One good way is to get an account with Transcore one of their services is historical data on freight that has moved. |

Do not use a program to come up with your rates. |

Most effective, never failing technique on developing an accurate Quote? Give me a break. There is no such thing as a "never failing technique." You can come up with the best rate in the world and do a ton of business with it. However, the day J.B. Hunt or Schneider or one of the other big boys comes in and decides they need that freight, guess what, your most effective, never failing technique just failed. Maybe if people would do a little research and find out what they are getting into before opening yet another brokerage, rates wouldn't be as depressed as they are and everyone could make money. These brokers that try to make 30 or 40% off the truck make me sick. They have no clue how to start and maintain a long-standing business. Instead, they steal as much from the truck as they can today just in case they have to shut the doors tomorrow. The truck pays for the equipment, the driver, the insurance, the fuel, etc. The broker pays for some office equipment, utilities and rent. Why is he entitled to 30 or 40% of what the load pays? Don't give me that "well the rate is what the rate is" crap either. Stealing is stealing no matter how you try to justify it. As for the most effective, never failing technique on developing an accurate Quote...go ahead and learn how to do that. I'll go into the same customer, with a higher rate, and get the business. Why? It's not just about the quote, you have to sell yourself before you even get to the part where customers start asking for rates. Good luck to anyone trying to get started in this business. Don't take a $1000 to $3000 training course. You could stand in front of your home and burn that cash with the same result. If these people had such great techniques, they would not be training their competition. No, they would be in the office moving freight and making 6 figures. Find a company hiring inexperienced candidates instead. Nothing beats hands-on training in this business. |

I don't know where that went but it made it really clear and easy as to what things would cost to move... I miss the good old days... lol... YES... quoting is an art form, but if they don't even have an idea of where to start, they will NEVER learn how to do it the right way. Said simple formula was for them to get a base to start from. I can show them how to stay in the ballpark with almost every quote they send off. Just said basic formula to get base... Nothing is EVER set in stone... We always have to roll with the punches. I just like to give the new people a good place to start. Charles

just a short note to the people looking at getting into brokering loads . first and allways first the truck driver is your best friend !!! they will make you or break you so treat them rite . every one deserves to make a living but these drivers are getting hit hard with fuel and taxes their is no need to be taking 15% to 40 % off a load . and on top of that their the last ones to get payed .......as a broker my self i spent a year and a half working for a family member who has been a broker for 33 years for free !!! just to learn how to do this , their are no short cuts !! and dont fall for the internet scams they are just that scams ........luke |

to joe in ky ....joe their is no basic formula , this market is every changing its very much about taking each load 1 by 1 and knowing what you can get a company to move it for and still save a little for you . some of the larger carriers who have 100% credit in the industrie have higher overhead thus charge more . joe beware of anyone trying to sell you a sure way to make it in this industrie , their are companies that have been around for a long time going under .......hope this helps you ...luke |

I'm new to the broker agent thing. Not new to trucking. I've been a driver and safety supervisor and instructor for many years. I just need to know the best way to get out there and get customers(shippers). I am ready, honest, and hardworking. I only want to do the best for both my customers and carriers. How do I do this? How do you get your foot in the door? How do I approach the shipper? How do I get the customer to realize that I will give them the absolutely best in service. This is something I've wanted to do all my working life and finally got the chance with a great broker. She is just so busy, I hate to ask for much help in this. I live in North Florida so if there is someone who wants to help me to start out on right foot, I'd be forever greatful. I am not money hungry and I'm not a theif. I believe in honesty and integrity and just want to do this for the love of the business and not so much the money. Am I wrong in that thinking? Is this a business for those who are vipers or wolves? I'm not that way nor do I want to be. I want to be successful without doing anyone else wrong. |
