Well Julie, I have to wonder what kind of person finds my disabling illness something to laugh about. I hope you understand that my comments are meant to spare others the same fate by educating them about the potential hazards to your health by taking a flying job - pilot OR flight attendant. It saddens me that despite all the information now available online that so many are still willing to sacrifice their health for a poor paying drudge job. |
|
FA in Marietta, Georgia 25 months ago |
Again Julie, my 2 yrs with United, 17 with PanAm and 8+ with the regionals just goes to show that I surely don't know as much as you do. Still, it makes me cringe just reading the comments in here. Honestly, stuff like having your lessons 'down packed' instead of 'down pat.' sheesh, you pack a suitcase - not a lesson. That's just one example of the moron writings expressed in here.

I am going to an open session and I wanted to make sure that taking a job with them would be a good decision. Noone has to bash them. I just want to make sure I am making the right decision. I just got hired also to go to training in Phoenix on Oct 31. well it was earlier but they moved me to later in the month. I have worked for a major airline before but not as a FA. I have always wanted to try FA and MESA has given me the job. I ahve talked to alot of FA's for Mesa and no one has beat them up like the IV girl. Sorry for your troubles but don't you think your situation is slim? I am going and its not like the Army, you can always quit if it doesn't work out with your lifestyle. I say go for it, you won't know if you don't try. |

All the negatives and postive of the job are true just keep in mind you aren't becoming a flight attendant for the money. You wno't make it :) You are doing this because you want the benefits, they are pretty decent for the flight ones. Yes you'll be on reserve, but in a regional you move up a little faster then mainline ones. My instructor was on reserve for 10 months in PHX, others have only been on reserve for like 3-4 months in IAD and ORD. If your in the del rio right now, come say hi :) I'm sure you'll find me. How is the testing? Is there alot of drop outs? What advise on the 7 announcments you have to memeorize? I really need help with those 7 announcments.........and how is the living situation at Del rio? Thanks |

Long, hard days, poverty wages and damaging consequences to your health. Sure, most jobs have their negative side BUT how many jobs are there that put your health in jeopardy for such piddly wages? Oh, won't happen to me... that's what I thought too eight years ago when I became an FA... want to see me now? I've been hooked up to IV meds for several months. I can't work my FA job or ANY other job for at least another six months and I'm living on disability insurance which barely covers my mortgage. Everything I ever worked for, my car, my home, my savings will all be gone soon because I thought... Oh, won't happen to me. I'm part of a large group of FA's and pilots in the same boat and I'd like to spare other people from making a disastrous mistake. DO YOU MIND ME ASKING WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU. I JUST HAPPENED TO RUN ACROSS THIS FORUM,AND FOUND IT. BEING A FA WAS ONE OF MY DREAMS TOO. BUT I HAVE 5 CHILDREN,AND EVERYWHERE I APPLIED TO CLAIM I NEED EXP. BUT THERE WAS A SCHOOL OUT IN WASHINGTON STATE THAT I COULD GO TO ,AND THEY GUARANTEED ME A JOB. PLEASE TELL ME IF THAT'S HOW THEY REALLY WORK? |

FA in Marietta, Georgia 25 months ago |
Don't mind you asking. In a nutshell, I (among other fa's and pilots) caught a particularly nasty viral infection. Occupational health dangers from this job abound. Everything from the stress on your body from working unusual and fluctuating work hours, cabin air problems, and respiratory ailments and infections from the cheap nasty hotel rooms that flight crews are provided. I encourage you to check out www.welcomeaboardtoxicairlines.com. This job (it is no longer a career) can be a huge adjustment if you have children. It is imperative to have a strong support system at home. The fa's I have flown with depend strongly on a live-in grandparent or their children live with relatives. In other cases the mother plays a complicated juggling act and they often look and feel just plain haggard. Flight attendant schools are a rip-off. You don't need them and, in fact, most airlines prefer to train you 'their way' and pay You during training. You don't need a school to find you a flight attendant job - the turnover rate is huge and airlines are always looking. I don't recommend an fa job but if you are determined to give it a shot - here's a job for you. www.flyasa.com is ASA (Atlantic Southeast Airlines - Delta Connection). They currenty have one home base - Atlanta GA, but their flight attendants and pilots 'commute' from their homes all over the states and some even outside the states. This airline needs new fa's NOW and will give you all the training you need. The starting pay is much higher than regionals like Mesa and they fly all over the US, the Islands and other International routes unlike airlines like Mesa. Good luck. I think if somebody wants to try this enough that it's so very easy to become an FA that you should go ahead. There is no commitment. If you don't like it - you can quit anytime. Just please guard your health. |

2) Do they pay for the training 3) Do they pay for you hotel and flight and food? |
|
Lisa 25 months ago |
I was emailed a letter 5 business days after the interview. No pay for training. $100.00 up to $300.00 for food if you pass the test at 85%. They do pay for the flight and hotel. Lisa
Good Luck! |

They do not prepare you to be a flight attendant, they prepare you to be a ticket counter person, more or less. I went to interviews with those girls who paid thousands of dollars for the school, only to see them not even get individual interviews. The International Air Academy (www.aha.edu) is a joke, as well as a scam. Go to www.flightattendantcareer.com and see what Kiki has to say about those schools.

I have worked as a customer service rep/supervisor for a major airline for 20 years. I left in 2005 to get married and make changes in my life. I have always wanted to be a FA but family, and other things always stopped me. You see I have several friends who are FA's (STILL) and they did miss out on alot of functions and parties and childerns games. IT IS A LIFE CHANGING MOVE. I know have the opportunity to do this and I am excited and can't wait. For those of you with small children you may want to wait. Your family/relationships are on hold for a year or so, or until you can bid a line. some airlines takes years. But if you are like me and this is a dream go for it............its not like joining the army and you can't quit if its not for you. I have no children, a solid relationship with my husband and no bills really. So It just works for me. I can live anywhere and my husband can come anywhere to see me. Good Luck to anyone who wants this but always keep it in your head......It is not for everyone.

I was a Flight Attendant and a Flight Operations Supervisor for Chautauqua. I got the airline bug back in 2000 and I loved it I had to make a very difficult decision my mother was very ill and I wanted to be with her before she passed away. The traning is not exactly easy because each airline has different announcements and differnt ways of conducting their training class. But overall the only thing that is easy is the airline codes and the airline lingo the announcements are long. With Chautauqua/Republic we had a CD that had all of the announcements on them...and that was a life saver it also sounded more professional but, Mesa has it's own way of doing things and I guess we just havc to accept it. I'm going into this like a fish out of water I don't want to bring any old ideas of what was taught to me in the pass I'm going to training to learn Everything I can the MESA WAY lol. I'm praying for any base on the East Coast first choice would be CLT but I'm open for whatever |

I was just telling you that I have friends who have small children and they are always upset and sad they missed a game, party etc. I was there for 20 years too. it is a lifestyle change but in no means am I saying it won't work for you if you really want it. We all do things for our families and ourselves to make life interesting and rewarding ........I would never tell anyone NOT to try if thats what they want. Sorry I gave the wrong impression. I worked for Mesa's flight school fourteen years ago. It was a lousy company back then and it still is lousy. I was lied to about my advancement opportunities back then and I left shortly thereafter. If the past is prologue, then you should stay away, too. Other, better airlines, such as SkyWest, are hiring FAs. Apply to them instead. |

Wow sounds like they gave you a hard time...do you think it was because it was basicaly a new company starting out and they still had some kinks to work out???? I recently was offered training as a Flight Attendant and I accepted. I know that Mesa is still a young company in Airline terms they have only been around for 25 years. I pray that it's a better company now than it was then. Honestly I don't think that there is a perfect airline. ASA, Delta, Comair, Jet Blue, Chautauqua, Trans State, US Airways,American and Even SkyWest all have some type of problems were the employee is not totaly satisfied.

No, Mesa had been around eleven years when I was hired. It was still based in FMN and the Risleys were still running it. Mesa lied to me about my opportunities for upgrade from flight school instructor to airline FO. They didn't have any kinks to work out save for how they treated their employees. Here's another example of crappy employee treatment. For years Mesa blocked ALPA from organizingpilots. One story is a group of pilots approached Grady Reed about organizing. Reed greeted them with a handful of completed apps. He held up the apps and told the pilots there were plenty of replacements available if they didn't like how Mesa treated them. Good luck with Mesa. I know that no airline is really any good anymore, but if I were to choose I would avoid the commuters altogether and go with a place like F9. |

Just wanted to say hello to everyone that's slated for the 10/31 training-because we'll be classmates!!! Like many others, I've read the comments here, both positive and negative, and I'm going in with an open mind and lots of flexibility. As someone mentioned earlier, it's not something that we're locked into, so we can certainly walk away from it if we determine that it's NOT for us. Having said that, I look forward to meeting you all, and I hope that we'll be able to help each other along (esp. with the studying!!!) so that we can all complete training and proudly wear those wings!!!! Questions? Comments? Feel free to hit me up @ brownsugerqt@yahoo.com! Best of luck to all!!!! |

Are you hoping to get based in Charlotte? Is it true that they do base assignments using the 1st digit of the last 4 or your SSN? Best of luck! |
