there are actually a # of freight broker schools across the country. Generally, once they have enough interest in one area they will set up a 1 week class in your area.

Another good way to learn freight brokerage is from another broker who is willing to take the time and teach you the tips and tricks. Believe it or not, there are still people around that enjoy teaching without the cost of training. That is how I am learning. |

BigMACK, Definately the best way to learn the biz is from another broker. I get calls everday from people who just completed some online course and want to be a broker, but I don't know of one company that will hire them as a broker. Usually they will hire them as a salesperson or dispatcher which they could have qualified for without the online course. |

Do you suggest taking the course to become at least an agent? Or will I/we newbies still be in the same boat, going for the sales or dispatcher position and save our $ from joining a school?? And another question...... Just a shot here,,, any chance in hell you'd be willing to teach me a thing or two being that I am fairly close to your neck of the woods. I would be more than willing to help you do "what ever" work you'd need done, free. I can't think of any reason I could disagree with you about, "Definitely the best way to learn the biz is from another broker". Right now it would be a chance of a life time for me. I would be extremely grateful. I don't know anyone in the biz that lives within driving distance, or would be willing to help otherwise.

1. What is a Property Broker?
2. What are the requirements of an FMCSA Property Broker?
3. What is a surety bond?
An individual's credit, and/or financial strength, is investigated with extreme thoroughness. Only then is a "bond" issued. Accordingly, if for some reason the broker fails to pay the transportation company, the bonding company must pay. As you can imagine, the bonding company is very careful about who they insure. 4. Is this a growing sector of the transportation industry?
f. Does a brokerage company carry cargo and liability insurance to protect its clients' interests?
6. What do I need to get started? Training.

Hello People. I am in the same position Laclea is. But, I am in Miami,FL. Currently, I am confuse between "Freight Broker" and "Property Boker", what's the different? |
|
jeff in Keller, Texas 16 months ago |
A property broker is the legal name used by the FMCSA. A freight broker and a property broker are the same. Jeff Roach

|
don jipping in Columbus, Ohio 16 months ago |
In regards to the requirements,(bond), it should be noted that a BMC-85 Broker Trust Fund may be used in place of the broker bond. In fact, 75% of freight brokers today used the Broker Trust Fund as opposed to the broker bond. Broker bonds are not easy to obtain as more and more insurance and bonding companies are refusing this business. Don Jipping

Obviously you have never been to a freight broker training school or you didn't do your research and picked a bad one. I went to one with out any prior experiance and became a freight broker. I have 20 agents and I'm extremely busy. I could not have done it if it were not for the school. There was alot of hands on training, posting to load boards, cold calling as well as theory and requirements. In fact, two other students from my class of 8 are currently freight brokers. Three out of eight, not bad. Others may have become agents. |

Going to a school is one way to learn, if you have the capital. However, most people looking to become agents are not able to spend the kind of money needed to go to broker school. There are several more ways to be an agent. You can find a brokerage hiring new comers to train.... you can find carriers hiring brokers for a split. I learned how to be an agent through another brokerage and it didn't cost me a dime. I'm not knocking Training Schools...but I think most people are better off getting hands on with another broker instead of paying a few thousand dollars to get the same information you can get for free. There are plenty of agencies willing to train good people... Go to clickloads.com and take a look around at the advertising and you will see what I mean. My suggestion to Newcomers is...

If you don't know what my advice is... obviously you didn't read the last paragraph.... And if you go to the top of this thread you will see that my reply stayed on the original topic. If I was directing my comment to you, I would have mentioned your name in my reply, so I don't even know why you felt you needed to be rude about it. I was giving my 2 cents, just like you are, to everyone....not to anyone particular. And by the way....It's obvious that Clickloads is an advertising site. With that being said, there are Brokers looking for Agents on that site, so it DOES pertain to my original reply. Not many newcomers know about these sites...and I am sure it will help someone, somewhere find what they are looking for. |

I would like to thank everyone that has given advice on this topic. It has helped alot. (except for the rude comment that wasted space and was in my opinion unnecessary!) Most people are looking for information that will help because they've searched until they have information overload. They are not looking for rude comments. What helps me may not help someone else and vice versa. My point is as long as it has to do with this field and subject it may help someone. One thing I know for sure rude comments do not help anyone. My question is below to anyone that would like to reply. I live in Pulaski, TN and have searched many hours on the net looking for training without having to spend money that I don't have. I'm unemployed and my husband is our only source of income. At this time we are not even living paycheck to paycheck. Does anyone have any suggestions or know anyone that would be willing to train me and help get me started? |

I'm looking for help learning the broker business. Do you need an agent in the Houston area? I'm more than willing to learn if you are willing to teach. I am a go-getter looking to get into the broker business. To get the experience that I require, I'm more than happy to work as an agent. I know broker school is an alternative, however I do not have the type of money required to get formal school training at this time. If you need guarantees on your knowledge, I'd be more than happy to agree to commit to working for you an agreed upon amount of time. If you would feel more comfortable on a trail basis, I'll do that too. All I need is a chance and a good teacher and you'll definitely see a return in your investment of time in me. I currently work nights at an oil and gas firm here in Houston as what can best be described as dispatch/inventory control so I'm available to work just about any business hours that you need me to be available during the day. I'm motivated, intelligent, hard working, and hungry for success. I just want to find the right opportunity, so I'm here trying to create my own. I can provide you with resumes, references, or any other information that you need to prove that you would be making a worthwhile investment in training me. If you'd like to meet and want to have lunch in the Houston area, I'd be more than happy to sit down with you and treat you to a good meal here. If you'd like to contact me, feel free to email me at [email removed]. If you'd feel more comfortable actually talking with me, please contact me at [Edited by Host] Contact info deleted Please do not post Contact info in the forums.

Skinny Kids "Timid sales people have skinny kids". Bryan Flannigan Do you have a little shy in you? Well if you want to sell, get over it. Be bold in your approach without being pushy. Be confidant in your self and in your ability to help. Look at every sales call as an opportunity to educate, make a new acquaintance and/or brighten a day. The idea is to keep your name top of mind so when they need a broker they think of you⦠and want to do business because you are pleasant. And donâÂÂt forget, those babies gotta eat. Many people invest in a website and months or years later they complain, âmy website is worthless, I never get any business from it.â Creating a website without search engine optimizing it is like creating a newspaper advertisement and never running the advertisement in the newspaper. What is search engine optimization (SEO)? Search engine optimization is a process used by Internet marketers to properly code your website so the major search engines can determine whether your site is relevant to related searches. Most website designers do not know how to optimize a website for Internet search. Chances are if you have a website and you are not working with a search engine optimization consultant, then your web site is not getting much traffic. Most importantly it is not providing you with sales leads or new clients. Why search optimize your website? Search engine optimization is an Internet based lead generation tool. If your website is not optimized correctly then you are wasting a valuable lead generation tool. Why run the advertisement you created for the newspaper in the newspaper? The primary reason is to create leads and sales. This is the same reason you should consider investing in search engine optimization. |

Free handy info for the new broker or agent. Truck supply and capacity are macro economic terms to describe the current economic condition of available trucks to loads (supply vs. demand). For example, if I had 500 loads moving out of Houston and researched the market and I see only 200 trucks available - then I have more freight than capacity. Capacity is the availability of equipment for any given period. If I owned a trucking company and I had an empty trailer or tractor sitting on the yard ("on the fence" as they call it), then I have available capacity. Of course, trucks only produce revenue when running with freight ("loaded miles"). Every state has a different amount of daily capacity based simply on this question: Is the population consuming or producing more products? It is imperative to understand truckload capacity because capacity impacts shipment prices. So, if your client doesn't understand why the price is high, and you can educate them on the daily/weekly/monthly capacity (current market conditions), then they will begin to understand. And you will be showing them that you really know your stuff. Never assume rates are the issue. A shipper will more often than not, gladly pay a few extra cents per mile if they know you, as their broker, are looking out for their best. It is also important that you pay your carrier a bit more than all the other brokers. Also understand why we have the fuel surcharge (.29 a mile is the average right now). The shipper should be paying it to the broker and the broker should be giving it to the carrier. Strive to under promise and over deliver. Never speak negative about anyone. Keep your positive spirit in all matters. Make the carriers and shippers goals your goals. Moving Forward |

Do you ever listen to aimless drivel of talking heads opine about the ills of society, and feel frustrated? Has passive learning and wasted input created a chaotic feeling of helplessness as you wonder if you are making a difference? An obstacle to progress is over-thinking our problems and our obstacles. The first step towards making a difference is learning how to be different. The bottom line is to change your input, towards the positive. You can do this in the following ways this week: 1. Your image of yourself will change for the better when you read information that is good, clean, pure, powerful and positive. 2. Make an effort to participate in one random act of kindness everyday this week. By playing the game of gratitude with no ulterior motive you will be enriched greatly. 3. Tell your loved ones you love them. Do not assume it is common knowledge just because you are around them. Verbalize your commitment to them. 4. Listen to automobile university. If you want to be better at something find all the experts you can on that subject and then internalize their expertise. Youâll change radically for the better. 5. Take time to be quiet. Spend reflective moments when you are driving around with no noise coming from the radio, cd or i-pod. Compare your victories with your defeats. Try to make the list of victories longer than the list of defeats and watch the changes. Do these things this week and you will have moved from the comfort zone of mediocrity to the effective zone of enhanced productivity. |
