Answer to your question.

Your best bet is go to Gatlin Education and look at Gatlin's loan program.

You can also check out all the schools they have the course in by going to the zip code locator and finding the college. Most of these universities have rather large FA departments.

I still believe Gatlin's loan program is the best. It is a loan not a grant or govt. funding; however, it is fair. You can get into the on-line course and pay it out.

Is is important to note that you will need at least three months of savings prior to starting your agency so it may be wise and wait until you are in that position.

If you do not have the money to pay for training then you really should wait to start an agency or brokerage.
It takes 3-6 Months before you make any real money and that is if your a worker. (everyday all day).

My two cents,

jeff,

Thank you Jeff I need all the tidbits I can find. As a matter of fact I did contact somone from Gaitlin and she is suppose to get back with me. I also wanted to ask do you feel the online broker courses work better than hands on training? I was trying to make a decision between the two. I found some online courses is cheaper, but they're not hands on.

Thanks again for your help.

I have been working on it a few days and may be getting some place if I do I will pass the information on.It seems that the real money in freight brokering/agent is selling the how to books/programs.

There are a few very good courses available online but what if someone pays to train you and then you quit?

I am very interested in becoming a freight broker agent. I thought I had found a company that was willing to train me, but that has turned out not to be true. Maybe there is someone out there who is willing to train me.I have a strong drive inside and I know this is something I want to invest my time in. I do know by working for a freight broker company in the accounting department, that an agent is where the money is.Iam in the ARkansas area, if there is someone who will teach me and let me work from my home, Iwould like very much for you to contact me. sincerely, Lee Ann

I have been in transportation for 15 years, as a O/O, Co driver, HR, dispatcher, safety, and an Instructor. Now I would like to move to the next level a Broker Agent...But who will hire me with no active clients? I have a list of folks to call when I get a parent broker, I'm ready to go, just no one to go with. Also do you go for say 7% or do you go for 60/40 split which is the better way to to go?? I got broker bootcamp didn't tell me a lot I didn't already know from owning my own truck ... but I purcahsed the DOT Authority frieght broker business course and it was pretty good... any comments and suggestions would be great
thanks Jaymie

The only broker that I know that offers a flat % off the gross is Landstar and they require you to have accounts and or knowledge of how to get some shippers.

Most brokers are willing to pay 50-50. Your best bet is to find a school that guarantees placement with quality brokers like Landstar and Exel.

Dot Auth. has a great overview one day class. I have had several graduates attend their one day seminar prior to coming to my school.

You can find several schools that will train you in a week and offer placement after graduation. You can also go to most any college and enroll in a 150 hour on-line course that Gatlin education offers.

Find a broker that will mentor and continue training you after
you sign on with them. Often the smaller brokers are easier because they are more personal; however, the larger brokers
offer more technology and of course capacity.

The only negative about going to be an agent for a large broker is the area you are working may have several agents in your area where a smaller broker would not.

Find a good mentor and continue your education.
This is not a get rich quick business. It requires
tenacious serious business minded people that are focused
on their customers and most important the carriers.

It is the carrier who does most of the work and gets the least amount of respect. That is the first lesson I teach.

The money will come if you get with the right company and work hard.

Moving forward,

Jeff

this may sound silly but the 50/50 split that is after the truck has been paid correct? and the % is off the top
am I correct in that.
thanks Jaymie

the 50/50 would be off the gross margin.

The difference in what you pay the carrier and bill the shipper.

The flat % would be off the the gross your billing the shipper.

You got it

The problem with free money is that it did not take any risk or disciplin to obtain. I think you would be more aggressive in being sucessful if you put a little into it.

Jeff,

I really value your advice and comments! I am considering the Gatlin online course, however the prospects after graduating from the course seem dim, as all the companies I've seen are interested only in brokers who already have suppliers and carriers in place. I'd love to pursue this career, but am nervous about who will hire me as an agent or broker after I graduate. Thanks for your help! Mandy

Attention: If you have a will to be a freight broker, then we are looking for you. No experiance required. No books of freight required. We offer 60/40 split, referral bonus second to none. Excellent carrier base. You must be willing to work hard, and treat carriers fairly. There are a lot of brokers out here that line their pockets and the carriers starve. We also have carrier authority, and will not tolerate "topping the freight". If you are an honest person, and want to enter this business than contact us at 6058780909.

I am looking to start a company in Redding, California as either a freight agent or freight broker. I have been involved in trucking for 10 years as a dispatcher, both in LTL, TL and Bulk transportation. I was hoping if someone can steer me in the right direction. First off, even with my experience do you recommend taking a training course? Secondly, do these training courses put you in contact with potential customers. I have many more questions to ask, if someone is interested in furthuring my education on this subject, I would welcome any comments or directions you might have. Thank you.
