You are not wasting your time if you are willing to put in the time and resources to start and build a new company. It is not a get rich quick venture, but if you are willing to stick with it, you can build up a very profitable database of clients with residual business, and over time you set your own income potential. You need to be prepared for the beginning stages of your business - it takes the average person probably 3 to 6 months of working hard before they start seeing some good income coming in. That's the hard part. The good part is that it is residual and builds on itself, so it snowballs over time. You can do a search for "freight broker school" and find a reputable training school.

There are lots of people who will sell you training and "leads". The leads are just lists of companies they got off the internet orthey called and found they were working with a bigger brokerage and they are trying to make money off of all of their searching. You know the saying "Them that can't do, TEACH"

I have owned a brokerge for years, and it is hard work. You have to know where to find trucks and what the rates are. A good place to start is to look for smaller shippers in your area. Subscribe to a load board like www.truckstop.com or www.truckstop.com and study the information they offer. You will get ideas about rates, traffic flow, etc. A wealth of information.

Most brokerages want you to bring your own customers to the table, many want 1 MIL in annual sales to get you on board. They generally pay you from 60-70% They provide the bond, software access, load boards, and hopefully name recognition.

It is like most businesses...what do your have to offer the customer that they current provider doesn't offer? Why should they work with you?

You seem to want to put everyone in the same group. You say those who can’t do, teach… I am an active broker agent and have been in the business before there was such a thing as a “Broker Agent”.

Most of the leads offered on my Leads Disk www.freightbrokersbuddy.com are companies that I have personally worked with in the past. I am currently semi-retired and only take care of 3 main customers right now.

Some of the companies only want to deal with smaller trucking companies, but most would rather deal with brokers.

I would offer a money back guarantee that you WILL find new customers or your money back, but everything really depends on “What they say, and How they say it”.

I can’t give someone their money back because they sounded like a bozo on the phone and scared the potential customer off.

My Training Manual contains everything a person needs to break into the broker agent business. I even give them a list of companies that will take on new agents.

So, your stereotype of what is offered out there is probably correct when it comes to most of the stuff, but there is information available that is REALLY HELPFUL to those that are looking to become an Agent.

myself along with my brother both own trucks (5) all together and have them leased to a trucking company out of Joplin. We are looking to start a brokerage as soon as possible we have very good potential customere base. i have been on the phone today talking with funding companies to find some possible backup with the all mighty dollar if you know what i mean. I am trying to find who i need to talk with to get my bond and i did get the number to (FMCA) today so im going to call the and find out what i need to do to get my authority. Reading all the comments has been great information and i will continue to read this. I would like any helpful ideas that anybody has to give i am new at the brokering but have been in trucking and warehousing for the last 15 years.

I didnt think that i could get on with a company without having existing customers until reading these comments today. I havent researched it much and didnt know if the income return was there after everybody was paid.

Standard Commission
The Agent shall earn 60% of each commission realized and collected by Broker on all A/R (load payment) received 34 days after invoice date. Commission less than $50, Agent gets $10, Broker the balance. Agent's commission will be paid biweekly.

Commission Incentive
Any Month where Agent books and Broker invoices more than $70,000 due to Agent's business, Agent shall receive 65% commission for that Month's bookings (i.e., a 5% incentive), the Broker the balance. Any Month where the Agent books and the Broker invoices $90,000 due to the Agent's business, Agent will receive 70%,(i.e., a 10% incentive), the Broker the balance. All incentive balances will be deposited in Broker's Hold Back interest bearing account by Broker on Agent's behalf. Agent may access this account the following year to the Amount held less 10% of that account to continue the open account, but will still be the property of the Agent, until termination of this Agreement.

Incentive Cap
Commissions over $700, Agent earns 80% of commission, the Broker the balance.
Commissions over $900, Agent will receive 90%, Broker the balance.

I am also thinking of entering the freight brokerage business, but I realize that I need experience and therefore have dedcided to look into taking the Gaitlin course. I have also decided that maybe the best approach is to start by becoming a freight agent.
Through out the research faze I have come accross people who say that the course is not worth it and some who say the opposite. I am confused as to which is the best approach and I am willing to learn before taking the plunge as I do have a reasonably decent job at the moment. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Nevertheless, I saw that you have a wealth of info as far as brokering goes. If you have time I would love to ask you some questions about the industry in general, including whether you think this may be the right direction for me. If you want to become a freight broker and make more money you will need broker authority and a surety bond or trust. Try Pacific Financial for a surety bond and GLAuthority.com for broker authority. Hope this helps.

I am looking to become a broker in los angeles if any of you have information. I have a four year degree with a minor in economics.

I have been in the Transportation business for 6 years. First was IT and Safety for small carrier then dispatching. I have been working with a small broker company for about 8 months. Just two other individuals in the company. I am not a great sales man. I have a few customers, but have been getting loads from most of the customers already established with this company. I am being paid 33% for this and getting hit with factoring fees to cover paying these loads. I am told if I get my own customers I will receive 50/50. I feel like I am being taken advantage of doing all the work on these loads. What are the right words to say to get new customers. I call and check, but usually their response is. We have a dedicated carrier. If someone can help me I would greatly appreciate it. Not many good paying jobs here and with having kids it is great to work from home, but hard time keeping bills paid. the reasons you are having problems paying your bills is that the value of your dollar has been cut in half in the last six years. gold has maintained its value against a barrel of oil over the same period of time. the cost of oil is affecting trade and the freight business (the cost of diesel fuel). there is much less business now than there was a few years ago. good luck.

I have books and books and books of leads that I am always giving my agents as leads. Watch your money.

care to divulge which publications? how do you become a broker without prior knowledge? thanks.

The knowledge part is easy. You just need to get your credentials in order (mc number, boc3, bond) and start calling shippers/manufacturers to move their freight. Once you get a customer you can post the loads on a load board like Getloaded.com and truckers will call you about moving it. You'll need a contract with the trucker but you can find a sample one with a google search.

Have you contacted CR England? National firm and they hire brokers.
