I have applied to others but right now haven't heard back other than the under consideration status. (oh - I interviewed with Mesa Air Group too but never heard back from them and that was like a month ago - how sad is that?) Compass would be great too since I hear such good things about them. Thank you so much for your time.

I wouldn't worry about Mesa, my understanding is that they won't be around much longer anyway.

Are you willing to work anywhere? Do you want to stay in IL and commute, or are you willing to move? The reason I ask is that there are many there options available to you, especially if you are willing to relocate!

Have you tried American Eagle??

I have applied to AE, and others. That is why I am wondering if it is alright to contact them once you've applied and waited for a reasonable period of time.

I am willing to work anywhere. I can get a crashpad or commute. Either is fine with me. I'm working on tweaking my resume this morning so it will pop a little.

Delta - under consideration
Compass- submitted for requisition
Mesa - interviewed - have heard nothing
AirTran - submitted for review
JetBlue - submitted
American Express - submitted
Go-Jet - interviewed - have heard nothing
Republic - interviewed - no thank you
Northwest - interviewed - no thank you

So, you see where I'm at. I think it's time to start over. And don't misunderstand - I'm willing to do that. No problem. And with a smile on my face.

I would also try a few others:

Continental
Alaska Airlines (GREAT airline!)
Delta
Allegiant (they are hiring)
ASA Airlines (they are hiring)
PSA Airlines (they are hiring)
Pinnacle
Mesaba
Omni International (they are hiring)
Virgin America

some of these may not be hiring at the moment, but I would definitely fill out applications and submit your resume once you tweak it! Just make sure it really highlights your customer service experience - that is what they want! =)

I am feeling better about all of this. Thank you. I have been working on my resume all day (off and on) and it's shaping up better. However, when you list your duties at a previous (or present) job, is there a better way than to say: (for example) "interviewed personnel for open positions; transcription; assisted customers with their immediate and long term needs; heavy filing, typing and transcription; liaison between office staff and corporate personnel;....." etc.

I've had customers crying and at their wit's ends that I've had to calm down and help look at the options in front of us in a matter of fact, soothing way, when they are going through a very difficult time, but do not know how to convey that on my resume and cover the customer service aspects.

I'm going to basically apply and keep applying - anywhere and everywhere.

Thank you so much for lifting my spirits.

As far as the resume, you really need to play up the customer service much more, customer service is KING!

 Customer service experience with diverse public

Go to different airlines and read their qualifications needed. Take it from their...I also went to my local community college and had a career counselor work on my resume with me....Good luck.

Definitely try Mesaba!! They have like 8 or 9 info. sessions in the next few weeks. Their info. sessions are really informative, and they're looking for a lot of people right now. Everyone there is really really nice, too. Fun group of people. Just make sure you fill out the paper application and bring it with you. Put your resume and a very well-worded cover letter in a vinyl folder with a label with your name and address on it. Make sure you visit with people at the info. session and chat with the recruiters during the small break during the session. They love that. Also really stress your passion for having happy customers. Those two words (Happy Customers) really hits home.

Girl, you are looking not there! It seems to me it's kind of safety issue, you know background check and all that stuff. You could have something in the family, past or in your life that doesn't let you go anywhere. They don't really need to start real background check for that, also, check yourself for extra visible tatoos or extra make up, maybe you simply look too urban. I wouldn't try Mesa, there is no one who could say a good word about them.
